  1. I think today we’ll see Suarez in long relief after Means.
  2. I have no idea, really. I would point out that in his second to last rehab start, he allowed some very cheap runs on hits that were under 75 mph off the bat. He pitched much better in that game than the box score suggests. And the Reds aren’t exactly Murderers’ Row. So, I’m hoping for a start that gives us a chance to win.
  3. I’m not a fan of the proposed trade, but I did want to point out that Scott’s early struggles with walks this year seem to have calmed down at least a little. He walked 9 in his first 5.2 innings this year, and only 5 in 7.1 since then. That’s still a very high rate, needless to say.

Interesting data points. I’ve always been wary of RF/G because it depends on your pitching staff quite a lot, but that’s not to say it’s completely worthless.
  5. OK, so it’s never happened. FWIW, last year Cano had 20 assists, tied for 10th in MLB. All nine ahead of him threw at least 52 innings more than Cano’s 72. Cano had far more assists per inning than anyone ahead of him on the list. And, he made no errors. I’m not going to press the GG case too hard, but I just wanted to call out his excellence as a defender.
  6. Because honestly, Cano is as good a defensive pitcher as I’ve seen. He induces a lot of grounders and knows he’s got to be ready to field balls, and he does, with catlike quickness and athleticism.
  7. Let’s be clear eyed here. He’s had three consecutive excellent starts. Before that, he had a 6.75 ERA in three starts. I hope his command stays this sharp, but I’m not ready to say he’s the surprise of the season.
  8. It’s still not cool to downvote a guy just because you don’t like his opinion. All he was doing here was asking a question.
  9. I’m just balking at “Zimmermann 2.0.” Povich has way more upside than Zimmermann ever had, and much better stuff. That’s just not a good comp at all. As to where Povich fits, we’ll see. Most teams require 10-12 starters by the time a season is through. We’ve used 7, and today will make 8 when Means starts. It would be great if the team got through the year only using those 8, but don’t count on it. And we’ll see what the O’s do to replace/retain Burnes and Means for 2025, and whether everyone wise stays healthy.
  10. The AL East is 88-73 (.547) against the other divisions. The Central is 47-43 (.522). Take out the White Sox and they’re 43-35 (.551). So the Central has been about equal to the East if you remove that ridiculously horrible team in their division from the equation. Head to head vs. the East, the Centrsl is 19-15, with the White Sox 3-0, having swept Tampa in the only series they’ve played against the East.
  11. No, I don’t think he’s got any fantasies about Cal’s record. Might he play all 162 this year? I’m sure it could happen, but if I were Hyde I’d prefer to give him a day off every month or so once the weather heats up.
  12. He can probably do some back to backs, but not 3 in 4 days. If he goes back to back, he needs at least 2 days off.
  13. It kind of got overshadowed by Irvin’s pitching and O’Hearn’s homer, but Adley’s double to break the scoreless tie was just a very professional Adley at bat. He knew his job was to get a deep enough fly ball to get Mateo home, and that’s exactly what he did. It just happened to land in the right spot for a double, but the run was going to score either way. I have the utmost confidence in Adley in a spot like that.
