I agree, but I also think we can take a chance on his bat in September. The bigger risk is that we do like what we did with Adley, and wait until after June next year to call him up and he still finishes top 2 in ROY and wins the year of service time back. I’d rather we just lump all our chips together this year and have them going for a WS together.

This time last year nobody saw Gunnar coming. Holliday is cut from that same cloth.

    Game One vs RHP

    1. Mullins L CF

    2. Adley S C

    3. Gunnar L 3B

    4. Santa S DH

    5. O’Hearn L 1B

    6. Hays R LF

    7. Hicks S RF

    8. Frazier L 2B

    9. Holliday L SS

    McCann, Mountcastle, Mateo, Westburg, Urias

This time last year pretty much everyone here was clamoring for Gunnar and couldnt believe why he wasnt called up yet. I think we all were excited and hoping for him to be called up first week of August (or earlier) with how he was producing at Norfolk, but it ended up being August 31. Gunnar seems to be an elite SS right now both in the field and at the plate. I dont see them moving him off that. Holliday is far more likely next year but I guess anything is possible. Westburg is playing really well (0.9 WAR in 27 games) and seems to be hitting a stride here for us. Hopefully he starts to get full time starting duties between 2B and 3B.

There's a chance flare ups like this could be common throughout his career.  If you look at him walk, he overly rotates his pelvis (it is present when he runs too, but harder to notice).  The left side is much more prominant than the right.  That puts extra pressure on his lower back.

Often times this can be fixed by correcting imbalances or a weak core.  However, his trainers/therapists and the team s&c coaches have been fully aware of this for years and have surely tried to work to correct it.  Likely the root cause is the angle the femoral head joins with the pelvis.

Did you stay at a holiday inn express last night?

After seeing Adley just lazy swipe at bad pitches yesterday instead of try to block them like a Catcher normally does, I'd be perfect fine with seeing James McCann play today and letting the veteran work with Grayson Rodriguez. I'm not sure if Adley is getting worn out or not.

There's also a good chance they might try to keep Gunnar in the lineup though, because they kept him in against the last lefty lineup, and he hit a home run.  It seems like they want to keep trying to allow him to develop against left handed pitching.

Yea my biggest question mark when constructing my Hyde prediction was DH'ing Adley or Gunnar. Its been a while since theyve given Gunnar a day off and I could see them doing it with probably the toughest lefty in the league on the mound. Just wish it wasnt the same day that Mounty, McCann, Mateo, Urias are all playing.

I have more Trust for Baker / Bauman entering a clean inning.

Yea I hear you, I do too. Inheriting runners is hard. And you need great relievers to keep those from scoring. But we've seen plenty of clean innings turn to not clean with our middle relief this year as well. I think we all agree we need 2 additional relievers, or a starter + reliever which pushes someone to the pen this deadline

Is there ever a situation where you bring in Cano to get get you out of the 6th? If so, was that one?

Not saying this is right or wrong, but in this scenario lets say Cano gets out of the 6th and even pitches a clean 7th. Orioles up 2. Who pitches the 8th? You'd be in the same boat. Its less a "when to pitch Cano" problem and more a "we just dont have more than 2 reliable guys on a night to night basis" problem. You've got Coulombe and Baker for the 8th and if they blow it then, this thread is going nuts about "HOW COULDNT YOU SAVE CANO FOR THE 8th!!!"

  6. I can think of at least two hit balls where Colton has been robbed defensively. I know that happens to everyone, but two hits in his sample size change a lot statistically. There was also the ball in Minnesota where he was ruled out running down the line "out of the base line" which should've been another hit. With 23 at bats, 2-3 outs turned hits or vice versa have a pretty significant impact.

  7. Mayo is pretty much untouchable I would think. But if he were traded it wouldnt be for anything less than a young, multi year controlled, TOR level starter. He should be a consensus top 25 prospect end of season. Not sure that match exists..  Mitch Keller? Eury Perez? Spencer Strider? Zac Gallen? Dont think any of those teams would have any interest in trading those type of guys either.

I would say then that you have a higher opinion of Aaron Hicks than I do, and higher than probably most of the posters here.   He’s had a good month, and I’m happy about that.  But nave you noticed that he’s hit .095 over his last 7 games?   He’s more likely to be the Aaron Hicks of the last five years than the Hicks of the last month.   And nobody’s paying $9.6 mm+ for that.  Now, if he plays super well in the 2nd half of 2023, maybe the situation will be different.

