  1. Are we better of with Skenes and an infield of Westburg (2B), Henderson (SS), and Mayo (3B), or

No Skenes and an infield of Holliday (2B), Henderson (SS) and Mayo/Westburg (3B)?  Given the depth of infield prospects and lack of pitching prospects...

I generally agree with Sports Guy on the philosophy of position player over pitcher.  But, in this case and given the Orioles major and minor league depth, I think I have to go with Skenes.

I find it interesting that there is a lot of hope (by some) that Mayo could be our answer in right filed.  He has not played the outfield professionally at all, and guys who have only played outfield in the minors  (such as Cowser and Kjerstad) are met with skepticism about just good they really are out there.  If a guy like Cowser - who has played outfield his entire life struggle when they get to the majors, how long would it take someone who hasn't played there at all?

And if someone argues that Mayo is an athlete and can learn it, what are we then saying about an athlete like Cowser who made many on here question how good he really is.

All of that being said, I'd love to see Mayo be a very competent right-fielder if that's where we need him.  I'd take it in a heartbeat if his bat sticks at the major league level.

Elias has specifically said that Mayo would get time in right field this year.  He may not have played there yet but it is clearly in their plans to get him some reps there this year.  It can't hurt and helps to get Holliday, Henderson, Westburg and Mayo all on the field together.  If Basallo is good at 1B, then all of those four, Basallo and Rutschman are regulars and not time shares.

We had offered $3.2 mm before, so it's $300  more, the midway point between asked and offered.   I can't imagine we'd exercise the option, but having it enhances O'Hearn's trade value a bit, in case he has a good year.

Also, with the option year, it's considered a multi year deal and can't be used as a comparison in future arbitration hearings.  It's an exception to the file and trial stand by teams.

Same deal if Coby Mayo outplays Jordan Westburg?

Based on Elias' earlier comments, they want to see Mayo in right field.  They're not going to have him playing right field at the ML level without ever having had a chance to do some work there at Norfolk.  I believe he's starting at AAA but will have a real chance to move up during the season, whether at 3B or RF.

Like his refusal to feed into the whole Buscone system in the DR because it took advantage of young talented boys and uneducated families while enriching rich men. Was he wrong in that assessment, probably not, but when everyone else plays in that system you can't just stand on principle without consequences for your baseball operations. The consequences for the Orioles is they basically ignored an entire talent pipeline.

I actually admired him for taking that stand and refusing to field a scab team during the strike.  Those issues were a matter of principle for him.  Refusing to play in a corrupt international market certainly hurt the team's ability to develop talent, but MLB profited from an immoral practice, IMO.

  6. I find it incredibly amusing that a politician is complaining about Angelos lying.  The State got fairly ironclad 15 year agreement with the Orioles (the same 15 years that the Ravens signed for).  Clearly, they are not going to give up development rights now, unless Rubenstein wants to pursue that, but who cares?  Politicians are only happy when they get to see their names in the papers.  Especially ones in an obscure position like State Treasurer.  Most people have no clue what the Comptroller or Treasurer do.

  7. I believe the hearings started today, although I don't know when any Orioles players were scheduled.  Also, it's been reported that Perez would be a free agent after 2024.  So this looks in the O's ability to keep him through his last arb year (2024) and his first year of free agency.  Unusual, but at 34, and given his situation in Baltimore, he was amendable to making such a deal.

Me being me I view it from the opposite view and Elias just doesn't want to give up what would be needed.

If we were the only team "in on" Cease, I would tend to agree.  But it appears to be a baseball-wide conclusion that the WS are asking for he moon and no other team has been willing to pay the price, not just the Orioles.

  9. 1. Fantasy Camp '96.  My team had played our double header at Ed White when it was still a White Sox stadium. The camp staff forgot to lay on a bus to take us back to our hotel.  The head guy said they had some vans and asked any of the campers that had rental cars could give others a ride.  One of the guys looked at me and asked if I'd like a ride and I said "sure Brooks, thanks."

    2. At a game in KC with my 10 year old.  We're standing next to the 3rd Base railing watching guys long tossing one was Brad Pennington.  I told me son he could through harder than anyone on the team but never knew where it was going.  Guy next to me says "that's my boy."  I'm thinking I sure hope I wasn't too obnoxious!

    3. Finally, at a Stallions game a couple of years later.  Guy sitting in front of us asks if I'm always this bad.  My son says "heck no, you should see him at Orioles games."

I’ve said it before a few dozen times here but this thread is a good example:

If the Orioles won the World Series in 5 games some people here would be upset that it wasn’t won in 4.

And we’d cuss Angelo’s.  If only we’d paid Montgomery, we’d have swept damnit!

There’s growing belief the White Sox could hold onto Dylan Cease until the trade deadline. The Orioles have the best prospects but don’t want to part with top infield prospect Jordan Westburg.

    A. I have no idea whether Heyman has correct information or not.

    B. I doubt that the offer was Westburg for Cease straight up.  So it may be that they asked for others and Westburg.  Elias might have said if you want those guys, you can't have Westburg too.  So I can't judge this based on the information that Heyman has presented even if it is semi-accurate as far as it goes.
