  1. Not sure what Elias thinks, but will they still be looking at DL Hall as a starter? He's been pretty damn awesome since coming back up. I'm sure the stuff is playing up as a reliever but he always had stuff. Command has been much improved and so have the results.

    So you've got:

Bradish, Rodriguez, Means, Kremer, Wells, Hall  as guys on the roster. I think you can make a trade for a stud SP and then let the others fight it out for the 5th spot and also as much needed SP depth/bullpen help. But I am not counting out Hall if thats the route they take. He has been really impressive.

Out of 27 Innings, we got to enjoy 11 competitive innings where it looked like we had a chance. That was a blast!

11 seems very high. We had the lead for not even one out the entire series. So I guess you count the first three innings of game one, and the first inning game two?

Tbh, I don’t really have high hopes for free agency after this last offseason.  When is the last time this organization made a real splash?  The 90s?  Payroll was reasonable in the 2010s, but it’s not like they brought in any stars.

Any real hot stove action will have to be on the trade front.

The last time we made a "big" splash was probably Ubaldo.. but the last time we really went out and got a star and probably out spent others to do so was Miguel Tejada heading into the 2004 season.

Tampa won’t have McClanahan next year and we will see about Franco but they could get healthier and be a big threat again. I’m honestly more worried about Toronto and Boston than NY for 2024.

Some talk that Boston is a real sleeper for Othani.

    Tampa will be loaded

    Yandy Diaz

    Caminero/Franco (if hes there)

    Arozarena

    Raley

    J Lowe

    Paredes

    B Lowe

    Siri

    Betencourt/FA

Glasnow, Rasmussen, Springs, Eflin, Civale, Baz

Plus whatever moves they decide to make. Yes I know Rasmussen and Springs and Baz are coming back from TJ and will miss more time.

    9/22

The defense was just atrocious tonight.  Santander slipped and let a line drive right at him get past him for 2 bases.  Gunnar booted a grounder right at him.  Westburg stopped a hard grounder, then couldn’t pick it up.  Urias booted a chopper right at him.   And then Mullins took that last double off the wall, turned to throw, and….dropped the ball.  Just a terrible game defensively.

I will say that Santander also made a couple of nice catches, and the one he missed was because he slipped.

We had some defensive stinkers in early April for sure, but last night had to be the worst defense of the year. Overall we have been very good on defense, so hopefully we rebound today. We win that game without the Santander slip most likely. The ball at Gunnar was 107/108 off the bat and took a tough hop, it happens. Just unfortunate and magnifies all the other mishaps of our rotation and bullpen. We desperately need a win.

We have been pretty lucky with injuries, especially compared to Tampa.

I've seen people say that we've been very lucky with injuries this year and I'm not sure I agree. I havent looked it up, but I feel like last year was far "luckier" when it came to injuries and we've just kind of run with the narrative. Yes, in comparison to the Rays, its not close, but the Rays have been crushed by injuries to their main guys, specifically to the starting rotation.

So far this year we have had the following:

    - #1 SP out for the majority of the season.

    - Starting AS and GG Center Fielder out for two significant stints.

    - Starting replacement CF and corner out field fill in out for two stints and looking like a third.

    - Elite closer most likely done for the season starting mid august

    - Starting 1B out significant time with vertigo and now shoulder issue

    - #1 SP from the first half sent down to MILB for majority of the second half with arm fatigue

We've also had much smaller issues of guys just being banged up that I'm sure all teams have every year. But Gunnar missed several games on two different occasions with a low back, Frazier missed time with a thumb, McCann spent time on the IL, Santander missed time with a low back, Mateo had a hip flexor issue that I cant remember how much (if any ) time he missed but it was when he was still our every day SS.

Again- all this to say- I dont have any numbers to say that we have or have not had a lot of injuries but I do think that we've had to overcome some pretty significant issues throughout the year. It seems far more than last year. Our depth has been amazing and has been our strength and should continue to be our strength moving forward.

  7. my guess for today:

    C Adley
    DH Gunnar
    LF Hays
    RF OHearn
    1B Mountcastle
    CF Mullins
    3B Westburg
    2B Frazier
    SS Mateo

and if Mounty isnt ready - O'Hearn at 1B and Cowser in RF (batting 9th). If Cowser doesnt play today its going to be slim pickins for him this week. Looks like The Angels will have 3 lefties and we're also lined up to face Sale in Boston.

WAR doesn’t go up by runs.  Well. It sort of does, because runs convert to wins.

