If people are saying "$24 for a beer is insane, but I can always just lump that in with the rest of my crippling credit card debt" the situation may be more dire than I thought.

But then again, I've also read the the average new car transaction in 2023 was $47k, and 10-year loans are not uncommon. So I guess a lot of people figure they can just roll the loans over until they die...

That’s exactly what I was thinking about. I see these videos of people claiming to have $1200-$1500 car notes.  Dropping $100 on beer at a ballgame probably doesn’t make a lot of people hesitate.

Wait... you're telling me the Nats charge $24 for a single craft beer?  A few years ago I was in LA and I got a Dodger dog and a beer (I forget what kind) and it was $20 and I thought that was extortionist. I was kind of shocked when the Angels were charging $14 for a beer, and FedEx was long infamous for $11 cans of Miller Light. $24 should make the Nats owners cower in shame. That's basically like a soda machine where a Dr. Pepper is $11. They might as well have some kind of huge goon standing next to the concessions yelling out "hey yous, the beers are $24. If you don't like it, get the hell out of my stadium!"

I have heard that Atlanta is great for food prices. The Mercedes dome... thing... has the cheapest food and drink in MLS. I suppose the Braves are copying them. Good for them.

Aside from Atlanta, this feeds into the narrative that American sports are for upper and upper-middle-class people. Others need not come. Which is fine in a vacuum, fine for some kind of economics class experiment, fine for owners whose primary goal is short-term profits. But what happens down the road when the fanbase doesn't really include people who're not making six figures? Or since nearly all US sports are doing this, that a significant percentage of the population just doesn't regularly go to live sports because it's outrageously expensive? Like I mentioned, me, the wife, and two kids going to DC United on Saturday and the total bill will probably be $350, and that's with discounted tickets and if I can park at Ft. McNair next to the stadium for free.

They are 24+ ounces. Still a rip off, but I guess they justify it as “well these suckers will pay $15 for a 16oz Bud Light, let’s try charging more for a larger, better beer.”

I don’t know if it significantly impacts people with more modest incomes. Credit is still plentiful and people aren’t afraid to finance non necessities.

  3. Definitely want Maye. But I’m excited about the staff that has been put together to help a QB succeed. Lots of coaching that has worked with first round and high end talent: Mahomes, Mayfield, Murray, Herbert, Hurts.

A lot of time when a QB “busts” the drafting organization is partly to blame. So whomever they decide to take is theoretically in a good environment to maximize their talent.

I’d stick at 2 though. The exciting part about Thursday is whether or not they trade back into the first to take a tackle.

Sending Jackson down does nothing, there is nothing left to prove down there. He is taking good ABs, he is working counts, he looks fine in the field etc. I have used the Cowser comp, not to say he should be sent down, in the sense that Cowser looked particularly lost at times during his callup last year. Jackson is facing some professional adversity for the first time as a professional keep running him out there.

The fortunate thing is he isn't hurting the team in a significant way right now, and when it finally does click the Orioles will be just that much better.

Sending him down gives the team control of age 26 season, no?

Passan has actually changed his viewpoint on this which is a good thing to see in this day and age of media. As previously stated the reward is still higher than the risk of pitching with the new mechanics. If you are a high school sophomore looking to make Varsity, 87-88 is much better than 84. When you are a college junior a few MPH could be the difference in 100’s of thousands of dollars. Strider was close to signing a 200 million dollar contract. The person I listened to yesterday was using Verlander as example. He said there was a reason he went to ODU, not to bash the school. He was pitching with good mechanics and building healthy velocity. The interviewer asked specifically about Grayson and he is one of 95% of pitchers with bad mechanics. He also noted that Skenes looks like Mark Prior 2.0, which will be interesting to track.

One extra thing he noted was looking into pre-tacking balls to take off pressure in forearm. I personally think they could do something with the seams instead but interesting.

I saw an old interview with Tyler Glasnow who made a comment about the crackdown on sticky stuff. He said he was against the Spider Tac, but using nothing (sunscreen plus rosin) was making him change his grip causing his arm to hurt in ways it never did.

I am planning on going. Any others?

Has anyone been there? Any recommendations on seats?

This is my second post, but I've viewed for a long time. May the series prove fruitful to both teams.

Working in DC, I go to a bunch of Nats games. Metro drops you off. Not sure what your budget is, but I typically buy a ticket in the nosebleeds and watch from their standing room only spots. They have them in left through center field and along the first and third base lines.

I got my second lowest score ever today, an 8.

      Hide contents

Bert Campaneris 0.8%, Dale Murphy 3%, Cesr Tovar 0.5%

Ty Wigginton 0.3%, Terry Pendleton 2%, Chico Salmon 0.08%

Al Bumbry 0.1%, Roberto Clemente 0.5%, Jorge Mateo 0.4%

It's kind of ridiculous that Bumbry has a lower percentage than Campaneris or Tovar.

I considered using Al Rosen for MVP 3B, but I was only about 85% sure he's won one.  He might have done better than Pendleton.

I used a former Oriole for 3B MVP at 0.9. He was known as a SS and won his MVP for another team.

Overall score of 12, six former Orioles.

9/9, 64. My first 9/9 in a while-- got all O's in the Catcher and 2000 hits column. I was surprised that my choice in Jays 2000 hits was the top result, as opposed to a different more well-known O's/Jays guy.

The other Jays/O’s guy is neck a neck with the one you selected (my selection too).

  9. Got 68 today. Initially wasn’t trying to do ex Os, but had a bunch. Though I got Saltalamachia and Teagarden confused for TX catcher.

Why didn’t the Orioles keep Kevin Brown for more than one year? He had his best years after he left. Could have put us over the top in 96 and 97.

Who was your Milw/Phi Oriole?   I wracked my brain and couldn't come up with one.    I ended up going with Randy Lerch, pretty proud of that pull but not an Oriole which is always my first effort.

    The legendary Paul Bako.

    9/9 40 Orioles Grid today

      Hide contents

Luis Polonia, Dave Kingman, Rollie Fingers

Cecil Fielder, Gregg Jeffries, Hank Greenberg

Eddie Murray, Mike Bordick, Vladimir Guerrero

Was thinking about Luis Aparicio for the Orioles HoFer and I probably should have gone that route.

What did you get for Oriole HOF. I got 0.7, but it wasn’t the two you mentioned. I got 97 overall. Had a lot of popular answers.

Bellinger was apparently offered longer deals by 3 teams including the Cubs.  They were at lower AAV, but 5+ years. Bellinger chose to gamble on himself and take a shorter deal with opt outs so he could have a chance at a mega deal.

I wonder what those deals looked like. This year, there was Ohtani and then he was the next big position player. Next offseason, you have Soto, Bregman, and Alonso lining up for big contracts.

He made some comment about “keeping him warm” at SS.

Interesting fact: in 2023, the average team had more chances at 2B (674) than SS (617).   3B was distantly behind at 422.

Would that have to do with the elimination of the shift? In 2022 and prior, you’d have SS and 3B getting chances on the right side.

  14. I was scrolling mindlessly through X and saw a post about a guy sharing his terrible experience with a restaurant after he used his credit card’s travel insurance when he was charged $250 for canceling a reservation. (I had no idea that was a thing). The owner called him pathetic for disputing the charge. He posts about it and the owner threatens to sue.

Based on which thread this post is in, can you guess the owner? 🤣
