There’s the issue.    If the analytics say the bat speed is gone and there’s not a damned thing you can do about it, you have to cut bait.

But why?  They are not trying to win right now.  They accepted losing in Houston for the greater good.  They have no incentive to cut him.  Even if he strikes out 600 times

Cool, glad you're so certain about everything.

Wonder how they're gonna analytic that molasses slow bat.

I hate to burst your bubble, Moose, but this all makes perfect sense right now. He is under this contract, and this is the Baltimore Orioles.  Peter Angelos Signed him, and is still alive.  I’m pretty certain.

I don't see that happening.  Under the old regime, maybe.  But Elias seems to have a plan, and if Davis is playing like he did last year I don't see Elias messing around.

Elias and the new regime will give Chris Davis EVERY CHANCE THEY CAN to get right, as a member of the Baltimore Orioles and under this contract.  Period.

They believe they can improve player performance through coaching and data, and they inherited him with the rest of the team. They have seen him when he was doing well, and seen him recently.

They will NOT allow Chris Davis to move on from this contract and team, and then go to some other team to find himself again.

We have Chris until he gets better.  If it does not happen, we have him for a longer time until he does.  They will keep working with him, but they will not swallow the contract and watch him hit somewhere else.

Huh? Drafting seniors in the top 10 rounds has been a common practice since draft bonus pools were instituted. Every team does it.

I’m not taking away from Wilkerson’s accomplishment, I’m actually trying to highlight how much he has outperformed expectations, senior signs rarely make the bigs.

The O’s have done well with these picks, Wynns is another senior sign who has vastly outperformed expectations.

In your first post you said “the ONLY REASON he was drafted was to SAVE MONEY”.  So I understood you at your word, there.

I don’t know enough about Dans draft strategem to compare one way or the other, but I am more confused about it now than when we started.

“In the sixth round, the Orioles select (insert chump who we can sign cheap), who is an old dude from WhatsamattaU”...seems like a reason we are in the mess we are in.

He was a senior and the only reason he was selected in the top 10 rounds was to save money against the slot to spend on other players. He went undrafted as a draft eligible Jr.

He was selected in the 8th round and signed for just 10,000. For comparison the O’s signed 12 guys  in the 11th through 35th rounds in 2018 for 125,000 each.

So it sounds like DD knew Mrs. Wilkerson?

somehow the dude made it onto our 40, and he is wearing the jersey...

  6. It looks like this coach has been a Dodgers consultant for years.  Lots of successes over the years.  Who knows.

The two reconnected again when (Gabe) Kapler was named the Dodgers’ farm director in 2015; that led directly to the Dodgers retaining Wallenbrock and Van Scoyoc as consultants. The shift had been set in motion. The seeds of the coaching tree were planted.

Every time I see a Muncy breakout from nowhere, I can’t help thinking what masking agent are they using to avoid a positive drug test.

It's possible.  But Muncy's approach, stance and swing changes were well covered last year.

Muncy is one, and Chris Taylor was another one that went to this coach before last year.  The Dodgers connection seems conspicuous btw.

Anyway, this year, I also see that Jackie Bradley Jr. went to work with him, too. Sadly he was the easiest out on the Sawx last year :(

  8. First off, LOL

Second off, he went this offseason to work with the famous coach that helped JD Martinez figure everything out.  The coach’s name is Craig Wallenbrock.  Wilkerson already sounds different about hitting. This is a quote from Melewski’s blog this morning.

“Was just working on cleaning up my (bat) path and getting myself in the correct position to hit the ball more consistently,” he said. ” Wanted to make my swing path more efficient. Getting my lower half in the right position to see the ball and drive it.”

I guess lots of players go to that coach at s9me point, and maybe I am glad that he has decided to spend his offseason that way, just like JD Martinez famously did for the Astros when he became superhuman.

I have not heard of any othe Orioles going to this coach, in fact I would love to know more about it.  Anyone else heard of any other Os going to him?

Go Os, and Go Steve, I guess.

I'd rather lose 100 and get the top draft pick again.

I am so tired of bad baseball and I think we are in such a tough division that we are assured of a pretty high pick regardless, plus with the new FO, I think we can trust the process.

I want our guys to hustle and play well and win some games and bring some fans back, and I don’t want to tank completely just for another 1:1

What's he doing smiling and having fun?!?!?! He should be huddled in his locker, crying and wondering about how he can get his career back on track and being 100% honest that he worked on his swing all day, every day this offseason until his hands bled.

I will not tolerate Chris Davis showing any kind of fun/positive/feel good emotion until he's got an OPS of at least .850.  Until then, he needs to have slumped shoulders at all time and pondering his miserable existence.

    Ain't that right @atomic?

To be fair, I think Chris was trying to genuinely photobomb him, he just missed.

I'd argue that Chris Davis has to prove himself to THE WORLD. You know, we never talk about it, but the contract that Texas gave Prince Fielder might be even worse than the Davis contract. He's still collecting big fat pay checks for two more years.

Yeah, maybe, but Mr. Davis will receive a fat paycheck from the Orioles until 2037.  The year 2037.

I think we should all just forget about the money and contract and hope he gets his head right.

  12. I hope Chris Davis has an amazing season.  I think there will be an opportunity for him to work with the new guys with the new data and a clean slate.

I am bullish on him in fantasy, etc.

But I can't get those memories out of my head regardless.

  13. Unconfirmed reports that they already have done some video work to get analytics on Davis:

His bat breaking speed was clocked at an incredible 143fps!

They clocked his “slow, dejected walk” back to the dugout at an unimpressive 2.98fps, so there is room for improvement there.

  14. He is 25, has hit .291/.321/.390 in 9 seasons in the minors and winter ball, he plays every position except Catcher, has an option remaining and is under control until 2022 season.

He has 71 more RBI than strikeouts in that time.

the Yankees wanted him enough to have him, and it seems like they know what they are doing somewhat.

Better than Susac and we need players at the position....
