@Tony-OH After thinking about this, I bet we probably see Kjerstad start to get rotated in during the Reds and Nats upcoming serieses. Unless we need his roster spot, but McKenna has no role right now other than needing to clear waivers to go to AAA.

I’d really like to see big Heston hit a bomb in that ballpark in Cinncy.

The Reds are starting 2 lefties this weekend. Not happening.

Correct.  Mike Baumann pitched 1/3 of an inning facing one batter when he got the last out of the 8th on April 20 against KC.

Yes- but KB comment was referring to a pitcher who came back in for the following inning after retiring one batter to end the previous inning. I think thats the difference. They can be pulled with less than 3 batter minimum between innings but if they come back out for the following inning they would still have to fulfill the 3 batter minimum.

Does Holliday make OD, but at the expense of Gunnar on the IL?

It appears that it’s McKenna vs Cowser for the last bench spot. Does losing Hilliard on waivers all but guarantee that McKenna gets the nod early on because we couldn’t sneak Hilliard as depth to AAA?

Now that Irvin, and his no options are in rotation, could we start out with a 5 man bench, since we have more up/down flexibility in the pen?

Gunnar is fine is sounds like and is said to be on track to join the spring lineups next week.

Free Agenrs ….  Clevinger, Wood , Lorenzen (They want cost players that Elias isn’t willing to trade)

    Trades Burnes, Gilbert, Garrett, Luzardo

These guys are better options IMO…..Burnes and 1 year of controls is the detractor for him. But, might be at a lower cost.

Are those free agents better options solely based on not having to give up players in a trade? I dont see how any of those are better options otherwise, and even with giving up premium talent I'm not sure I see it.

If he's elite at SS, all of that translates to 3b also. Especially factoring in his size. He's absolutely built for 3b. If you have another plus option at SS (Ortiz? Holliday?), moving him makes sense and would create a lockdown left side. I haven't seen Ortiz and Holliday play...sounds like Ortiz is hopefully the real deal, but I dunno.

If you want him at SS for now, I wouldn't disagree, but long term....how many 6'3" 225 lb shortstops can you think of in their 30's? Historically, how many gold glovers can you think of that big besides Cal (who won 2 in 15  years)?

I dont know that being good at SS just automatically translates to 3B. Not saying hes not better at 3B, but I just liked what I saw of him at SS. There is no guarantee that either Ortiz or Holiday will play a better SS in the big leagues either. Gunnar is on pace to be a free agent at 27 so not sure we'll have to worry about him in his 30's. Would love that, but I have no faith in Angelos to allow the kind of extension its going to take. But he's also about as athletic as you can be at 6'3 225. Hes not some lumbering big man.

If Gunnar had played all season at SS he would have been deserving, and probably have won the gold glove.  He’s not capable of being a good SS.  He IS a very good SS.

It seems like a lot of people sleep on Gunnar's defense at SS. He is elite and should be locked in at SS until proven otherwise. He was amazing defensively when he took over the position full time.

I feel like the Rays could fall off a cliff in 2024 and finish 4th or 5th in the AL East.

Wander Franco (5.5 WAR in 2023) is gone.

Tyler Glasnow (3.53 ERA in 2023) is gone.

Shane McClanahan to miss all of 2024 with surgery.

    That's like 10-12 WAR gone.

Junior Caminero will slide into Franco's spot. Springs, Rasmussen will be back at some point during the 2024 season for McClanahan. Shane Baz and the recently acquired Ryan Pepiot will be healthy and in the bigs for Glasnow. Still have Eflin, Littell, Civale, Bradley. Maybe those guys dont fill those shoes completely but the Rays should be just fine.

Check out the Rats & Barrels podcast over in the MLB section.  They touch on a lot of this.  I was actually surprised to hear that not all of the teams, and actually very few of the teams are doing this.  To me, it sounds like the Orioles, Astros, Dodgers, Rays are the cream of the crop.  You also hear mention of the Brewers & Mariners.   But they state very confidently that very few teams are doing these things.  I was very surprised by that.

Thanks for the heads up. I have worked in sports performance for a long time. Spent 15 years working in division 1 college athletics working with all sports, but mostly basketball. Have spent the last few years more in the private sector and work with a number of pro athletes currently. I'm well versed in all the modalities that you are referring to, and I think you would be surprised at how many teams and individual athletes do not value those things. What you will find especially at the professional level, is that these guys are given a ton of autonomy. Some guys choose not to do those things or do some of those things, some guys have the money to afford their own "team" of specialists around them, and some will follow the team program pretty strictly. I would guess that the latter is the least of guys who are pro's and certainly veterans. I do agree with you whole heartedly in that it seems like the Orioles value guys who are bought into the system that they provide, and that cohesiveness shows in their play but also in their preparation.

Unfortunately- as @Sports Guy touched on, a lot of what happens with injuries is tied to luck. I dont think there are any programs that can "prevent" injuries, you just hope to reduce the likelihood of injuries. From the outside looking in, it seems like that Orioles are certainly monitoring this stuff and doing a lot of the "right" things- but Its risky business as an athletic trainer or a strength coach to tie yourself and your success on injury rates, because its sports, and sometimes things happen.

