  1. Heston reminds me of a young Boog Powell.
  2. Rays will get tired by Sunday. Then the O's steal one and get that tie breaker.
  3. Thank you Frobby. The game thread last night was a particularly tough read. If some of these fans complaining about Adley were managing the O's in the 80's/90's Cal's streak never would have happened. I'm sure the Rays would love it if we sat one of our top two players for the biggest series of the year.
  4. I love NFL Plus. Instead of paying $100 or more for YouTube tv or Hulu Live I pay $16 and get all the locally aired games live, replays of all games, NFL network, and Red Zone. I have to watch on my tablet but that is okay. I have Paramount Plus for Ravens games on CBS. I signed up for that with a one year promotional price of $5 per month, I think. MLB tv I get for free as a T-Mobile customer. Love it but O's are blacked out. I'm going to have to splurge on YouTube tv this October.
  5. I went down the same Earl Weaver rabbit hole after viewing this thread. I had to show my teenage son who Earl was. I showed him the clip of Earl arguing with umpire Bill Haller. He thought Earl was crazy. Then, feeling nostalgic, I alone watched the 2013 Remembering Earl ceremony (all 40 minutes of it). This was followed up by Earl's HOF induction speech. I then watched Andre Dawson's complete induction speech, as it auto-played and felt too disrespectful to a great player from my youth to turn it off. There are a lot of good life lessons in those speeches.
  6. Some guys will improve. Some will revert to career means. A new crop of rookies will half look good/half get shuttled back and forth from Norfolk. Overall I expect their talent to steadily increase, but your last sentence says it all.
  7. Inheritance and estate tax issues only will come into play when Georgia passes away. Federal estate tax and Md inheritance tax is exempt when passing property between spouses. That is of course if she is to receive the property in PA's will. https://marylandtaxes.gov/individual/estate-inheritance/estate-inheritance-tax.php#:~:text=0.9% tax on the clear, property passing to other individuals.
  8. I don't see next season's team being too much better than this one. I am assuming no significant free agent signings which has been the norm under Elias. With that said, this year's squad is squarely in the mix of teams that can will it all. Odds are they won't, but I am looking forward to the playoffs.
  9. Hit 'em where they ain't. Very impressive bat/ball control. Although I doubt we see Holliday this season, it makes sense to maximize the amount of time he, Adley, and Gunnar can play together. Sadly, I don't see JA opening up the checkbook, ever. This will ultimately lead to Elias' departure, and once he is gone so too will be these 'good ole days' .
  10. I had his baseball card a lot. I didn't start watching baseball until '75, so I missed Hood as an Oriole. I didn't realize he played as long as he did. Good for him. I see he was part of the trade sending Boog to Cleveland for Dave Duncan. I do remember Duncan. In '76 there was an exhibition game held mid-season between the O's and their AAA team from Rochester. Such a crazy thing would never be held now. Duncan got hit on the hand by a pitch and he let everyone in the ballpark know he didn't like it. He used language my parents did not approve.
  11. I'm in the opposite boat. As a true cord cutter, I don"t have masn, don"t have any live channels, so no FOX or TBS. I do pay for MLB TV where I watch O's highlights, live games of other teams, and MLB content. I'd gladly pay more for live Orioles games. I hope this changes in my lifetime.
  12. Thanks for this thread. I went to the game the other day and parked at the stadium lots for the first time. I didn't realize they were so reasonably priced.
  13. I'm not freaking out over McKenna's play. The dude made a spectacular play earlier in the game. If the Orioles want to win games, how about not giving up 7 runs in the first 8 innings? The starting pitching is mediocre. The bullpen is missing a couple of arms and maybe due for some regression. Unless they turn this around there will be many 10-9, 9-8 games this year.
  14. Brought back a lot of good memories. Really liked the interview with Ray Miller.
  15. I generally like their show. Considering it is a MASN production, I think it is pretty good. So much better than the days of Dave Johnson and Tom Davis.
  16. FYI , T-Mobile usually gives out a free year of MLB- TV as part of their Tuesday deal promotions. Of course, you have to be a customer of either their mobile phone or home internet. I just signed up for their new home internet service, just so I could get mlb-tv for a year. If I don"t like it , I will cancel, but that won't affect the MLBTV service until it renews next year.
  17. I tried rooting for the Padres. I even bought their hat. I find their tv announcers too annoying. They treat every Padre home run like it just won game 7 of the World Series. The "Slam Diego" thing also gets old.
  18. I love these entire playoff games on YouTube. Just yesterday I stumbled on the 1986 Red Sox/Angels series. I started watching and couldn't stop. Just a great series as was the '86 Astros/Mets. The funniest thing was the series' announcers were Al Michaels and Jim Palmer. We all know what those guys sound like today. Going back in time I hardly recognized them. I also started the intro to the 1981 division series (yes, division series due to the '81 strike) between the Royals and A's. Palmer also was the color guy for that one. You can tell he was rather new to the broadcasting thing. Today, he is as professional as it gets.
  19. Eve was plucked from the Astros organization after their Roberto Osuna controversy in 2019. She quit the Astros shortly after the season and Elias scooped her up. A really good hire.
  20. Hard pass. This team is supposed to be contending next season. No room for flyers.
  21. What is the protocol for these things? Do guys still get to wear the chain, hat, or blazer if they hit a Homer while their team is losing 10-2? I like it as far as props go.
  22. Great interview. Enjoyed listening to Ross Grimsely as well. Great to see these guys in such good health.
  23. Interesting points. I wonder how Rays' players did post-Tampa compared to how they fared with the Rays organization. Seems like most of the guys they developed did pretty well elsewhere when employed by non-Rays teams. If this is true, it would suggest your described usage is more beneficial to the development years of the player. That kind of reminds me of how the old O's used to use pitchers in Weaver's day. Pitchers were eased into the rotation by building up their experience in the pen. Guys like Flanagan, McGregor, Ed Farmer (I don't know why I thought of him). Seems like a better approach than throwing Dean Kremer out there for maximum innings at an ERA of 7.55.
