Would hope that he'd come out of the gates charging, but it's been the opposite.

I hope that we're not seeing a regression here but he's always struck me as a guy who didn't have much to regress to...not a high velo guy, so losing a tick or two off the fastball is going to be very hard for him.

Too early to tell, but the early returns are not good and not encouraging.

Wells needs to be in the bullpen where he can hopefully show a little more velocity.   I think they really need to acquire another starter.

People seem to think that it’s a given that Irvin is the one to move to the bullpen when Means comes back but I’m not sure why that is. Wells certainly is a contender, he’s been pretty bad.

I think Irvin is a better starter than Wells.

He looked good in the PH only because he swung at the first pitch was, amazingly, a strike.  The AB last night was, typically, awful.

    Typical Hays AB this season.

    1. Swing at a pitch a foot out of the zone for strike one

    2. Take a hittable pitch in the SZ for strike two.

    3. Swing and miss at a ball one foot outside the zone OR take a pitch in the strike zone for strike three.

    4. or make contact and ground out to the left side for a double play.

    Fixed that for ya...

We were hitting the ball hard last night.  Even early.  Just took time for them to fall in.

Grayson did good for not having his A game too.  I'm confident he wouldn't have given up any runs in OPACY.  Those off the wall would be outs.  The pop-up in RF would have been seen...

BoSox rotation and some RPs are under-the-radar good too.

I'm not sure about that last sentence.  Their starters have no track record and look like they totally rely on sweepers and breaking stuff.   Once hitters start leaving that stuff alone, I think they will get hammered.

  5. My thinking is that Santander and Hays are likely gone after this season.   I could also see Mountcastle being dealt if Mayo is ready.   I'd keep Kjerstad as pretty much a full-time DH, let Stowers/Norby be the Lowenstein/Roenicke of the early 80's teams in RF, Cowser in LF and keep Mullins around for another year in center, hoping that Bradfield is ready for 2026.

Of course, all of this hinges around everyone staying healthy and continuing to produce.

I'm enjoying this dialog...some say Hays has little/no value, others say we need to get something "better than Scott" for him. Ultimately, I think the lineup is better with Kerstad in it instead of Hays. However, if that means only getting 70 cents on the dollar in a trade, is it still something we should pursue? Interesting question. One we may have to some day answer about Mountcastle (to make room for Mayo/Basallo).

When I said "better than Scott", I don't think it necessarily means a reliever.   I was thinking of dealing Hays for a young arm or two that Elias/Sig may see nice peripherals in the lower minors.  That would allow them to deal Hays AND promote Stowers or Norby or Kjerstad.

Yeah but if he can be had for Hays, I'd make that trade all day. You solve 2 problems by improving on the Heasley bullpen spot and creating room for Kjerstad/Stowers.

I think we may be a little hasty on Hays.   If we are going to trade him, I'd rather it be for someone better than Scott.

We have got to find room for another outfielder to come up from Norfolk...I think Kerstad before Stowers (though both have earned it). How do we make room? We have to trade away one of our vets. At this point, I think we keep Mullins and trade one of the corners. However, with Santander being on the last year of his contract, he might be harder to move to a low payroll team. So, I conclude that Hays is the guy we should shop. After all, he has four decent tools (and batting average isn't typically horrible), plays the game the right way, is by all accounts a great clubhouse guy, AND, for what it is worth, he was the starting LF in last year's all-star game (doesn't mean anything, but easier for the acquiring GM to sell). Surely, there is a team that would pony up a decent reliever for Austin, no? Here are a few thoughts:

Target 1: Marlins - Tanner Scott. Why does MLB's worst team need a good bullpen pitcher on an expiring contract? At least Hays would give them an everyday bat for this year and next.

Target 2: Pirates - David Bednar. Bucs are for real, and so far Bednar has been awful. Assuming he is not hurt, we can bet he will get it together. We would have to add a prospect or two (Norby/Beavers?) to make it happen, but a typical Bednar would be worth the cost and has this year plus two more (I think) remaining on his contract.

Target 3: Angels - Matt Moore and Andrew Wantz. Moore is a solid bullpen guy who has seen it all. Can still get guys out. Wantz is a AAA reliever who can come up in a pinch (also childhood friends with my daughter, so that's fun for us!).

    Your preferred targets...What say ye?

Caught the tail end of the Marlins/Yanks game last night on MLB after the O's game...I'm a "no" on Mr. Scott.   He was very wild and did not look comfortable even though he picked up the save vs. the Yankees.

Generally unqualified quote from Brandon Hyde here reported by Matt Weyrich

Brandon Hyde on today's lineup, which includes Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser: "I think how it looks tonight is probably going to be how we're going to go for a while and a majority of nights."

    Music to my ears...

Assuming (I know) that Westburg is now the primary 3B, Holliday the primary 2B, and Mateo probably the #1 backup at 2B, Ramon Urias must be asking himself “What’s left for me”?

Ramon seems like a good guy.   Personally, with the versatility and speed we now have on the infield, I'd rather keep Urias as the backup infielder than Mateo.

To me, the only thing Mateo offers is speed.

I’d do something with Urias. And immediately call up Coby Mayo. Coby Mayo is in Gunnar Henderson territory of ascending through the minors. He’s a stud

    I'd rather it be Mateo.

good we need more national attention as to why we have Kemp and Urias over them

    Don't forget Mateo as well.
