A four hour drive isn't far. A player can easily be contacted after a game ends and be at OPACY by noon the following day and not be overly fatigued. Other than for the convenience of fans why would you need to be closer?

If I'm a team and I know an ump consistently calls pitches that are in a particular zone outside of the strike zone strikes I would attempt to take advantage.

There is also just the fact that the better overall infield prospects are predominantly playing shortstop when drafted. Not a lot of HS second basemen being looked at as viable professional prospects.
