I think Martin opened some eyes this weekend. I think I'd like to see him at least split time with Mateo at short and get some time at 2B vs LHP while Urias is down. This guy was fairly highly regarded as a prospect when they got him. He was really overwhelmed in that rule V season and then all the injuries - he may just be a late bloomer. This is the time to find out.

    All good points vab. Agreed.

  2. Mods, please feel free to merge this, but I did not see it anywhere else on the forum.  As someone who, rightfully so, does not believe in Richie Martin's future with this team due to his age and poor showings over the last few years, I was impressed in the albeit small sample size of at bats we saw this weekend.  He seems like he has a new stance geared towards generating more power, and instead of looking like someone who got lucky to poke a homer around the Pesky pole last year, could actually hit 8-12 home runs in a season.  The triple to dead center over Taylor's head was jacked.  While I still do not believe he will be a big part of the future, I'd like to see him get regular bats over the next few weeks, or at least until Urias is healthy.  I know he was also getting a lot of extra base hits at Norfolk, so perhaps this change in approach has been going on all year.

Due to the COVID rules in Canada and some of the Os players not vaccinated, some players will not be able to make the trip.

Akin is likely one.  An interesting one is probably Santander, who I believe was on the list last year.  Does Stowers get the call for the weekend series?

The Os will certainly need some guys up.  Apparently it will be multiple players,

Lots of things I could say right now, but to stay on point - I hope Stowers gets called up too.  Probably a handful of other AAA guys.

Didn't get a chance to watch much of the games over this weekend due to life events so I missed the awesome MASN commercials on who our next opponents are while informing me how "the game is still the game" with the baseball right in front of the umpire's crotch and the stupid kid bouncing up and down on the bed.

I figured they weren't playing today but I was dismayed to see that we've got two random-ass games against the Cubs tomorrow and Wednesday and then two more against the Cubs in July.

I don't know what in the chicken fried f*** MLB is thinking anymore, but interleague play is terrible.  Awful.  It was fun and interesting in the late 90s but the novelty has worn off years ago.  I've got no interest watching my team play the Cubs, and quite frankly I'd rather see us play the Yankees or Sox.  Sure, we'd probably lose but at least we'd get to see how we're stacking up against teams in our division which is the most important thing, IMO.

I like interleague play.  It is fun to see different teams, and ballparks, that you rarely see. Makes me want to watch the games more, not less.

…which of the top guys would you be ok to trade?  Or, in other words, who do you have to keep.

And I know this depends on the return but I think it’s fair to assume that if buy, it’s only going to be for a long term piece.

You and I have agreed on this before, but they should be buyers and sellers.  Make trades that make sense for the team, regardless of whether it is buying or selling.  It's hard to say who I would hold onto versus keep (probably holding onto Adley, Grayson, and those types) but if a team really covets a player and you can get a great return, you do it.  Buy and sell .

The injuries were terrible this weekend. 2B and 3B are a black hole. C is what it is until AR comes up. That’s 1/3 of your lineup. Hays, Mountcastle, Urias, and Mateo, are all a little hurt. Diaz is hurt in AAA.  Not much maneuvering he could do now. The time for maneuvering was this offseason to add a vet or two for AAA. We’re too afraid to cut bait on guys like Grenier, Martin, Bannon, and DJ Stewart.

I don't disagree with your post.  But with respect to AR, there is really no justifiable excuse for him not starting tonight at catcher for the Orioles against the Yankees.

Well, this turned out to be correct.

I take no joy in that.  But it's just the trials and tribulations of rooting for this team for so long.  Knowing the Orioles though, they'll pull us back in by winning 3 of 4 against the Yankees.

You two aren't posting this if we win the series against the Tigers.

I'm sure we'd be treated to more posts about how Mateo is a future piece or something.

He doesn't care about winning in 2022.

Of course it's all about Super 2.

What are you talking about?  Even if they won, the lineup is still terrible.  And even if they won, I would still be annoyed at them potentially (probably) not recalling Adley

Jonathan Schoop has fallen off to a .427 OPS, but OAA thinks he has been one of the best defensive players in all baseball as it so often happens with 30-year-old second basemen.   You can't predict baseball.

Anyhow, heavens protect us from a Year1 push first month like this.   In the offseason of Hinch, Eduardo and Baez, the common Tigers talking point was in 2021 if you threw out April they were over .500 on the year.

Tarik Skubal at least has been in great form, and stylistically as a lefty with fantastic stuff might today represent a DL Hall scenario we'd be mostly happy with in a couple years.

We're running good, they are not...maybe a reverse lock kind of series.    The good Orioles though I feel collectively are as energized as the board about the next few weeks...it is all house money in 2022, can it get even better?

Rodriguez-Pineda-Skubal as good as it gets for them with other guys down.   Rodriguez-Lyles kind of a 2022 IP $$$/WAR faceoff where we look okay so far, Pineda-Zimmermann still feels to me like it favors them on paper, but go Bruuuce, Wells-Skubal includes Wells once again with the 5-days rest coming off a Personal Best kind of game.   What's next?

Hyde in the postgame presser said Odor was down today with a sinus thing, but hoped for him back tomorrow.    Especially if Mountcastle's day to day gets to Day3, It really seems like the position player group might benefit this weekend from the presence of one more good guy from AAA, but I suppose blueprints are blueprints.

Knowing the Orioles and the past 22 years, this is the kind of series we come into confidently, and wind up getting swept in.  Hope I'm wrong.

I know, I know.  You are going to say there he goes again but  ............ Look at the facts.

O's are 7-4 in May,  3 games behind the Blue Jays for the last Wild Card spot.

The O's play  three with the Tigers this weekend who are  2-10 in May.

The Blue Jays are 3-7 in May.  They play the Rays who are  7-4 in May and they are playing in Tampa.

Conclusion:  The O's are 3 back in the Wild Card Race.   O's are playing a weaker team.  Blue  Jays are playing a team that is playing better than them at the moment.   O's have a decent chance to pick up ground this weekend.

O's are surging without Adley, Grayson, DL and Gunnar.   Just think about when those guys are added.

I don't know that we are contenders, but I am definitely having a ball watching and rooting for this team.  As I have said before, I am getting 2012 "Why Not" type vibes for sure.

Random Filler always scares me. Never fails.

Hyde went with Lopez back to back, so if we are lucky enough to get a save opportunity someone else will get a chance, maybe Tate.

Haha, I was thinking this too.  The Orioles have historically been awful against "random filler."
