Guys please don’t criticize Elias. I am sure that somewhere between his omniscient capabilities and Sig’s super-genius, AI, future precision predicting computers; this move makes perfect sense!

Yeah I love comments like this, Yes this move would have  made more sense 3 or 4 years ago, but its today and the only reason you get to condescend Mike Elias is because of what hes done the last  5 years ( build this team into a real contender ) You're doing a good job keep up the good work.

With this club the questions are largely going to be on the pitching side.  We should probably get used to that for the next few years.

For all these guys that looked good first time out or not, its important to remember that they have not played a game yet, its Spring Training, Relax wait to judge when the regular season starts

My first thought is: I kind of like Wells 3rd because I just think he's more trustworthy than Kremer, at least until he hits that mid-season wall.

My second thought is: please hurry up, John.

I trust the first 4 but we need Means

I like the wild card pick of Holliday to be the key difference maker, but I think I’ll be pulling for a mostly healthy season/comeback player candidate John Means to help the rotation.

Yes I'll agree with your second part because at this point almost zero is expected of him, and being as I'm one of his biggest apologists, I'll go with John Means.

Adam Frazier, divisive even in the afterlife!   I was happy to play him in the Pirates’ all-star square in Immaculate Grid yesterday, a correct annswer given by only 0.9% of those who voted correctly.   And his two-out game-tying double in the 9th inning of the Sept. 17 Tampa game was probably the most thrilling moment of the 2023 season.  So, I’ll have only fond memories of The Pariah.

Yes but Tate Akin and Givens Contributed more

The difference is I actually bothered to show what version of WAR I was using.  I wasn't just saying WAR as if there was an agreement among them.

Also, below average isn't pretty good, it's below average, it's in the term.  I'm sure he's fabulous at baseball compared to me, but that isn't the standard.

I do agree that guys that were hurt all season were hurt all season.

Again for Gods sake answer the Question what were Tate Givens and Akin worth last year? More or less than Frazier.

  7. 3 minutes ago, Can_of_corn said:

It's disingenuous to only spout the flavor of WAR that best supports your claim without even identifying which you are using.

Frazier was a below average player last season that hit well in clutch situations.

His defense was painful to watch.

You did not read my post ( I referenced Frazier to Givens Tate and Akin) yes and you you get to use you're flavor of War to disparage Frazier. Fine maybe he was below league average which is pretty good and what he was brought here to do. And by yore own admission had clutch hits. What were Akin Givens and Tate by any standard of WAR you want to use

I especially like that ADAM FRAZIER was all caps 😂

Yeas I also love fact that posters here cling to the notion that ADAM FRAZIER (1.7 war) was some of Givens Akin or Tate, who combined contributed nothing to this team. Hopefully Tate can bring us some good injury news and be 2021 or 2022. But you're right its next guy up, we won were our depth last, same might be true this year.

There are several things that teams do I cannot understand.

    1. Signing DH only players

    2. Draft and develop exclusively relief pitchers

    3. Spending a high draft pick on 1B

Obviously, there are some exceptions but these limit team's roster options.

Exactly. This roster has been constructed since the day we became competitive to not need a dedicated DH. This post is silly.

John - great to see you here. Put your money where your mouth is and go sign Snell, putting an end to this Cease madness.

Was trading For Burnes good enough for you

Not necessarily. The Mateo of April 2023 could show up and actually play that well most of the year. It would be great for the team. But I wouldn't bet on that happening. It's such a small outlier of his overall sample size.

What OPS north of 1000 for the year, nobody's going to bet that. At this point Mateo is a platoon player against LHP, a late inning Defensive sub and Elite Speed Pinch running late in games (which has more value in post season)

I'm starting to look at Vavra as under the radar potential competition for the platoon/backup 2B role as a left handed hitter. He can play the outfield too. He's had flashes during the 2022 season when he showed he could string together a chunk of games getting on base. There was a stretch he seemed pretty consistent at getting on base. But with Vavra, he's the type of guy that needs steady At Bats in order to produce. If you only play him sporadically with a PA here and there on rare occasions, he seems to struggle with the sporadic appearances.

This of course, all depends on what the team decides to do with Holliday for their long term plan.

Nah with Cowser and Kjerstad both LH outfielders and Holliday LH infielder  , does not seem likely.  Decent OBP guy but does not do enough else ( speed, defense, power) If hes got a future in MLB its probably with someone else. Barring injuries strictly an ORG. depth piece. ( Stowers is the same boat)

The first 7 years are only part of the story. If anything goes wrong at all, the team is on the hook for an additional $140m over 4 years. I don’t think that’s likely to happen with Gunnar but you never know, and that’s transferring a massive amount of risk to the team.

If the player stays healthy and performs, it’s fine for both sides. If anything derails the player’s career, it’s a pretty massive hit to withstand. Give me the team options like the Mariners have with the Julio deal if the player is earning that protection.

Well the thread is Witt vs Adley(11 year Ext.)No I would not do that. 7 years 8 at the most having confidence that the FO would manage him correctly (Much like last year 105 games started at catcher 45 at Dh, appeared in another 5 off the bench.) that's going to require a commitment to a quality backup catcher ( at least Mcann or his equal)

Yeah, we have 4 solid RPs where we have a good idea what we’re getting - Kimbrel, Cano, Coulombe, Perez - plus Irvin.  They of course have the typical RP volatility, but they’re locked in health permitting.

Then it’s 3 spots for righties, one of which will ultimately need to be an optionable arm, with a group that has a wide range of outcomes - Wells, Tate, Webb, Baker, Baumann. I’d rank them in that order of my confidence right now (if Tate is actually healthy), but by the end of 2024 I wouldn’t be really surprised at whatever order they end up.

The question now is how does Elias feel about that group and is he willing to DFA the out of options Webb/Baumann for someone outside the organization? Or even to get both Wells and Tate in the MLB bullpen?

How is Wells not locked in? (Because he has options?) All things being equal its you're 5 plus Wells, Probably   Webb/Baumann with Tate and Baker (with options) to Norfolk. Of course Trades, ST performance< injuries could change this

According to one of the supposed insiders, the WS presented the Os with a list of 3 players and they wanted 2 of them. Maybe Mayo was one of those guys but I think the assumption is one of Cowser or Kjerstad and Westburg.

Thats not a deal I would do over what we did for Burnes but it is a deal I would have done.

If they still want to deal with the Os for Cease, as I said before, I think they have to take Kremer back along with one of those 2 OFers.

Nah, you probably just slipped there. I understand the asking price for Cease just went down, But one of the 2 OFs plus Kremer for Cease, you do that all day long, but CWS dont. Even if they do you still need a BP piece. ECab and Max Meyer were talked about (if their even in play) Free agents as Well, Would not be surprised if Elias is still  in talks with Milwaukee, And BP piece is probably his focus

Yea I tend to think Munoz is close to untouchable for a team looking to contend. His statcast numbers are unbelievable.  What a stud pitcher no one talks about.

They have Speier too who has some impressive numbers.

Cleveland is definitely a team to look at..as is Miami. I had forgotten that Miami is putting Puk into their rotation. They definitely have some expandable pitchers and even if it’s just to work on things out of the pen for now, give me ECab.

I also still think Kopech should be on the radar for a reliever role.

Yeah I love ECab out of the pen, potential Backup starter, Sign me up for Max Meyer as well.
