Gunnar and De La Cruz spent roughly similar time at each level. Gunnar went from double A to the majors in one year. De La Cruz spent the first part of this year in Triple A, after finishing last year in double A. It took both of them one year after reaching double A to reach the majors. Gunnar and De La Cruz both had their first real full year of MiLB in 2021, are both 21, they both debuted in MLB at 21, Gunnar debuted first. What evidence are you using? Your point would be valid if Gunnar was still in Triple A, or if De La Cruz had skipped Triple A.

The way the Orioles have been promoting prospects from Triple A is incredibly frustrating. But the Orioles certainly didn't slow play Gunnar, nor are they slow playing Holiday.

I never said we slow played either Gunnar or Jackson. In fact we seem to promote through the minors pretty quicly when guys are not challenged. Its once they get to AAA that they stay. And which is why I say Elly would still be in Norfolk. We would still have the same "log jam" with Urias, Mateo and Frazier and they are clearly not ready to bench those guys for a propect, be it a 21 year old top rated guy or a 24 year old with 1.000 OPS.

Wait, if Holiday isn't up until May of next year, you think they're moving him slow? Do you think De La Cruz is 19? He was an international signing on top of all that vs Holiday in the draft. Cruz spent 4* years in the minor

    3 + 1 pandemic

No I dont think that would be moving slow. I was making a comparison of a top rated guy coming into the year in the high minors as opposed to mid season. Jackson Holiday will be 20 next year, not 19. And Elly is 21. Its a fair comparison, just like Gunnar of 2022 is.

Not really. Gunnar was a good not top prospect coming into last year. He began the year in double A and ended it in the majors when he broke out.

De La Cruz began last year in High A and moved up to double A slightly more then halfway through the season. He then began this season in Triple-A.

Yes it is not an identical match, it is close enough to know that De La Cruz would not be up. Point still stands. Just like Jackson Holiday will most likely not be up in May of 2024. I guess we'll see. Gunnar was the number two prospect in baseball in MLB Pipeline mid season top 100.

He will be in AA within a month, which makes it likely he starts next year in AAA. He isn’t staying in AAA all year if he’s healthy and productive.

I dont believe thats the pattern we've seen from Elias. Guys that have made multi level jumps or mid season jumps have genreally started the following season at the same level they ended the previous year. So I could see JH up to AA for the remainder of this year, then starting next year at AA and moving quickly to AAA if hes hot. Then spending a lot of time in AAA as the fans wonder why he isnt called up yet.

I have seen the argument that Ortiz has to play everyday if called up.    However he has been called up already this season and he did not play everyday while up.

Also the O's need to find a way to improve to get back to winning series.  The O's need to hit lefties better.   Ortiz has hit them at AAA.

When the O's were winning it was already to not put their best team on the field because they were winning with what they had.   That is not true anymore.  Now they are losing to good teams.   They need to make moves to make the team better.  Adding Irvin was one move.   Adding Cowser and Ortiz will be two move.

Getting McKenna and Lester off the 26 man roster and replacement them with better players is the way to get better.

I am not disagreeing with you in that I think they need to make some moves to improve the team. This weekend was amazing, but it was against the Royals. To your point. Ortiz was up and not playing every day and they sent him back down for that exact reason. He wont bring those guys up to not play. He is ok with Lester not being an everyday guy it appears. I personally think there is enough at bats to go around for Ortiz/Westburg but I dont think limiting Frazier and Urias/Mateo is in the Orioles plans right now. I hope we hear something tomorrow.

Let's not be misled.    Beating the Royals does not mean the O's can beat the Blue Jays.  The O's lost series to the Rangers, Guardians and Brewers.    Improvement is needed to get back on a winning track.

    I think the O's should:

    Cowser and Ortiz up.

    McKenna options and Lester DFA'd

If it were me I would call up Seth Johnson and put him on the 60 day IL, opening a 40 man roster spot for later.

C- Adley/McCann.   McCann has been hitting righties.  That is where Adley gets his rest from catching.

1B - O'Hearn vs righties,  Mountcastle vs lefties.  I know Mounty hits the Jays well.  I am glad I don't have to make the decision between O'Hearn and Mounty at 1B.