All in all, its a great award for those guys, and I know that they have a great reputation throughout the sport. Happy that they are a part of the Orioles.

These guys are well ahead of the curve in rest science.  It’s not just the workouts and physical routines they do, it’s maximizing the three most important things people often take for granted: rest/recovery, sleep, and nutrition.  People have questioned  how they move people around to different position but it’s not just roster flexibility, it’s having guys (Gunnar) play a less physically demanding positions part of the time.  They maximize their sleep cycles which is done by eliminating all light and sleeping at colder temperatures.  They optimize their nutrition intake depending on where they are in their weekly/daily routines. And lastly they put an emphasis on mobility & flexibility training.  It’s been incredible to watch/.

Has any of this been reported as actually happening? How do you know that the players are doing this, and how do you know that other teams are not?

The idea for me is to get a guy with closer stuff without having to pay closer money. Hard to pass up a 100+ sinker. His numbers last year are interesting. Overall 11 K/9, 4 BB/9, but dramatic split between TOR  (8 K/9, 3 BB/9) and STL (12.7 K/9 with 5+ BB/9). Appears TOR had him take a more dialed back approach? The times I saw him pitch against us he passed the eye test. Still, BB/9 are concerning and I agree we should not overpay in salary or years.

He has only one career error which it looks like you found. Not sure what to do with that, it certainly looks bad!

    Sounds like Fuji

I'd much rather have six years of McDermott than two of Cease. I may not make a 1-for-1 trade there with his potential.

Love McDermott's potential and I see where you are going...but Cease has 11.7 WAR in the last three years, has two years of control and finished 2nd in the AL Cy Young in 2022. This shouldn't even be a question. Even in a well recognized down year this year he struck out 214 batters in 177 innings. Maybe McDermott becomes all that and more, maybe not. But I dont think you can pass up on a guy who has done it at the MLB level and has multiple years of control.

For comparison- on our roster last year of guys in the rotation- only Bradish had more than Cease's 2.4 WAR. So even in a down year for him he is a significant upgrade. And he of course has the ability to get back to a potential 4-6 WAR for each of the next two years.

  12. What would it realistically take to get Cease AND Luis Robert in a package from the White Sox. We have the prospects to do it- just curious what it may take. I ask because the Callis proposal of Mullins for Burnes leaves a gaping hole in CF. But if we did that, and then turned around and got Cease and Robert. Now our Rotation is the best in baseball and we've filled the hole left by Mullins.

I would hope that by opening day some of this is settled via trades.  One thing that is striking to me (and it is not a one year fluke) is that the team that out homers their opponent in the postseason this year is 17-2.  While we need to play well in the regular season I would want to build a team that has the best chance to be successful in the postseason.  In Camden I think that means an emphasis on power and preferably left handed power and pitching that limits homers.  I think we have a good start on the pitching with Grayson and Bradish.  Bradish was especailly good giving up 0.7 HR/9.  Third in all of baseball.  Build a pen that limits homers, add one more starter that fits this profile and I would feel good about the staff.

With this goal in mind the locks to me for position players would be Henderson 3B, Holliday SS, Mayo 1B/DH, Santander RF/DH, Kjerstad RF, Rautschman C, Mullins CF

That leaves Westburg and Ortiz for 2B, Hays and Cowser for LF, O'Hearn and Mountcastle for 1B/DH.  I would prefer Westburg, Cowser and O'Hearn and would look to trade Hays, Mountcastle and Ortiz.

The lineup could look like this:

    Mullins - CF

    Holliday - SS

    Rautschman - C

    Henderson - 3B

    Santander - DH

    Mayo - 1B

    Kjerstad - RF

    Cowser - LF

    Westburg - 2B

    Bench - McCann, O'Hearn, Urias, 5th Outfielder

If there is one thing I know about Hyde and the Orioles. There is no chance they are running 4 rookies out there in the same lineup ever night. And a 5th guy whos played less than half a year.

First off, I’m a huge Adley fan. I firmly believe he brings a winning culture to this team that can’t be measured with a WAR stat. He’s someone we’re lucky to have.

That being said, we all know that the team seemed to have offensive issues that last few weeks of the season. Not shocking as this is a young team at key core positions and the strain of chasing that division title at that age is exhausting.

Adley specifically is a major component of the teams offensive output. While he had a strong start to September he really seemed exhausted to me by the end of the month and into the playoffs. He had a lot of swings that were unbalanced with severe uppercuts being lead by his upper body as his legs seemed exhausted with a lack of lower body drive. I think of his first at bat in game two of the ALDS on the 3-1 count as an example.

It seems by the end of the season  he noticeably put on some weight. Not shocking if you’re crouching three hours  a day, and are spending more time recovering by the end of the season. I would argue catchers don’t need to be as sticky anymore as the collision at the plate plays no longer exist in baseball. Perhaps a little better conditioning next season and more rest days would do the trick?

