  1. Very true. I had mono when I was 15 and felt like I was going to die. It hits you like a ton of bricks. Even if Adley’s case was mild, I’m sure it was still bad enough to sap him of a lot of energy and resulted in weight loss. That is the likely explanation for why he looks skinnier than he did this year in college, as Luke alluded to. He probably couldn’t work out for at least a week or two while dealing with mono, so that put him behind and he’s probably still getting his strength back. Even so, those swings look good in the 2080 video that Luke linked, so I have no doubt that Adley is going to come back even stronger next year and show us all that the results we are seeing right now are not an accurate reflection of the hitter he really is.
  2. I’m not worried about Adley. The guy has hit everywhere he’s been the last 2 years, both at Oregon State and for Team USA. Every player transitions differently into pro ball, and Adley has more on his plate than your typical draft pick. Let’s not discount the fact that he had a bout of mononucleosis after getting drafted, which I’m sure sapped a lot of his energy, so he’s probably still working his way back to full strength while simultaneously learning a pitching staff and adjusting to pro pitching. Adley didn’t just suddenly forget how to hit. I have a feeling we’ll see the real Adley next year once he has a full offseason to rest, get back to full strength and prepare for the rigors of full season baseball.

The Cardinals found guys like this in the draft a lot when Mike & Sig were there. They would scrape stats from all levels of college baseball, go scout the players based off the stats, and then draft some guys that fit their STOUT model that they created. Guys like Matt Adams, Trevor Rosenthal & Jaime Garcia come to mind in particular. All 3 were taken after the 20th round and went on to become productive major leaguers.
  4. I assume that Elias felt the quality of the prospects the O’s were getting in the deal made it worth agreeing to pay half of Cashner’a remaining salary for this year and his signing bonus. Otherwise, why make the deal? Don’t judge the trade based on how far away these prospects are from the majors or what they signed for last J2. If Elias & Koby like these players, I’m willing to trust them on this and see how it plays out. If anything, it’s clear the O’s just wanted to get rid of Cashner as quickly as they could, and there were only 2 teams showing legit interest. Elias probably felt it was too risky to wait another couple weeks to hopefully increase his value further, when the opposite could happen and Cashner has been pitching great the last 2 months. Trade him while he’s hot.
  5. Plenty of international players that got paid on the cheap have gone on to have successful major league careers. A current example is Ronald Acuna Jr., who signed for $100k with the Braves. I think Luis Severino signed with the Yankees for like $70k. Just because these guys weren’t highly thought of at the time they signed doesn’t mean they can’t develop into very good players, as they have. We see plenty of players get big bonuses and bust (both domestic & international). That’s why none of us can say for sure that this was a bad trade, because we can’t judge these guys based on what dollar amount they signed for. I trust Mike Elias & Koby Perez on this one. Do you think the White Sox regret trading Fernando Tatis Jr. in the deal for James Shields back in 2016? At the time, Tatis Jr. wasn’t considered a stud prospect and was far away from the big leagues (and he was only 17), which is why the White Sox were willing to give him up and take on a past-his-prime Shields and his big salary. But look what happened once Tatis got to San Diego? He developed into a stud, and now the White Sox look pretty bad for making that trade, especially considering they were a fringe contender that year to begin with and Shields wasn’t going to suddenly turn back into the ace he was 3-4 years before that. Cashner is probably at the same level now that Shields was at that time (maybe even slightly better), only with a much more manageable salary and a pending FA versus a long term albatross of a contract that Shields had.
  6. Are both of these guys original 2019-2020 signings by the O’s, or was Sanchez signed after being released by another organization?
  7. This is awesome! Thanks for doing this SoxHotCorner14! Can’t wait to see the rest of this scout’s answers. What are the chances that Elias tries to poach this guy from Houston to be our scouting director?
  8. I would think so, unless one of the high school guys decides they want to play badly enough and are willing to accept less than they might receive in 3 years with some college development.
  9. Thanks. The Araujo trade was made before 7/2/19, so the bonus slot would have had to be for the 2018-2019 signing period.
