Is it too soon to bring him up to Baltimore?

I'm a bit disappointed when I see comps to Brandon Nimmo and Jim Eisenreich. Solid players but nothing special.
[INSERT DISCLAIMER: I know that some first round picks don't make it to the majors at all. I don't need a lecture from Drungo here. The fact is, player comps given at draft time generally represent a reasonable representation of players expected up-side potential. Even though some first rounders won't turn out to be very good, you will never hear someone just drafted in the first round compared to Chito Martinez. The names given usually are somewhat aspirational, what you would hope the guy will turn into based on what the scouts see now. And to me, it's usually a better player than Jim Eisenreich].
I'd probably rather have the guy who's 90% chance to be Eisenreich/Nimmo than a guy with 10% chance to be Carlos Correa. (Not saying those are Cowser/Lawler's chances, just that there's more to it than ceiling)

Tell that to Cadyn Grenier.
You have any evidence he was positional need based besides the fact he went higher than the publications had him?

I doubt the gulf is that large actually.
Those websites have a lot of smart folks working for them and they are not without resources.
Lots of folks want to work in baseball.
It might not be. But it's big enough that I'm done assuming any GM who didn't pick based on them screwed up.
Don't those places get lots of second-hand information and maybe see the players once? -
Also like to remind everyone that MLB teams don't draft for "positional need" so there's no way Kjerstad had anything to do with this pick
-
You guys know Elias probably has 20x more information than all the prospect websites, right?
-
Quick reminder that everyone here and all the draft publications probably have 5% of the information about the players in the draft than the least-prepared MLB team

Quick off topic: the #8 pick is ranked 39th on the latest MLB.com mock.
Takes some heat off Elias, perhaps??
Could be worse, right? We could be Kansas City right now. Imagine...

My guess is his models didn't like Lawler because he turns 19 in a week, and he didn't like Rocker due to the injury/effectiveness questions. Elias seems very much like a "trust the process" guy, so I doubt he'd let Appel and Aiken get in the way of drafting a first-round pitcher
-
Lawler has more upside I guess, but a much lower floor. I'd have preferred either him or Rocker here, but the kid seems like a pretty good bet to be a strong centerfielder, especially with the bat. And he's college, so hopefully not too far away

I generally watch the broadcast until the Orioles make their first pick, then follow the MLB draft tracker and the message boards here for the rest of it. I ended up watching the entire broadcast last year though

What does Jones have to do?
I'd like to know that myself

What's your take on Jahmai Jones? Any issues with his play that might be keeping him in the minors?
Also would love to hear about Cameron Bishop and what you think his likely role is at the ML level -
I'd rather give out 7-8 Scott Kingery deals than one Chris Davis deal
But in all seriousness, Adley is the type of prospect you absolutely offer this kind of deal to. If he fails, you're out what, 30 million over six years? That's not going to cripple the franchise and the upside is MASSIVE-

I guess so, but anything he does is a bonus at this point. I don't have any expectations

How is this guy available?
Command struggles, apparently

Cadyn Greiner's home run was a no-doubter off the bat. He crushed it to right-center, probably went at least 400 feet. He had an error in the first where a bouncer he ranged to his right for went off his glove. Not the easiest play, but one a good shortstop needs to make. After that he put on a defensive clinic. He had about three highlight reel plays, two of which were tough ground balls he fielded and flipped to second to try and start a double play. Runners were barely safe at first both times. Cullen's throws from second weren't the greatest, but it might not have mattered. The Akron fans near me were very impressed with Greiner's D and one turned to me and asked if he always played like that. If the newfound ability to hit is real, he could be something special.

I have no idea if Akron's gun is fast or slow, but Grayson was mostly 97-98 for the first three innings, touching 99 once. Fourth inning he started to hit 96 a couple of times and in the fifth he was 95-96. He threw a ton of strikes--probably too many. Only time they flashed the pitch breakdown for Grayson, he was at 75% strikes thrown. Akron's plan was clearly to swing early and often and they put a lot of balls in play. Grayson might have benefited from being around the zone more and burning a few more pitches to see if he could get chases.
Other notes from the game:

Tyler Joyner was throwing 90, but it looked like about 80 after watching Grayson.
It was some kid's tenth birthday party and the guy running the between inning "entertainment" had the whole stadium sing him happy birthday. After he realized all eyes and the camera were on him, the kid started doing the worm. Everybody got a real kick out of that. Tons of laughter-

Acquiring Gutierrez is a bit of a head scratcher for me. The guy has never hit for power, seems like a high error guy at 3B, and not sure how he's part of the future or much better than Leyba as a place holder.
Need for warm bodies at AAA if they start the carousel of 2B/3B at Baltimore?

Assuming Franco needs the IL, that's who I'd like to see

The question is, what will he be in the longer term? Remember, this is a guy who only threw 32 innings in AA and then missed almost all of 2019 and 2020. He wasn’t likely to be instantly successful in the majors. Let’s see what he is in 2023.
He could be better than he is this year. I doubt he'll be so much better that it's going to be hard to replace the production

First pitch to Santander, also clearly a strike

And wow, Astros pitching coach ejected. I'd be pretty pissed too if my pitcher didn't get those calls
