  1. Are we seriously still suggesting that this team needs a 36 year old DH? Does that really seem like a move the modern regime would make? Stop thinking like an Angelos! And Ken Weinman's about as "plugged in" to what the Orioles need as a broken battery operated toaster.

Long history of Cleveland giving up on guys when they appeared on the downside and it turned out they were right.   Cleveland knows pitching.

You absolutely nailed it. As soon as I saw Clase's name leaked as "maybe" being available that's immediately where my mind went. It's almost like MLB GMs need a CarFax equivalent for Cleveland pitchers.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I think Ramirez would be a great fit here.

You do? With Henderson, Holliday and Westburg plugged in at 3B, SS, and 2B for the foreseeable future how and where exactly do you see Jose Ramirez fitting in with this team position wise? He's also 31 and his numbers have been on a steady decline for the last two seasons. I also find it interesting that in a year where just about everyone saw a spike in their SBs  due to the new rule changes Ramirez did not. It makes me think that not only is his bat slowing down, but his legs as well. Dont get me wrong I love Ramirez's fire and passion, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around why this team would want to trade for an aging third baseman who's skills are obviously declining.

He’s only a bench player here because we are stacked.

He's bench player because he only hit 4 HRs in 360 ABs last season. And he doesn't steal bases either. So no power and no speed. I don't care how good he is defensively a player who's that terrible with the bat is never going to be intentionally given regular ABs.

I may be in the minority but I think Urias is worth more than a reliever with 1 year of control. 3 years of control, A GG on his resume. His offensive number seemed to be much better for some reason in 2022 but looking he’s only about 15 points off between those 2 years. And he can play multiple positions in the infield. Plus about 6 war over 2 seasons

I don't think he is. Scott was a top ten reliever in all of baseball last season. And Urias did nothing in 2023 to suggest that he'll ever be able to duplicate his 2022 offensive numbers again. He's just a bench bat and would only get significant play on a VERY bad team.

Fangraphs published a in depth analysis on Clase a few weeks ago. Apparently he also had trouble adjusting the pitch clock last season so maybe part of his struggles can be attributed to that as well. Either way I think he's way too expensive and we don't need to overpay for another closer with Kimbrel filling in this season and Bautista taking over the reigns again next season. We just need to pay for saves, we just need another solid RP (ideally).

Whoops. That should have read we *don't* need to to pay for saves...

FYI, I don't think this website officially belongs to the team just looking at it real quick. I would be careful in making sure the merchandise is officially licensed since it's still not exactly cheap.

Oomf. That's my mistake. Appreciate the heads up and Mods please delete my original post (since I can't edit it).

Miami still makes some sense to trade with and they have a piece that would make a lot of sense for us in old buddy Tanner Scott.

Scott is, of course, good now after years of frustrating starts and stops as an Oriole. He's like DL Hall in almost every way except that there were no allusions of Scott being a SP. It would be pretty funny to trade for him back, but past history aside he fills the DL Hall hole perfectly.

    He was worth 3.6 (!) rWAR last year. 2.31 ERA, 0.987 WHIP (!), threw 78 (!) innings and had 12 K/9. Sheesh. That's a horse right there.

We have a lot of things Miami could use, like infielders and outfielders. But it's tough to figure out what Scott is worth exactly, for one year.

Personally, I think Norby straight up is more than fair considering the years of control. Maybe Norby plus a pitcher from last year's draft. Miami probably prefers a SS, but Mateo is hardly enticing I'm sure. Unless they really like Stowers and you could do a Stowers + Mateo + low-A pitcher, but it seems unlikely. Thoughts?

Love the idea, but I honestly have no idea what the Marlins are trying to do right now. They currently have eight legitimate candidates for their starting rotation and nine if you count AJ Puk who "wants to start". And they really don't have a legitimate MLB caliber SS currently on their roster. In hindsight Ortiz would have probably made the most sense for them, but I'm even then I just don't think they have the bullpen depth to part with Scott. What they need to do is trade one of those starting pitchers!

  10. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to post this here (Mods, please move if I'm in the wrong), but I wanted to point out that there are curently DEEP discounts on merch at the Orioles Team Store. If you've been on the fence about pulling the trigger on a jersey now would probably be the time to do it.

    https://www.oriolesteamstore.com/

On a related note is anyone familar with the sizing of the Replica jerseys? The website lists a XL as being a 52 inch chest/52 inch waist, but other websites are saying an XL is a 46-49 inch chest/40-42 inch waist. I'm trying to get some clarity so I can avoid the hassle of having to do an exchange. Thanks and happy shopping!

O'Hearn could be traded or flat out released with us only having to pick up 20% of his salary.  He's not a stumbling block if we want to sign JD Martinez.

Those ABs need to (and should go to) Kjersted and Cowser.

Because it’s what we do here. 😁

It's just silly though. Coming up with suggestions and trade ideas is fine, but at least look at from more than a cave man's perspective (i.e., "good player, must sign").

With Hall gone I could see them giving a minor league contract to one of those lefty relievers who have had moments of goodness in their career-- Amir Garrett, Brad Hand, Daniel Norris. Just to see if they can figure something out with them, and in case something goes wrong with Perez/Coulombe.

Garrett's a complete head case and I don't think he's a good enough pitcher to put up with his shenanagins. Hand seems washed and Norris just seems bad. I agree we could use another bullpen arm, but I really don't want to sign a guy just for the sake of signing someone. Hopefully someone emerges in camp or they can pull off a small trade.

Martinez wouldn’t be a bad signing under most circumstances but the Os have too many guys that his signing would impact and I think those guys need that time up in the majors now.

Then why are we collectively still even talking about it? Everyone's certainly entitled to their own opinion, but a pet peeve of mine is when folks completely ignore whether or not a player would "actually" be a good fit for our team. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that there's no room for another DH only player on this team. I also stand by my comment that Martinez is only marginal better than Santander. And when you factor in that one of them can actually play the field and other can't that probably bridges the gap between the two. Now if we were to trade Santander for a RP and sign Martinez as a repalcement that would be COMPLETELY different scenario. But as the roster is currently contructed Martinez makes zero sense for this team. ZERO.

There has been some talk about him not being a great clubhouse guy in Boston compared to Turner.

I dunno. I like Mounty and Santander. O's fans don't really know how good they have it with those two guys, IMO.

I'm geuinely curious how much better folks think that JD Martinez can be (at age 36) than Santander. Keep in mind OBP isn't really a part of his game anymore so he's basically a HRs / RBIs only guy. I honestly don't see much difference between the two players.

Have you seen his numbers?   He's a better bat than any of our OF/DHs... you make room for him.

I have. I've also seen his his OBP which was the worst it's been in years. I'm also not naive enough to think that signing a DH only 36 year old player coming off a bounce back year is a good move. At his age even duplicating last season's production is a long shot. JD Martinez hits HRs and drives in runs. That's basically it. Anythony Santander does the the exact same thing, but can actually play in the field (1B/RF). And we need that DH slot to rotate in players like Cowser and Kjerstad who absolutely need to play at the MLB level this season. Signing JD Martinez is the type of move the old regime would have made. It's certainly not one Elias would or should make.
