If the O's are going to spend it should be on pitching, pitching, pitching.
Eh, I think it should be on talent. Whether it is offense or pitching, spend the money on talented players. Correa qualifies.

I would be ecstatic to see a bold move like this. Next years FA SS class isn’t great and all the infielders coming up through the system could be delegated to 2B and 3B, creating more competition. Obviously 2022 would still be a bad year, but the guys would come into an environment where winning is the actual goal and I can’t think of any reason why that wouldn’t be a positive influence.
I have absolutely no expectations this could actually happen btw. This is the exact approach I support though. Imagine Rutschman, Correa, and Mullins up the middle and hitting 1, 2, 3 with Mountcastle in cleanup. It’d be awesome. That doesn’t fix the pitching…but at least the offense and defense would be fun.
It's like the Padres signing Machado just as their window was opening. It makes sense, but is not something I expect the risk averse (risk terrified) Orioles to do.

Oh, I'm not lol. But it beats talking about how awful Manfred is and how depressing the state of baseball is right now.

Yea I saw this and came here to post it.
FTR, I am not for a 10/350 deal however, I would rather give that to him than pay 3-4 players 35M. Rather pay elite guys than mediocre guys.
I would still look to move Mancini, Mullins and Santander if you did this. You still need that pipeline of cheap talent.
Agreed on all of this. All about bringing in as much talent as possible. If you can also bring in more talent by trading Mancini/Mullins/Santander, it still aligns with a potential winning window if CC is here for ten years and you have Adley, Grayson, etc.

I'd love Correa in Baltimore. A shortstop of his caliber would be a great addition to this team.
Agreed. Don't love the cheater backstory, but at his age and talent, I'd happily take him as our SS for the next 10 years.

Still probably not, but some interesting chatter in the last hour about him and the Orioles.
Hurting the credibility is that Dan Clark Sports retweeted it.

To me, it's as simple as you have Mancini for one more non-competitive year, or you can get potential guys who may play some, albeit small, role on the team who would be under team control for a while. We aren't winning this year, and there is no benefit whatsoever to Mancini being on the team. Three guys with six years of control who could turn into something >>> one meaningless year of Mancini.

Buck being a manager is good for the game in my opinion. I'll be rooting for him in a roundabout way.
Agreed. It was definitely time for him to go in Baltimore after 2018, but he and Davey Johnson were easily the two best managers they have had in my lifetime. Created many great gifs too.
-
Glad to see he gets another shot to manage. This will give me reason to root for the Mets this year. Hopefully he doesn't have to manage a Wild Card game in extra innings.

Chris Davis says hello.
Well, definitely not since the Chris Davis incident. And they signed Davis because he was a "fan favorite" and PA loved him. Most of us knew it was idiotic before the ink dried.

He's a 38 year old control pitcher. What if the O's offered 1/15m with a club 15m option for 2023 and that was the best offer he got. Is that a good deal for the O's? Could a rotation of Means, Greinke, Grayson, Lyles and whoever be a game changer for the O's? Would Greinke be the O's Charlie Morton?
Just something to think about.
The problem is, the Orioles would never spend $15M on a player, because they are the Orioles.

The Padres are trying to dump Eric Hosmer and his salary. He’s owed,
2022: 21 million Age 32
2023: 13 million Age 33
2024: 13 million Age 34
2025: 13 million Age 35
Here’s an MLBTR article linking the same trade idea to the Cubs,
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/12/cubs-padres-discussed-eric-hosmer-trade-last-summer.html
The Cubs are on his no trade list. Are we? He’s owed 4/60 going forward.
The Pads were willing to give up a top prospect to get rid of him. Obviously, the first thought that jumps into mind is Hosmer and LH SP Mackenzie Gore for ???
Absolutely. The Orioles should consider anything and everything to make the team better. I highly doubt, however, that Elias has permission from the penny pinchers up top to make this type of move, even though it could potentially bring in a good prospect or two.

And I don’t mean, “I hope he’s traded.” What are your expectations and hopes on the field?
For his career, Santander is a .248/.290/.454 hitter. Last year, he was at .241/.286/.433. In his 37 game season in 2020, he was at .261/.315/.575.
The three projection systems published on BB-ref and Fangraphs to date project as follows:
Marcel: .248/.299/.452
Steamer: .252/.301/.462
ZiPS: .259/.299/.463
All very much in the same ballpark, .751-.763 OPS, a tad above his career .744 mark.
I can’t really argue with those projections in terms of what I expect. And of course, you have to assume there’s a significantly higher than average risk of him missing time with injury. So, if he plays 110+ games with a .751-.763 OPS, I don’t think you can be disappointed with that.
But, on the other hand, if he gets lucky with his health, I think he could do considerably better. I really think he was never 100% or close at any point last year, and that affected his offense and perhaps his defense even more so. I think if he can stay pretty healthy (and I’m not talking about perfection here), it would be reasonable to hope for a .260/.305/.485 type campaign. I don’t see him matching his .314 ISO from his short 2020 campaign, but he’s got enough power to manage a .225 ISO in my opinion.
So, I think the most likely scenario is a .750-.760 type season with a good chunk of missed time, but I’m hoping for a relatively healthy, .790ish campaign. With far improved defense over 2021, when he really seemed slowed by his injuries in the OF.
I hope he can get the OBP up to at least the .330 level, but that might be asking too much. OPS over .800 would be sufficient.

Seems like players can be signed to AAA contracts and invite to camp. I would like to see the O's do that is Chris Ellis. He could be helpful in the rotation in April.
Ellis (29) joined the O's on August 25th and made 6 starts with an ERA of 2.49 and a 1.224 WHIP. Elias did not think he had to include him on the 40 man roster and he began a free agent. So far Elias is right about that.
If Grayson, Bradish and Baumann begin the season at AAA, Ellis could compete with Lowther, Zimmerman, Alex Wells, Tyler Wells and Akin for the three rotation spots behind Means and Lyles. I am not saying he would be able to do what he did in late 2021 but he may be able to help.
Agreed. Not the greatest K Rates, but definitely someone worth keeping around based on the lack of depth and options on the rotation.

great Easily would have have beaten that although he would have had to have given me 3 years before the opt out.
Great contract for the Cubs. But I agree, if he opts out two years from now, then what's the point? We'd want good Stroman when we are competitive consistently.

We already have a SS in Gunnar Henderson. Why overpay for something we already have? We already have a couple of top flight SPs in Hall and Rodriguez. Why overpay for something we already have? We already have a 3B in Mayo. We already have a 2B in Westburg. We will be buyers but this is not the year to do so. Maybe next year but not for the names you suggest. Two years. Be patient and then be thankful for the next great Orioles club that brings home a World Series.
What?
We shouldn't sign good players because we may have prospects that may be good? I am not a fan of that logic. Sorry.

No, no, no, the boys need to start coming up. AR first. And the rest as best for their development with no artificial salary concerns dictating the pace.
But they're not going to be good right away. It will take a few years. This is 2009 of the rebuild.
The Orioles rebuild began in 2008 give or take, right? When they traded Bedard and Tejada? Would've been nice if our "2009" was in 2020.

The only FA contract I would’ve given as Orioles is EdRod 5/80. I’d give Stroman 4/80 or 5/100, but he might get that from a real team.
I agree. And while I would love Correa, I could see him getting something stupid. Like 12 years $375 stupid. Can't do that.

I think some people genuinely expect the next contending team, 1-9, to be all homegrown players. Nice idea in theory, but no realistic.