  10. I’m still confused. When did we trade an international bonus slot to the Cubs? If you are talking about the Zoellner trade, that was with the Phillies, and it was for a bonus slot during the 2018-2019 signing period. Please explain, because I don’t understand where this claim originated from. Thanks.
  11. Did I miss something? When did we trade an international slot to the Cubs? And what did we get in return if we did trade it?
  12. Mods, if you want to put this in a different section, feel free, but I thought we should start a thread devoted to the Orioles international signings for the 2019-2020 signing period. This is so foreign to O’s fans, since the organization has never really been a player in the international market until now. But we should have a place to discuss and analyze all of our international signings, just as we do for amateur draft picks. Now we just have to wait until tomorrow for the signings to start being announced and then we can get this party started. Can’t wait for the names and details to start trickling in! (Edited by moderators) Signings so far: Luis Ortiz, lhp, Dominican Republic, $400,000 Anderson Rogers, ss, Dominican Republic (video) Luis Gonzalez, of, Dominican Republic, $450,000 Charbel Abboud, rhp, Venezuela Kenny Baez, c, Dominican Republic Harold Arias, rhp, Venezuela Roberto Martinez, ss, Dominican Republic, $200,000 Luis de la Cruz, of, Dominican Republic Eric Cains, rhp, Dominican Republic
  13. His Twitter account says he’s in the Baltimore Orioles organization, but I have seen no confirmation of his signing yet, or his name listed on any minor league affiliate rosters. I wonder what the deal is with him. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.
  14. Callis said he signed for $250k. I’m glad they got this one done. Now just waiting to see what Houston Roth got paid, and if Dan Hammer ended up signing or not.
  15. Looks like we could afford to give any player between rounds 11-40 up to $470k if we want to with the $345k in slot savings we have, on top of the $125k we can give to any player in those rounds. We don’t know what Daschbach’s number is, but I would assume it’s less than $470k. Whatever the case, I hope we can sign 2 players with the remaining funds we have, ideally Daschbach and one of the high school arms. Hammer would be nice to sign as well, but I’m guessing it’s unlikely we can sign 3 players unless one of them is willing to accept $125k.
  16. How many of the players that we drafted this year were part of the regional workouts that the O’s hosted before the draft, and who are they specifically? Did Elias bring this practice with him from Houston? With less data available on high school players than college players, does this mean that we relied exclusively on our scouts for picks like Gunnar Henderson & Darell Hernaiz, or did they also factor in stats & Trackman data when putting a value on them? How heavily does Elias value/weigh a player’s makeup, and how is makeup quantified in his & Sig’s scouting/draft models?
  17. If he was worth $1M, a team would have drafted him high enough to warrant paying him that much. Unless Daschbach thinks he can get that as a senior sign, which I seriously doubt, I don’t know why he wouldn’t just sign in the 11th round for overslot, but still nowhere close to $1M. If he thinks he’s worth that or can get it next year, his agent is giving him bad info. There’s clearly a reason why he fell to the 11th round, and it’s probably due to his bonus demands more than anything else, because he’s a legit power threat for a PAC-12 school. Hopefully Stowers and Handley put some pressure on him to sign and we get it done for around $200k or so.
  18. It doesn’t work that way. If Watson doesn’t sign, we lose his bonus slot altogether and get a compensatory pick in next year’s draft instead (I believe it would be the 2nd pick of the 3rd round). We can’t just use his entire bonus slot to sign the late round high school guys. Only whatever savings is left over from other under slot signings.
  19. I assume you have a source with the club that is telling you this? You keep posting that players have signed without citing a source.
  20. Where did you see this? Can you please cite a source or include a link from now on, just so we don’t have to ask? Thanks!
  21. It’s Akin, not Akins. This is a pet peeve of mine, so nothing against you personally. It’s like the constant misspelling of Wieters that went on here for years. Everyone knows who you mean, but let’s get the spelling right.
  22. Awesome, thanks! This is very helpful!
  23. Thanks, but where did you find them? MiLB.com or another website?