Yes- it was a mistype on my part.  1 WIN.. it was also meant to be an exaggeration but he was phenomenal last night.

That whole game was a defensive masterclass by Gunnar. In addition to the catch and throw double play, he had a tough short hop off a liner and a tough backhander on a bouncer, as well as a GIDP he turned himself. The fly ball double play was special though. Maybe he learns that he is better off when he takes a second to plant before he throws.

His WAR shouldve gone up about a run from his defense last night alone.

Westburg has been on the team for 57 games.   Frazier has started 33 games since them.  That certainly suggests he’s sitting against RHP sometimes.   Frazier made 24 starts in May, 19 in June, 17 in July, 13 in August.

Yes he did sit against a righty or two. He also had his thumb issue and another issue of being banged up which I cant remember which caused him to miss several, not getting "benched" - those 33 games are an indication of those injuries as well, not just Westburg taking his playing time. Since he came back from his thumb he has started every game vs righties. My original statement was that the indication is that he will start pretty much every day (certainly there may be one or two sprinkled in) vs righties.

The Frazier issue is very easy to solve.

There is no indication that Frazier will not play pretty much every day against righties. Just like there was a strong indication that this would be the reality when we signed him for 8 million. They didnt bring him in to be a part time guy, just like they didnt bring Gibson in not to be in the rotation.

I think the O’s know Showalter has a lot of talent and potential.  They gave him $400 k which is 5th round money, and he’s come along nicely and was having a good year at Delmarva at age 19.   But sometimes you give up a guy like that, who’s 3-4 years away from the majors, to help get a guy you need now.  You don’t know if they’ll turn out to be Josh Hader or Toby Myers, two other highly regarded young pitchers we traded away in deadline deals. Hader ($40 k bonus, 19th round), who was having a nice year at Delmarva at 19, required TJ surgery after being traded but turned into a multi-year all star.  Myers ($225 k bonus, 6th round) was pitching well at Aberdeen (then a short-season A team) at 18 after being drafted at 17.  I remember that when @Tony-OHdid his post-2013 top 30 list, he was asked where he would have put Hader if he was still in our organization, and he said around 10th.  And I remember Tony being disappointed that we traded Myers.  In both cases, they were guys seen as having a high upside, but far from certain to reach the majors, and in any event being far away time-wise.

Not really related, but reading the post above took me down a few minute rabbit hole of looking up some of our trades and prospects from 2012-2017. I had forgot about Tobias Myers, even though I remember people being upset we traded him so young. He obviously did not workout for Tampa but interestingly - Tampa traded him to Cleveland in 2021 for Junior Caminero who is now rated as the #6 prospect in all of baseball and the #2 SS behind Jackson Holiday. Tampa's ability to target prospects and develop them is pretty remarkable.

    Sorry for the tangent.

I understand the Gunnar plan and agree. Might you make the same argument for Adley. A real day off, not DHing, would seem to be in order for him, IMHO. If Santander is healthy, DH him, sit Gunnar and Adley. Go with Urias at 3rd, Mateo at SS and Westburg at 2B. Mountcastle at 1B. OF of McKenna, Mullins and Hayes. McCann would be catching a day game after a night game in that scenario, however.

Gunnar had an off day not too long ago. Adley has been DH'ing nearly every game vs lefties recently. I think they are probably decently rested. Plus off day tomorrow. I dont see the need to rest either of them. Adley will most likely catch today given the night game last night which means McCann could DH. Could also see them DH'ing Gunnar to keep Mateo in there. But I bet they would like to keep McCann's hot bat in there right now especially vs LHP. I could see something like this:

    C- Adley

    1B- Mounty

    SS- Gunnar

    LF- Hays

    DH- McCann

    CF- Mullins

    2B- Westburg

    3B- Urias

    RF- McKenna

We also have Kikuchi after the off day (another lefty), so that will likely be another McCann C and Adley DH game. He's had a lot of time off catching over the last month and its worked out well because McCann has been a beast at the plate and behind the plate.

Just remember we have NO chance in the playoffs against good pitchers.   Just read this game thread.

I mean... we were shutout for a complete 9 inning game with 3 hits, all singles and all in different innings. We had one guy reach scoring position the entire game. I'm not saying I agree with the people that said we have no shot against elite playoff pitching because we have roughed up some aces this year. But tonight, any run from the opposition and we lose. Thankfully our pitching was fantastic as well! We stole one and now can steal the series!