2B - Frazier vs righties,  Ortiz vs lefties (Ortiz is hitting lefties better than Westburg at AAA).  Ortiz defensive replacement in late innings.

SS - Gunnar vs righties,   Mateo vs lefties.  Mateo defensive replacement in late innings.

3B -  Urias vs righties,  Gunnar/Urias vs lefties

    LF - Hays

    CF - Hicks

    RF - Cowser/ Santanders

    DH -Adley/Santander/ Cowser

Will EIias make the moves?   The tension mounts.

Based on your playing time above I dont think he would call up Ortiz or Westburg to only play against lefties when they could be getting consistent at bats. Something needs to give in the IF, be it really limiting the playing time of Frazier or Urias.

As for Cowser. He could be plugged into the OF every single day with Mullins out, so I dont really see why they wouldnt call him up unless he is hurt. He has shown that he has mastered AAA. Plays a strong OF at any position and has a great approach at the plate.

I don't think anything has to happen tomorrow. It would be nice, but what makes tomorrow any different than the last week?

It doesn't appear that they are planning to replace Frazier nor Mateo for that matter. 1B appears to be where we need a player. Can Westburg man 1B? Otherwise, I don't see a spot for him right now. I guess he could DH and move Santander to 1B?

Cowser is a different story, I hope it's just a matter of waiting for "full health".

I don't expect both at the same time though. Our lineup is not really in the best of shape right now, I don't think we can afford to carry 2 acclimating rookies along with the dead weight of Mateo and Mountcastle.

What makes tomorrow different than last week is Cowser has now been back from injury for over a week. Has played full games as they said they wanted him to. Not sure what else there could be unless he's hurt again (not in lineup today)

  8. Was just pinch hit for late in the game. Really hope not for injury. And even the "easing him back in" theory doesnt really stand up. Been back for almost a week, would think he would have clearance to play a whole game especially since it was the 8th inning.. saving him for one inning????

  9. Doubt there will be any promotions for a few weeks with the Tides not playing all week, not to mention Ortiz not playing all last week either.

Get ready for more Urias, Frazier, Mounty, Lester, McKenna, Mateo and Hicks.

  10. I've heard Dylan Cease, Eduardo Rodriguez and Shane Bieber recently mentioned from national media as possibilities. As Billy mentioned its still very early when it comes to those types of things developing.

If I'm the Orioles, given the strength of the MILB system, and the lack of interest in spending in free agency, I would be very hesitant to go for a rental (at least with our top 100 guys). I would hope that if we are trading our top end talent that its for a guy who will be here a few years (Cease over ERod). However, I do think our system is also at a place where we can also trade from depth rather than from the top for a rental, ala the Dodgers for Manny in 2018.

Mullins, Cowser, and Hicks are all LH. The orioles love having platoon options. I posted this in cowsers’s thread, but I think the most likely demotion right now for Cowser would be Vavra (and then yes he plays LF and santander moves to 1b/dh)

Hicks is a switch hitter. Thats why I think McKenna is the one who could be optioned. Hicks solves the platoon issue and starts in CF against lefties until Cedric is back, and fills in for all of Hays/Cowser/Santander otherwise. I dont know if hes better than McKenna or not, but if the Orioles think he is, then calling up Cowser and allowing HIcks to take over the 4th OF role (that plays more than McKenna) then that is the route that makes the most sense to me. I think having Westburg get innings in the OF as well as obviously being able to play 3B/SS/2B is the potential replacement for Vavra.

I have a solution. Bring Cowser up asap. Play him in LF regularly. Play Hays in RF regularly. Allow Santander to DH against LHP and replace Mountcastle regularly as 1B against RHP.

Why not bring up Cowser for McKenna and let him play CF? If they like Hicks more than McKenna this makes sense. Let Hicks take over the 4th OF/defensive replacement role that plays a little more often than McKenna does but your everyday OF is Hays/Cowser/Santander. Hicks can spell all three of them. O'Hearn should not be RF. I guess Vavra would be a candidate too since hes not playing at all, but he bring a little more versatility as he can play the IF and emergency catcher.
