That's exactly how these things work. Either a pitch is a good pitch or it isn't. It has nothing to do on what the hitter does. You can throw a bad pitch and get the out, you can throw a great pitch and get beat. That wasn't a great 3-0 pitch but it was far from a meatball. It was a decent 3-0 pitch and he got beat.

Looks to me that the most common score during that time period had the winning team scoring three runs.

I think you have an unrealistic expectation for what's a good or bad pitch in that situation. I'm guessing if he'd popped it up you wouldn't have said "He got lucky with that pop up, that was a bad 3-0 pitch.".

It was an elevated 98 MPH 4 seamer. For a 3-0 pitch it was decent.

Oh it was a crap swing. But does he swing if the count is 1-1 instead of 0-2? Sometimes guy get into a defensive mode on 0-2 and try and foul everything off. It was a crap swing on a pitch he shouldn't have offered at.
