  1. Moose's hall of fame speech speaks volumes with what he doesn't say. He doesn't name a single person by name associated with his time in Baltimore. He thanks his Stanford coaches by name. He thanks the fans of Baltimore which is a nice touch, but not a single coach, manager, teammate (not counting Baines) much less ownership. Then when he gets to his Yankee tenue he immediately mentions Joe Torre, the Steinbrenner family and how great it was to play for the Yankees. I don't blame him. Just thought it was interesting. I'm surprised he didn't go into the hall as a Yankee. It's a classy touch to the fans here that he didn't.
  2. I like Brown. He sounds like the average MLB announcer for other teams which is an improvement over Hunter and Manfra.
  3. Perhaps the problem isn't Brown but who he is paired with. When I hear Dave Johnson I immediately switch to another channel. Hunter I can stand only if I really want to catch up on what the O's are doing. I like the Nationals' radio guys and find myself listening for a while even though my first instinct is to switch channels as I am not a Nats fan. The other day I found myself engaged listening to a Padres broadcast. They were glowing all over Manny and I found their So Cal baseball talk entertaining. The weirdest was last week while watching a Yankee/O's spring training game on MLB network. I don't know the main broadcasters, both former players; but they had Willie Randolph as their guest and he was fantastic.. You could tell he respects the game and all who played it. I watched the entire game just because I loved listening to his stories. He seemed to be rooting for everyone on the field to do well, even the O's players; while the main two announcers just ignored anyone who wasn't a Yankee. I can see why Willie has been a coach and manager . You'd think with the O's being as bad as they are they would get some good broadcasters in here to light some interest. With MLB games in all markets available on MLB TV, MLB Game Day Audio, and Sirius/XM there are other options. Hopefully Brown will be good.
  4. Gausman starting for Atlanta game 3. So depressing seeing all of our ex-players in the post season. I am rooting for Manny while I have the chance. If he goes to NY or Boston I will stop.
  5. Ah, now I think I have one on you my friend. I remember that incident occurring after the O's traded Mike Parrott for Carlos Lopez with the Mariners. Earl was pissed because he wasn't informed of the trade prior to it going down and he had no interest in Lopez. Peters replied that they couldn't get a hold of Earl and had no choice. Both deals occurred on the same day of the winter meetings, Dec 7, 1978.
  6. I'll never forget the Sports Illustrated pre-season analysis for '77 which said, "If Earl Weaver wins with this bunch he truly is a genius." It made me mad at the time and I still smile thinking about it.
  7. Hmm, I stand corrected. For some reason I could have swore Baylor had two seasons in Oakland but looking up his stats I see you are correct. Good show old man.
  8. I saw Reggie's first game in an O's uniform - May 2, 1976. It was game two of a double header against his old team - the Oakland A's. I don't remember anything about the game. I do remember Reggie hanging out by the visitor's bullpen talking to the A's pitchers in between innings. That trade has to rank as one of the worst in O's history. If you're going to pull the trigger on a deal like that you have to resign him. I don't know what Peters was thinking. He knew the O's were on a shoe-string budget. Baylor was signed for another two years. Torrez had some good years after the trade as well. The other guy they got, Ken Holtzman, did nothing but complain. Later that year they were able to unload him to the MFY in the big deal for Dempsey. Tippy. and McGregor. I think Peters thought Reggie would sign for a discount because his mother lived in Baltimore and Reggie used to play for Johnny's Used Cars - a sandlot team in West Baltimore that had a lot of success. Peters was a fool. Good article on Johnny's here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1088866/index.htm
  9. You beat me to starting a thread about this by a few seconds. I don't post often or start many threads, but I am listening to this and can't believe what I am hearing. After 11 straight years of losing Davis can't understand why the fans are so interested in the minors rather than the "major league" Orioles. Really Tom? You don't get it? Wow. I really liked it when Phil Wood disputed Davis' ridiculous comments by pointing out that fans of the Phillies ARE talking about who's hot in Reading on Philadelphia talk shows. Why am I listening to this? What time does the draft start?
