  2. I think that if they have a high level of risk then that would preclude them from being first or second round talents. I was also speaking in the general sense and not specifically about Baumler and Mayo. That was why I used H.S. Kim and put him in the eleventh round. I think the overslot strategy was stronger before they added slotting. You used to be able to really throw a hunk of change at a kid who wanted to go to school. Such as when the Pirates gave 5M to Josh Bell after selecting him in the second round. You can't make a power move like that today. Did most teams go college heavy? I know the O's did early but didn't realize it was a general trend in the 2020 draft.
  3. I don't see them paying for a FA stopgap in a year they won't be expected to contend.
  4. I think I tend to be not as high on overslots as most people. Let's take Hokum Sven Kim as a hypothetical. Hokum's number is $1.5 million. He's still there in the eleventh round and the O's pick him up and with the savings from going underslot in the first round given Hokum his 1.5M. Now some folks will say the O's picked up a mid second round talent in the eleventh round, since 1.5M is slot for the 49.5 pick in the draft. The way I look at it, if other teams though Hokum was a mid second round talent they would have just picked him and coughed up the 1.5M. Either Hokum's number would have been even higher if he had gone earlier, which is possible, or teams didn't think his price matched his talent and he's probably closer to say a third round talent.
  5. It did make it easier to not promote guys.
  6. I just wouldn't put fourth and five round drafts picks that barely played this year over a guy like that. Different people have different criteria.
  7. They missed a huge fluke. I think if you spend resources looking for the next Yaz you are going to not do work that has a much higher success rate. If you get a Yaz you rejoice, if you lose a Yaz you shrug it off.
  8. Maybe they knew how bad the glove was and didn't think corner outfield defense was a priority?
  9. Can't say I was expecting that. Good for him.
  10. I'll counter with the guy that was drafted by MLB for six consecutive seasons: He also played in the NBA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hendrickson
  11. It could happen, we've already heard Mike Trout but as a SS two years running.
  12. Yep, same thing when folks call a mid to late first round pick a bust because they are merely a ML player and not a really good ML player.
  13. Folks tend to be overly generous with player comps.
  14. I'd just as soon watch a 3TO at bat as watch a can of corn or weak ground ball to second.
  15. It was a serious comp on my part. ChuckS made the comp in the draft thread.
  16. Because they get pulled out of school and play baseball full time. That's what the Buscones are for.
  17. I don't think it's a good sign for the system as a whole when so many current draftees are ranking this high. These kids barely got to play this year and it seems as if they are making the list because they haven't had a chance to shows the flaws in their game.
  18. Was Mountcastle playing third when he was called up?
  19. I think I remember reports being that he got a lot stronger this year. With the ML ball being what it is he might hit for an acceptable about of power.
