I agree that we’re gonna have to go in on FA SP. And it’s foolish to project that you’re gonna have excess at a position that you can just trade from it. But when is the right time to go in on SP?

I think they need to identify Pitchers that would be willing to take a 1 year deal and sign them above value.  They need to find a way to keep offensive player's salary to a minimum and pay out the wazoo for SP.  Identify a mercenary that is willing to bet on himself with 1 year deals and pay 10-20% above market value.

Slavishly following a certain model isn't going to work as teams and situations evolve.  You can't simply do what the A's did, or what the Astros did or what the Rays do.

Folks that have just been saying that the O's can trade off excess position players to get front line pitchers aren't being realistic.  The Astros took advantage of a certain set of opportunities that are not the norm.  They were also to a degree forced into the "Astro way" as their top of the draft pitching selections didn't pan out for them.

I think the actual plan was to develop pitching and they were forced to deviate it.

Perhaps.  But you OP points out that 60% of the SP from 2018 Astros were acquired from other teams.  You also pointed out that Astros tried to develop their own pitching and failed, thus separating the strategies employed by the Orioles currently.  So it doesn't seem they are 'slavishly following a certain model'.   What Elias' master plan is we can only guess at and watch play out.

Yeah, unclear why it took six months from when they made the original announcement to finally break ground.   But, I’m glad they’ve finally done that.

Permit issues, supply chain issues, understaffing issues, COVID issues, material availability, material cost volatility, labor availability, "island time" issues, etc.  Like I said in my earlier post, seems like they are right on time.

    That's behind schedule right?

I guess it isn't surprising given the pandemic but still not ideal.

If getting a permit in DR is anything like getting a permit in DC, VA, or MD then I'd say they are right on time.  We heard about this 6 or 7 months ago.  I image that is when all plans were finalized and submitted for permitting/approval.  6 month wait for permit on a large commercial complex in DR seems about right.  When I first saw the announcement I assumed it would be a three year project.  Looks like it will end up being a 1.5 -2 years to completion.  I'm pleasantly surprised.

Wander Franco would have been worth 6.86 rWar with same number of plate appearances of Randy Rice-a-Rena?

    Damn, that's a helluva season.

(Just in case there are any Sox or Yanks fans reading, Arroz is rice in Spanish.)

    Jose Mesa - Joe Table

    Pedro Feliz - Pete Happy

    Jorge Posada - George Past

La posada is a festival. It Doesn’t mean past.

    Arozarena = Sandy rice

There used to be a poster on here with an avatar of a Tejada jersey number 10 but had “roof” in place of tejada.  Made me laugh.

  6. Kids no longer have any interest in baseball.  I live in the Bethesda area and the local league has 4 select teams for the 10u age group, that down from 10+ just a few years ago.  I don't think there are any 9u select teams this year.  My son is the ONLY kid in his entire grade (4th) that plays baseball.  For years, decades even, the owners have been killing the sport in an attempt to line their pockets as much as possible.   The playoffs this year are yet another example.  Why in the world do the games start at 8pm? (rhetorical questions - I know exactly why).  Television coverage of baseball has become so boring that even myself, a life long baseball fan, has trouble making it through games.  The game is slow and boring for the casual & new fan.  There are 162 mostly meaningless games throughout the season and the first game of importance, postseason pressure, exciting plays, etc. was aired after all children went to sleep.  At what point will baseball market their stars and make sure they are put in front of young eyes?  It is painful watching baseball commit suicide.  MLB is so far behind the marketing/branding curve, that I don't think they will ever catch up.  In fact I think we will see the game slowly die out during our life times.

  7. 480 then you have to get it through the wind.  Wind comes into the stadium and swirls as it hits the warehouse.  It’s like surfing next to a jetty.  The warehouse asks like a jetty and picks up wind swell from all directions and bumps wind back towards the field.  It would take a monster blast, dead summer (for highest humidity & fewer oxygen molecules) and absolutely zero wind for a ball to even have a fighting chance.  IE. Day of homerun derby conditions and the leagues most elite left handed power hitter.

No, just to make sure he can get to balls.  I'm not worried about fielding errors, I just hope that he's got the range to be able to get to balls so he can stick at SS.  Throwing errors can be fixed.

