  1. It might be a good time for MLB & Disney to have another sit down.  Apparently ESPN is kind of a red headed stepchild amongst the media properties Disney owns.  https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2021/10/10/disney-shift-to-streaming-puts-espn-in-position-of-clinging-to-past
MLB is still a valuable franchise with tons of content.  It seems as though MLB’s recent model has been to spread its product across multiple outlets (FOX, FoxSports, TBS, Yahoo, ESPN, MLB, and of course the regional outlets). https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/mlb-espn-tv-rights-2022-2028

Just my opinion, not having to figure out where MLB is showing on a given night might be beneficial.

ESPN’s cable model is currently profitable, but streaming is the future.  If MLB is seeking a streaming impact.  Disney+ couldn’t be stronger, especially for family households.  A demographic MLB needs for any future.  On the other hand I think MLB can help Disney+ by providing some of an older demographic in Disney’s streaming competion with Netflix.

Fun fact: Grenier was born on Halloween, McKenna was born on Valentines Day.   Grenier is the older of the two by 3.5 months.

I noticed that!  Did you also notice they are both 5’11” with about 7 lbs difference between them?   McKenna 7 lbs heftier.     Both right handed hitters, I think they could wear each other’s uniforms for a game on the bench and no one would notice! ?  One more: Greiner went to Oregon State while McKenna was born in Oregon!

  3. McKenna’s 6 seasons of milb: 1781 AB’s = .266/.354/.404/.758.
    Greiner’s 3 seasons of milb:  936 AB’s = .230/.337/.359/.696

Greiner had 3 years of high level college ball for what that is worth.  Both will be 25 in spring training.  Of course both have a black hole for 2020.   It certainly seems Greiner is getting squeezed by rising prospects and 4A types like Jones & Martin.  The bat is what it is (meh) and the glove is what it is (hmmm).   Can a rebuilding major league team go into a season with Urias, Mateo, Gutierrez and Greiner holding down 2B, SS & 3B on a daily basis or do you go get Galvis again?

Of course I’d rather see the Orioles offer Kyle Seagar a landing spot once it becomes apparent to he and his agent that his market is limited.  Then Gutierrez is the UTL.

Personally, I'd like to see both him and Urias get near everyday reps for at least the first half of the season until they either prove themselves or Westburg or Vavra is ready to take their place.

I agree with this.  Mateo’s potential to hit in front of Mullins whether it is 1,2 or 9,1 could really dial up Mullins’ run production.  I don’t think Mateo’s showing in the Dominican this winter will influence any decision toward that possibility except for showing he is healthy.

Yes, because the Dodgers really seem to care about their payroll.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them exceed $300 million next year if the Bauer contract isn't cancelled.

Well it’s true the O’s and the Dodgers play in different realities not just different leagues?!  Just figure Dodgers might seek something for someone they aren’t even using at this point.

Stroman is younger than Price and Greinke and I'd think be a safer gamble. There is always going to be risk acquiring a pitcher, but if the O's do plan to be competitive in 2023-25, then I don't see how it happens without acquiring any starting pitchers.

Of course we are all playing with house money here in the hangout so the operative word certainly is “gamble”.

The Orioles are not yet in the position to “gamble” 4 years / $90 million+ on Stroman.   Stroman is the type of guy you pick up on an expiring contract just before the deadline to help you in a final push into the playoffs.  He’s the kind of pitcher who hopefully becomes your #1A to the #1 already on staff.

David Price OTOH is a $8 million “crap shoot” to relieve a current contender of some payroll.   We hope for someone to fill the #3 or #4 rotation slot with a pedigree, some star power, an ability to eat some innings, some mentoring skills and maybe some return at the 2022 deadline.  (BTW my $8 million figure is based upon the Dodgers paying half of what they owe on Price.)

  7. Adam may want to manage but in the few years he has been away from MLB he has probably lost the real connections to key decision makers that might support him in his quest. The Orioles have completely turned over in regards to FO personnel and philosophy.  He was only in AZ for a minute.  Too much heat in his hometown of SD where they thought they were ready to win now.
He is not without a role here in Birdland however.  Look at the big picture Adam.  Job security and renewed status in a community that will love to have him back.  A beloved institution just turned 76 a few days ago and while John Sterling forges on in NY doing PBP at 83,  I think a third of a season of 76 year old Jim Palmer, a third of a season of Adam Jones and a third of a season of Ben McDonald doing color analysis on TV would be fantastic.  They might even consider moving Ben back into radio color as he was very good in that role with Joe Angel.

Come on Adam ….. play the long game here, managers are just hired to get fired!

  8. We may be looking to take a “next step”. But I’m thinking more “baby step”.  I have been pondering David Price for awhile.  Not sure how I missed the OP back in August.  Anyway,  I’m thinking Dodgers pick up 8 million more of the original 32 leaving us with 8 million.  I am also re signing Matt Harvey now for a little more than he signed for last year.  He took the ball for us 28 times.  Sure not great results but there is value in taking the ball.  The third starter I would court is Rich Hill.  Yes, 42 y.o. next March Rich Hill, who took the ball for 31 starts this year and produced a 2.5 WAR.
If I could have all 3 ( Price, Harvey & Hill ) for under 15 million out of pocket and get 70 starts out of them and 55 more out of Means and GrayRod I’d be pretty happy!

Bring these guys into the fold early this off season!  I mean as soon as the ink is dry on the new CBA!  Put Akin, Kremer, Lopez, Zimmerman, Baumann, A. Wells, Lowther on notice that they will need to fight their way onto the opening day roster.   T. Wells goes back to starting in spring and if successful, starts in Norfolk rotation in April.

BTW I seem to remember David Price hoping the O’s would come after him when the Red Sox threw all that money at him.  There was a bit of admiration toward the Buck/Jones clubhouse oh so long ago.

  9. Obviously the Tampa model says you trade Rich Hill to the Mets at the deadline for Matt Dyer, an A ball catcher/utility with a .872 OPS (plus the remaining contract of 60 day IL P Tommy Hunter).  They can hope Matt Dyer gives them a Kike’ Hernandez performance in 2024 I guess.

  10. If we EVER have a meaningful game or series against the Red Sox in the future Robert Andino needs to throw out the first pitch.

Barstool trivia question… who was the Hall of Famer playing for the O’s that night?
    Vladimir Guerrero.

Is there any concern there is very few homeruns so far? I love the BA, but 2 homeruns total for this advance hitter.

I’d rather dream of Cowser leading off for the O’s with Mullins going 30/30/100 rbi behind him in the 2 or 3 hole! ?

BTW: Sal Frelich has been in Brewers A+ for 10 games and is being challenged, (OPS:580) after tearing up rookie(4 gms. 1.196) & A (16 games 1.085).  Frelich also only has 2 minor league HR’s.  Psychologically I think you should challenge Cowser before the season ends.  Move him up!

Last night the O's win and every other team in the division lost.

I believe that might be the first time in four years that has happened.

One night later..... Turn about is fair play they say.  With an extra loss for us due to the dh sweep (ouch).
I don’t root for the O’s to lose but I was intrigued by the idea of the Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, Mariners and Athletics all ending the day with 64 losses.  Looks like the east teams will be at 63, west 65.

  13. Three things:

1.) If everyone took their finger and ran it around the nacho carrier to get every bit of that cheese sauce we wouldn’t have a rat problem!

2.) The rat got free admission after getting it’s COVID shot.

3.) The video of the Ch 2 report reminds me how long it’s been since fans said  “I miss Memorial Stadium.  Camden Yards is filled with the wine and cheese crowd”.  (Well at least the rat has a cheese connection)

    (Three strikes I’m out!)
