Cowser continues to make the most of his chances with two doubles and 4 RBI today. Hopefully we see him start one or both of the next two Fenway games as well.

    He should start all three

It’s universally true that a large subset of fans are always ready to jettison an established player for a shiny new player with good MiL numbers, and will react the minute the established player has a few bad games.   But no MLB GM operates that way.  Real GMs give their established players adequate time to work out if their slumps, don’t assume that the MiL player’s numbers in AAA will translate to the majors, and also look at pesky things like defense and consider the effects on other players in the clubhouse.   That’s just the way it is.  I’ve watched baseball for 58 years and this is an evergreen conversation we’ve had dozens of times around here.  Managers and GMs don’t want their players looking over their shoulder every time they have a bad week or even a bad month.   That’s no way to run a clubhouse.  Slumps are part of the game and you have to give players a fair opportunity to play their way out of them.

That’s not saying they get forever.  But they get a LOT more than 10 games to return to their normal levels.

I think it’s also clear that Elias believes that there are certain things minor league players need to accomplish before they get called up, even if those players might already be better than the players they’ll be replacing.   I have zero doubt that Jackson Holliday is ready to outhit Tony Kemp, and might even be so much better offensively that it would make up for defensive deficiencies.  But Holliday needs to work on his defense and Elias believes that’s best done in the minors right now, not on a stage where every miscue will be under a public microscope and could impact games that are actually meaningful.  So, we’ll wait.

You may see that as a blind spot.  I don’t.

But Hays isn't just 10 games. It's the second half of last season and spring training

  3. On the bright side, I watch every O's game believing we can win. Oh, how many years we couldn't say that. Tonight's game is definitely on the offense. We are just too streaky and they all seem to be on the same streak together. Look at the first two games of the year and the games since. It's like the Rangers series. The bats went silent and they had been silent for several games before then. I know it's not all Hyde's decision, but I believe he had some input on who is at Norfolk and who is on our 26 man. The relief pitching is what it is, considering we are missing three of our pitchers: Bautisita, Means and Bradish. We just gotta hold it together till we get two of those back and move Wells and Irvin to the pen.

  4. At what point does a small sample size become more than that? When does it become a regression or progression? When does it become a pattern? When can you really trust the stats for future performance?

  5. On the steal that was called out and then reversed when Urias dropped the ball, what am I missing? Did he not hold the ball long enough? How did that get reversed? I could see if it had been called safe on the field.

  6. This is a good game to be canceled. The bats are cold. We will be (should be) a better team when we make up this game later in the year. Just don't start Burnes and then lose him after the games gets called after one inning.

  7. Maybe we will be hitting so many HR's this season that they won't feel special. Kinda like Barry Sanders scoring a TD and giving the ball to the ref. No need to celebrate. This is what I do. I do it all the time.