    Thoughts?

There is no evidence that he put on weight or bodyfat or any of that. He also had one of his best months of the season in September and was the Orioles best hitter for the entire month. I do not think his conditioning is of any concern, he is built well and held up over the course of an entire MLB season, very impressive physically.

There are so many directions this team can go in this offseason. These are just a few ideas of the types of moves I would like to see:

    1) Westburg for Woo

    2) Cowser, Mountcastle, Norby, Kremer and Max Wagner for Robert, Jr and Christian Mena (his profile sounds like one the Os would like and could be a reliever very soon)

This is a lot to give and I could see this trade backfiring but Robert has a team friendly 4 years left on his deal and he has big power and big upside.

    3)  Sign a starter.  This offseason, the starters that are interesting are Gray, Snell, Montgomery, Stroman, Nola and ERod. You should be able to afford one of those guys. I think Snell is going to get too much. Nola would be my preference but I’m guessing he gets too much.  Any of the remaining guys have Enough warts that they could get 3 years or less and that’s the area the Os need to be in.

An under the radar name would be Maeda. He has some very nice stats. The issue with Maeda is that he has a real injury history and he’s tough to rely on. He’s a better version of Tyler Wells.

    4) Sign Kimbrel. He will be coming off a 1/10 deal. If you can get him for 2 years or less, he gives you a vet back end of the pen presence.

    5) Trade Santander. One of the pieces I would be looking to add is a ML ready/close to ML ready (or already in the majors) BP piece that fits the traits of missing bats, good command and control, high strikeout type guy.  Should be able to get at least one other top 10 prospect as well.

    6) Sign Henderson to a 7 year extension for 110-120M

    7) Give Holliday an 8 year deal for around 100M.  Holliday makes the OD roster.

    8. Mateo is traded or non tendered.

    9) Mayo makes team out of ST

IF: Mayo/OHearn, Ortiz, Holliday, Gunnar, Urias

OF: Kjerstad, Mullins, Robert and Hays

    C- Adley and McCann

DH- a rotation of guys with Kjerstad probably getting more at bats than anyone else.

SP: Bradish, GRod, Woo, Means, FA starter

BP: Kimbrel, Hall, Wells, Irvin, Coloumbe, Cano, Perez

That’s 24 players. One more in the pen…Competition between who you receive in trade and Tate.

Last player is likely to be an OFer. With Robert here, you don’t need someone who can play CF, so bringing back Hicks could work in this scenario.

    Salary added from trades/signings

    Robert- 12.5M

    Kimbrel- 10-15M

    FA starter- 12-20M

Salary subtracted from trades/non tenders:  Santander, Mateo, Mountcastle. That is about 18M of expected arb increases.

    Payroll:

    10 guys making league minimum…7.5

9 arb eligible guys- roughly 29M

    3 “big” acquisitions: 35-48M

    McCann- 4M

Last few spots are likely to be cheaper salaries. Just call those 3 spots a total of 4M (May be high but leave it at that).

Total payroll is in the area of 80-92M depending on the cost of the starter and Kimbrel.

Not sure how realistic it would be but I would offer Gunnar more years- 10 if we can.

  16. Not sure what Elias thinks, but will they still be looking at DL Hall as a starter? He's been pretty damn awesome since coming back up. I'm sure the stuff is playing up as a reliever but he always had stuff. Command has been much improved and so have the results.

    So you've got:

Bradish, Rodriguez, Means, Kremer, Wells, Hall  as guys on the roster. I think you can make a trade for a stud SP and then let the others fight it out for the 5th spot and also as much needed SP depth/bullpen help. But I am not counting out Hall if thats the route they take. He has been really impressive.

Out of 27 Innings, we got to enjoy 11 competitive innings where it looked like we had a chance. That was a blast!

11 seems very high. We had the lead for not even one out the entire series. So I guess you count the first three innings of game one, and the first inning game two?

Tbh, I don’t really have high hopes for free agency after this last offseason.  When is the last time this organization made a real splash?  The 90s?  Payroll was reasonable in the 2010s, but it’s not like they brought in any stars.

Any real hot stove action will have to be on the trade front.

The last time we made a "big" splash was probably Ubaldo.. but the last time we really went out and got a star and probably out spent others to do so was Miguel Tejada heading into the 2004 season.

Tampa won’t have McClanahan next year and we will see about Franco but they could get healthier and be a big threat again. I’m honestly more worried about Toronto and Boston than NY for 2024.

Some talk that Boston is a real sleeper for Othani.

    Tampa will be loaded

    Yandy Diaz

    Caminero/Franco (if hes there)

    Arozarena

    Raley

    J Lowe

    Paredes

    B Lowe

    Siri

    Betencourt/FA

Glasnow, Rasmussen, Springs, Eflin, Civale, Baz

Plus whatever moves they decide to make. Yes I know Rasmussen and Springs and Baz are coming back from TJ and will miss more time.
