I don't think it was about being worn down. They overachieved and didn't have a playoff caliber roster. Put 2 more reliable starters in the rotation and replace a few hitters with one to two 800+ OPS players, and this team is dancing.
I'm not sure about that. You can still pitch around the most dangerous hitter in the league even if the runner is on first instead of second. I know I would have done so.