I think we are agreeing. I dont think Hicks is a 10+ million guy. I was just saying that it was a possibility if a team did think that.

You clearly don’t understand how this works.  Every dollar up to $9.5 mm that some team pays Hicks is a dollar less that the Yankees have to pay Hicks.  He doesn’t benefit at all unless some team pays him more than $9.5 mm, which will never happen.

I dont understand the contract details and how it works completely you are right. But I am not sure how you came to that conclusion from my post.

I proposed exactly what you are saying.. that a team could pay MORE than the 9.5 million for Hicks. My comparison was Frazier getting 8 million and Gibson getting 10 million. I am not sure what makes Kyle Gibson worth 10 million and not Aaron Hicks.

If this somehow came to pass Hicks would be forfeiting the money owed him in 2025 correct?

Well if this is the case, then yes Hicks should just take a minimum. I am not aware of how his contract works. I was only comparing his value vs league minimum and his value vs a 10 mill and 8 mill older vet.

Can you provide an example of this ever happening?

Of a guy getting cut but having a contract from one team, playing very well for another team and then signing as a free agent somewhere for his going rate? I cannot. I was just trying to think in my head that Hicks would be more valuable on the open market than a Kyle GIbson or an Adam Frazier. I dont see teams just giving up on pursuing him after he gets offered more than league minimum because the yankees are covering the rest. So then it becomes, does Aaron Hicks want to come to Baltimore at what will almost assuredly be a backup role, or look at other options? I dont see Hicks on the 2024 Baltimore Orioles I guess was my overarching thought, and certainly not for the sole reason of "we can just get him at league minimum."

Twins also look bad right now. Their lineup has been offensively challenged. Thought after the All Star break would be a killer schedule but looks a little better now. Padres and Mets have not turned a corner yet and are both under. 500. Astros have injuries. The Yankee offense is anemic.

Every time we say this going into a series our pitching gets absolutely crushed by said "offensively challenged team." Hopefully thats not the case vs Minnesota as we could use a home sweep. Cleveland, Milwaukee, Oakland, KC (the first series), Cubs all had struggling offenses that for whatever reason looked great against us.

You really don't get this one.

The Yankees will pay Hicks 9.5m next season minus what he gets from any team that signs him.

So if the O's sign him for 750K the Yankees will pay him 8.75M.

If some team offers him 1M then the Yankees will pay 8.5m.

Hicks will make 9.5M no matter who he plays for.  Hick does not benefit by some team paying more of this salary.

The only one that benefits from  a higher contract is the Yankees because they have to play less of Hicks salary.

That doesnt stop another team from paying more than minimum just because the Orioles are cheap. Hicks is worth more than league minimum, and is a free agent. Other teams don't care that he has 9.5 million coming from the Yankees. If Kyle Gibson makes 10 million and Adam Frazier makes 8 then I dont see why a team wouldnt pay 10+ for hicks on a one year deal if he produces the rest of the way. There is no way hes just "available" at league minimum for Elias to scoop him up.

  14. Reds throwing lefties next two nights.. No chance they call up Cowser for that. Lefty rookies are Incapable of facing lefties. But, maybe Ortiz gets a start over Frazier tomorrow.

For all the talk about not having a lot of rookies all playing together- the Cincinnati reds have 4 rookies in their starting lineup most days. And ironically enough those guys have been the ones to help spark their recent run.

And when you look at it:

McClain is a solid comp for Westburg/Ortiz in terms of age and rank.

Elly is a solid comp for Gunnar in terms of age and rank.

Cowser is ranked far better than Steer.

We could easily start Gunnar, Cowser, Westburg/Ortiz and be just as well off (probably better) as we are now. They are not REALLY blocked when you look at the production of Frazier and Mateo and really Hicks should drop off a bit and settle in as a great 4th OF. It is increasingly frustrating watching this roster when we have 7-10 guys out of 26 that are easily replaceable.

If Mateo/Urias/Frazier were all lighting the world on fire I understand the sentiment not to replace them with unproven rookies. But, although its beating a dead horse of most everyone here, with our roster this is not the case.

If Mateo goes 0/4 today his OPS will be .599
