Look at the stats. 1986 was the start of the decline, he was bad in ‘87.  Somehow hung around to ‘92 but he wasn’t good.

Oops just saw this. I was slightly tongue in cheek, but the dude caught for two decades. He was a tough mother.

In 1987 he was a 33 year old who had been mostly a catcher for 13 years. I’m not sure you can say his decline was really overuse. He was getting old for his position, especially pre-balco era.

A one off game in April doesn’t matter. His performance over the course of the season certainly does.

odd you found it so uninteresting you were compelled to respond.

I’m trying to help you become more interesting! You helped me figure out that we are talking about baseball, so I wanted to do you a favor in return.

    🙂 I’m just joking around.

Yeah.  It’s called baseball. The point is the Orioles are plenty capable of winning games their defacto aces aren’t starting.

Really!? It's called baseball? Thanks for letting me know! :)

They are going to lose more games than they win when the starting pitcher has a sucky night. They can't score ten runs a night. The thread is about discussing Grayson Rodriquez's pitching. Just saying his performance doesn't really matter is incorrect and an uninteresting take.

I believe in Kjesrtad's ability with the bat in his hand. But I don't know if he is a lock to be the heir apparent in RF. That could belong to Mayo.

Mayo hasn't played a single inning in the outfield during his minor league career. The Orioles do some weird stuff in terms of defensive positions, but you think they would play him like one game in the OF if they thought it was his future.

What does righting himself in the minors look like?

But more seriously, we don’t know what they might want him to work on if he gets sent down. I would assume they would have specific things that he needs to improve. Not just “play better” because a few weeks of great hitting stats at Norfolk may not mean much.

    What is the threshold here?

"In Major League Baseball (MLB), a player needs a minimum of 3.1 plate appearances per team game to qualify for the batting average title. This requirement is defined in Rule 10.22(a) of the Official Baseball Rules."

    So about 65 or 66

I think it’s possible he would agree to be optioned, but he has 5 years and 7 days so being optioned for more than 3 weeks would cause him to not hit free agency this offseason. Once he’s optioned he can’t contractually force the Orioles to call him up quicker than those 3 weeks. They could make some sort of handshake agreement on it but it would be putting faith in the Orioles to stick to that.

If he’s confident he’s healthy and as ready as he’s going to be, even if the Orioles are not, he’s better off rejecting an option.

Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.

ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.

Pedantic is an adjective. Your definition has it as a noun.

What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.

Rangers will extend rehab for RHP Jonathan Hernandez

Jul 1, 2022 — Up to three 10-day extensions are permitted for shoulder and elbow surgery patients, but must be approved by MLB and the Players Association.

This is what I think happens to Means if he is not ready for the majors after 2 more starts.

Good point. Plus they could put him on roster, let him throw a bullpen where he complains about tightness or similar, then put him back in IL. If he’s not really healthy then he will end up on IL one way or another.

It was a stupid thing to say even if he believes it, given Brooks’ importance to the only organization Cal ever played for. And, the stats back up that Brooks was superior, at least in terms of the edge he had over his contemporaries.  But I’m not going to demonize Cal for it, even if it was a dumb thing to do.  As you say, he’s entitled to his opinion.

I don’t want to offend anybody and I like Cal Ripken about as much as most Orioles fans, but based on his time as a color commentator I don’t think Cal is particularly smart. He’s certainly less well spoken than I once thought he was.

Gary Carter was the first that came to mind, the Expos and the Mets put an absurd amount of wear and tear on him.

That wear and tear really shortened his career. 😎🤣

It is funny that it is Bench, as a last name. Anyone else? I’m still looking

Realmuto tops out at 139 games. I think Bench and Adley are anomalies. It is not a standard fora Catcher to play 150+ games a season.

Most catchers can’t hit so they are not rotating at DH on a regular basis. The NL only recently got the DH so that wasn’t an option for a lot of the good hitting catchers back in the day. It’s not really an apples to apples comparison in many ways.

Remind me… Was Gunnar ever sent back down once he got up here? If that happened, I don’t remember it. I definitely think that Jackson is here to stay, but I wasn’t expecting his first week to be so anemic.

No, Gunnar was not sent down. And I definitely don’t expect Holliday to be sent down anytime soon. I think they may pick their spots to start him if he continues to struggle this badly, but the negative attention of a demotion would be real challenging.

How long of a leash does Jackson have before he’s sent down for a little reset like they did for Rodriguez last year?

As others mentioned, Gunnar got a pretty long leash. I am sure Hyde and the organization will do what they can to stack the deck in Jackson's favor...he may platoon more with Mateo and go through stretches were he avoids left-handed pitchers and maybe even some of the tough righties.

Is it just because he's Matt Holliday's kid?

He's gotten a ton of hype by posters on Orioleshangout.  Was that just because he's Matt Holliday's kid?
