  1. 4-4 today with the Orioles' only extra base hit the whole game. Now batting .378 / .477 / .622 in spring. I swear to God, any other team in MLB would have already penciled him in the opening day lineup. But (if the OH pundits are correct) we'd rather have Urias take those ABs.
  2. JFC dude, take a pill. All I’m saying is that if Bradfield wants to put on some muscle he should try doing whatever Ced’s been doing. I said “pair him with Mullins” not put Mullins in charge of him for three months.
  3. The team should pair him with Mullins during the off season. If Bradfield was able to put on muscle like this he could be a beast.
  4. There were eight SS drafted ahead of Gunnar in 2019, and every one of them received a higher signing bonus than he did. If we'd won it all in 2018 and were drafting last in 2019 he'd have still been there for the taking and affordable if we'd wanted him.
  5. 19 teams passed on drafting Gunnar once, 7 teams (including the Yankees, Braves, and Dodgers) passed him up twice, the Rays passed on him three times, and the Diamondbacks had four chances to pick him and went with somebody else each time. There is no way in hell the Henderson pick can be linked to tanking.
  6. Two months ago I was sure Holliday would make the opening day roster, but after some back and forths in my brain I think they'll start him at AAA. First off, I have the feeling it's either him or Mayo on the team to start the season (not both), and even though Jackson may have more value in the long run I think Coby has the leg up in earning the promotion right now given what he did at AAA last year and has done in Sarasota this spring. Second, it looks like we'll be seeing a lot of LH pitching this season, and while Holliday hasn't been a slouch vs southpaws I just think Mayo will prove to be more of an impact bat against them. And third, our schedule is soft to begin the season and I expect the team to get off to a fast start. Promoting Holliday at a point when the games start to get tougher (say the third week of April) would provide an emotional boost to the team when we're likely to need it.
  7. Question about the Johnson caught stealing. It appeared that the SS stuck his leg out to block Johnson’s path to 2nd base before making the tag. I thought the new rule was in place to prevent (and punish) this exact kind of play.
  8. I don't understand the doubts people have about Cowser's defense. Of course Cowser can handle CF. Will he be as good out there as Mullins or Jones or Devereaux or Blair? Probably not, at least in the beginning. But are those guys really our minimum benchmark for the position? I mean, the Yankees are penciling Aaron Judge in as their starting CF going forward. Is Cowser going to be a worse defensive outfielder than Judge? I doubt it. This is the same mindset that people are using to ding Mayo's defense at 3rd. We're used to having a potential GG at the hot corner so anybody who's merely adequate is seen is defective in some way. Mayo's defense at third will be good enough, same as Cowser in CF.
  9. This. From game one to game one sixty-two. Give him 500-600 ABs and he's the AL Rookie of the Year, even over Carter or Holliday.
  10. 4:30 into this highlight video is Bonds putting one on the flag court.
  11. I think the questions wrt Mayo’s defense at 3B are overblown. We’ve been spoiled by having Machado and Urias at the position for most of the last decade which has skewed expectations. I’m betting Coby will be average with the glove at worst, and maybe slightly above average after some settling in. If memory serves, there were questions about Westburg’s defense while he was climbing the minor league ladder. Those questions pretty much proved to be non-issues. I expect a similar result with Mayo.
  12. This would be most disappointing. Of all our AAA position prospects -- Holliday, Stowers, Kjerstad, Cowser, and Norby -- Coby Mayo has done the most to prove he belongs in the majors. I like Westburg a lot, but unless he's all of a sudden got 35-40 HR power in his bat I can't see him helping us win more ballgames than Mayo.
  13. What are the chances Mayo makes the OD roster and Holliday doesn't?
  14. One sidebar to yesterday's game was that for the last few innings Termarr Johnson played second base for the Pirates. He was 0-2 at the plate, appeared to have a long swing that could be beat by hard stuff in. A lot of folks thought he was a real possibility for us with the 1-1 pick in the 2022 draft. Safe to say we made the right choice there.
  15. Bellinger signs with the Cubs, 3/80 with opt outs after each of the first two years.
