Hint: He's 29 and has a .641 career OPS in over 1200 plate appearances spanning five seasons. Good chance it'll be around .641.
For sure. I just don’t want to see him completely fall off a cliff like he did last year. I’m kinda hoping he can be a .690-.700 guy for a year or 2. I don’t expect it, but keeping my fingers crossed.

Was it ever confirmed that he had a tear? I only ever saw that there was an injury but don’t recall seeing the word tear ever used. If so, I missed it.
My bad. I meant to write 'sprain'. I'll fix that.

Last year through May 8th (the day he entered his slump) Mateo was OPSing .901. We are now two weeks past May 8th this year.
Through May 8th 2204 he was OPSing .758 (propped up by two early May HR) & since he’s OPSing .645.
This will be interesting to monitor and see how he trends over the next month.

I was not expecting him to be so good after the news broke that he had a UCL spain. He’s been remarkable.

Don’t give up any runs.

Name the crappy SP that we have faced this year?
This. The Orioles aren’t sneaking up on anyone’s. We are getting the best of the best and beating us is a notch in other teams belts. We have had very good pitching down at us without even a small break all year. Welcome to the new normal.

Cesar Prieto is having a hell of a year. 7 HR 10 2b
.340 / .377 / .556 slash line.

YouTube transcript of Eno on today's episode, as they were talking about Jordan Westburg finding another level.

I'll have to give that episode a watch.

One of those things that helps bat speed. Especially the underweight bats.
It’s not just bat speed. Its the acquisition of the motor skills and building of myelin sheathing in the brain. The different bats, bats with weight in different locations, bats at different lengths (short bat long bat), bats with smaller (skinny) barrels all makes each rep difficult and causes the batter to focus to an extreme level to achieve success. The body self organizes depending on the batting implement and in doing so make the batter better at that particular skill. Anything you can do to make the reps more challenging makes the batter better. Throwing from different locations in cage…..set up L screen 10’ off center to left then 10’ off center to right. Set up two pitching machines with one set as a curve and one set as a FB and don’t let the batter know what’s coming. Anything to make the rep challenging and different from the previous rep.

I thought he was hit by a pitch though.
Yes. Broken nose in August last year ended his season.

Stowers seems much more athletic this year. Was he hurt last year? He seemed like he was running in quicksand.
I think he was pretty banged up even when he was playing last year. He missed a good bit of time as well.

Are we allowed to get excited about Mateo? Would be so great to see him have sustained success.

OH curse hit Stowd tonight. .2 IP 2 HR 3 BB 5 ER.
-
Another dinger tonight and OPS up to .848. He will get one more PA but no Ks & 1 BB through his first 4 PAs. He’s officially got my attention.
-
2 for 4 with a dinger. The OPS is sneaking up.

Mike Elias would be my first priority.

There are trade-offs. Gunnar has batted with 91 runners on base in 202 PA. The average hitter in 202 PA would see 121 runners on base. So even if Gunnar would have 15-20 fewer PA right now if he was batting 4th, he’d probably have had 20ish more runners on base. Santander, for example, has had 115 runners on base in 180 PA. At the same time, Gunnar would have been on base fewer times and scored fewer runs, etc.
Good points.

Well said he only bats lead off once. The lead off Home Runs are partially a product of him batting with nobody on base( pitchers more inclined to challenge) If they adjust the OBP will go up and so will the steals. As far as a fifth AB who else would you want up, plus whoever is PH for our # 8 or 9 has Gunner in front of them.
Correct on the last part. I almost mentioned that. Apart from having the bench bats replace lower lineup guys, the lead-off hitter also has the best chance of seeing the SP a third time through the line up.

Your best POWER hitter should get the most at bats with men on base. Gunnar is third on the team in OB%, but far and away the leader in SLG%. Heck, right now he has the highest SLG% in the AL. Yet he has the fewest ABs with men on base of any of our regulars. Batting him leadoff gives Gunnar more opportunities to hit HRs and score runs, but fewer opportunities to drive in runs. 75% of Henderson's HRs have been hit with the base empty. Compare that to Ohtani (62%), Tucker (60%), Ozuna (57%), Naylor (50%), or Judge (46%).

Gunnar isn't a leadoff hitter - he's a prototypical #3 hitter or cleanup hitter. Hyde writes poor lineups, and Gunnar hitting leadoff has been one of the consistent problems with the offense this season. Gunnar hitting mostly solo shots is both a consequence and reflection of this offense's flaws - the O's have too many low-OBP hitters in the lineup (hitting in less-than-optimal spots for the most part) and are too reliant on solo homers to generate runs.
At least Hyde has started hitting Westburg leadoff against LHP, which is progress, but Hyde is way too stubborn and too slow to make the correct adjustments. He's very similar to Buck Showalter in that respect.
Anyway, I look forward to Hyde waking up and moving Gunnar down to #3/#4 against RHP.
Gunnar has already had 19 more PA than the #2 most (Adley), 22 more PA than the #3 most (Santander), 27 more PA than #4 (Westburg), and 29 more PA than #5 (Mountcastle). That is just over 1/4 of the season. Batting him 4th means that he will very often get only 4 PA per game instead of 5, and that 5th PA will take place at a critical time in the 9th inning. He hits a HR every 12.6 PAs (this year & every 19.9 PA career) so batting him second is coughing up 1-2 HR so far this season, 3rd or 4th is -3HR....and that's in just a little over 1/4 of the season. So, by moving him to 3rd or 4th you're taking away ~10HR over the course of a full season. Instead of putting him lower in the line-up, I'd like to see a higher OBP guy in front of him in the 9 spot. Gunnar has the tools to be a tremendous lead-off hitter.

NOW you take Perez out? AFTER his mental breakdown? Does he not do the pitcher and catcher drills.
That a tough one. It’s not a ground ball. Super weak blooper and his first instinct was that he had a chance to catch it. My question is what was Mountcastle doing? That didn’t look remotely close to 1B, almost directly to Mateo. I think that play is a hit 99/100 but only chance is Mountcastle holding 1B and a quick throw from Mateo. I don’t think Perez would have been able to nearby runner to the bag even if he went right away it would have been really tough.