    Keith Olbermann’s mom might disagree.

  9. He's a big boy and has a thick lower half.  He drops and drives and looks like he has a tough time getting over top his lower half and falls off the the left side.  Looks like a compact and efficient motion nonetheless, just might be a body type thing.  One thing I'd be nervous about is telegraphing his pitches.  Looks like he might have a tendency to tip pitches to advanced hitters.

  10. He looks like a man amongst boys down there, just in the way he carries himself.   Game moves slower for him.  I was super impressed when he kicked it into high gear on Friday to turn a single into a double.  Shows immense baseball IQ and a pretty darn strong run tool.

  11. Took second base in LFers face for a double (laser off 3b glove).   Advances to third on ball in dirt that got away from C.  He has a thick lower half, very muscular.  Pretty quick and athletic for a big dude.  He can move.

  12. Just got my first eyes on Adley.  ABs are so professional.  Fouled off half dozen pitches and gets sac fly.  Cool as a cucumber. First defender out on field.  Met knew pitcher on mound before inning. I’m impressed

This is my first look at an exact HIGH SCHOOL using B-Ref's always awesome tools.   I see they had three of the Top 50 guys in 2019's draft, who I guess would have been seniors when Green was a freshman (if he's been there since 9th grade), and this past year I guess he played alongside James Wood that the Padres put $2.6M on.

That's a crazy tool, for sure!  And those are a lot of draft picks in the last 15 years.

I hope Grayson starts 30 games next year and about 25 of them are in the Show, but it isn't inconceivable with a ball adjustment snag or an injury, he ends 2022 under 50 MLB innings.    Kjerstad 2022 will be like Mancini 2021 - playing at all will be its own success.

A next offseason list still with both high school pitchers, Kjerstad returned, Cowser developed and Green backfilling Rutschman I suppose isn't impossible.

I hear ya.  I prefaced the Kjerstad statement with an 'if', it's a huge question mark, but a lottery ticket that will be fun to watch play out.   I'm hoping for best case scenario that he's fully healthy and productive so it'll be like adding another first rounder to the system.  I'm assuming GRod is up next season killing his prospect status.   But with a productive Kjerstad,  1.1 coming in, Latin influence, and players from last two years drafts having success it seems the system could be in better shape next year than it is this year.   (this is a pipe dream scenario - the orioles give me nothing else to work with)

We still have to outkick Arizona, etc., but I do grant a silver lining in the Adley year was the entertainment value of navel gazing on everyone and not having to worry if the Tigers would take Torkelson, Martin, etc.    Though I suppose once Kjerstad became targeted Elias really didn't have to sweat that one out.

But if we get there, I am curious to learn more about IMG Academy.  I do like the simple truth in labeling in the institution's name.

Will Elijah Green's 12th grade year be something like any top NCAA quarterback's redshirt senior year?  He's met his course requirements and is taking Ballroom Dancing this academic year, and that's it, and all that good stuff.    Plenty of time to practice that there pitch discernment, swing decisions, etc.    He should at least peruse Cowser's quotes, emulate some of his practices, etc. if he wants to be 1-1!

A colleague of mine's son is moving down to FL so his son can do his senior year at IMG.  If you have the means and the talent, it's probably the best "high school" to use as a platform to show off your skills.  Kids from all over the country move to Bradenton, Fl to play all the various sports they offer.  We run into them in Basketball every year.  While our team is a perennial top 10 in the nation team, IMG is is a class above.  Same in all sports.  Not really a high school, it's a sports academy where talented kids go to learn how to become professionals at an early age.

Agree completely. If Hall comes out heathy and firing, the one guy makes the whole system seem deeper and more dangerous.

If Kjerstad comes back healthy and makes a major impact, it will dramatically impact/improve the system.  It'll be like adding two 1st Round draft picks to next years mid-year prospect rankings.

Really nice to see Henderson crush a PULL homer.

I was thinking the same thing.  Before watching video I was thinking it was going out to LF.  Crushed that ball.  Pretty swing.  Wonder if he got a little homer happy after that ball through off his swing a bit.
