Part of the difficulty will be .. what do you do with Mountcastle? These scenarios with 1b starts going to Westburg are unlikely imho.. even Urias. Mountcastle and Ohearn will get almost all the 1b starts. And I guess the idea of Adley playing some first has gone away for now. The other problem is with DH and Santander and the Hicks variable. As long as Hicks is hitting he will likely be in lineup, and so Santander and Adley are going to need to take most of DH starts. DH getting crowded. Westburg will likely take 3b with Gunnar playing SS for 15 games and then play 2b for 15 games and Frazier and Urias will split some at second, Mateo will be there when Gunnar needs to play 3b or off. Frazier could also play an occasional COF backup against righthanders or if Hays needs day off.

As has been said elsewhere.. i don’t think MEs decisions are all totally Sigbot analytical .. he uses things like .. yes we paid this guy 8 million so he is going to play quite a bit and uses veteranosity as well with McCann, etc . I think he is much less concerned about delaying specific player promotions to big league club than we are and believes in his minor league developmental staff providing an advantage for success when they get the call. I also think Stowers was a case of him not really impressing ME much and so him going into limbo there.

My understanding from some that know is that most fans would be surprised as to how involved Mike, Sig and their staff are in every day’s lineup construction. And that most successful teams operate that way with the days of Earl tyoe dominion or the Moneyball depiction of managerial dominion being long over. Hyde is certainly part and likely concurs with most decisions. I do not know this with any high degree or personal insider knowledge, just a discussion I heard/read somewhere.

Hyde is only a part of the committee making lineups and he certainly does not have independent authority in this.

Let’s remember.. Adley caught 93 games last year which was by far the most he had ever caught in a season. He caught 54 in college two years, 17 in brief first minor league season in 2019 after signing.. 2020 he had zero , 2021 he caught 82 at Bowie/Norfolk, then last year 93 between Norfolk and here. He has caught at a pace for 123 games at catcher .. how it affects his offense remains to be seen He was used in 29 games at Bowie Norfolk at 1b which appears no longer to be part of the plan

We shall see. The general expectation here seems to be that Westburg will replace Frazier and will be a key contributor immediately in the middle of a playoff race. I have seen rookies have LONG adjustments before .. hopefully he will adjust quickly.
