How many times on this site has someone suggested a trade with the Marlins?

Ever?  Trade talks with the Marlins for AJ Burnett were all the rage 17-18 years ago.  I'd say over 1,000 posts on Orioles/Marlins trades.

I am watching for any notable tone in Roch's "$7.5mm for Anthony Santander!" report.     Is it going to be like "this is almost the same as Aaron Judge"?

Its just an Arb3 number for a decent Super Two with a lot of HR and RBI.     Arb4 drama coming up again in ten quick months.     But we'd like to trade him for the Moon and Stars between now and then!

Lol.  I bet the Angeloses, Roch, and a handful of posters on here are just devastated that the Orioles' payroll has increased. Here come the excuses about how expensive things are now and how they simply CANNOT AFFORD to add any more payroll to the major league roster. LOL

Someone catch me up. Why has this thread turned "hot" this afternoon?

No reason.  Nothing to catch up on.  The Orioles and Marlins remain good trade partners, but nothing appears close.

Teams on the verge of contending trade for 28/29 year old players. Teams that aren't do not. I really don't view the Marlins being even remotely close to contending. They arguably have the worst offense in baseball going into the season.

That's fair, but there have certainly been reports that the Marlins want major league players for their arms.

  5. Humorously enough, O'Hearn is now with the Orioles and Diaz is not.  Last week, it was Diaz with the Orioles and O'Hearn in DFA limbo.  Then before that, O'Hearn with the Orioles and Diaz was not.  Then, before that, Diaz was with the Orioles and O'Hearn was not.

    What a weird offseason subplot.

+1 to both, these guys are not platoon players. McKenna will probably get a few starts against RHP to rest Cedric but not on a regular basis. Adley will rest day games after night games whether the pitcher is RH or LH, but should start 150+ games at C or DH.

RHP: Cedric CF, Adley C, Gunnar SS, Santander DH, Mountcastle 1B, Stowers RF, Hays/Vavra LF, Urias 3B, Frazier 2B

LHP: Cedric CF, Adley C, Mountcastle 1B, Santander DH, Gunnar 3B, Hays LF, Urias 2B, Stowers RF, Mateo SS

Adley DH vs RHP: Cedric CF, Adley DH, Gunnar SS, Santander RF, Mountcastle 1B, Hays/Vavra LF, Urias 3B, Frazier 2B, McAnn C

Adley DH vs LHP: Cedric CF, Adley DH, Mountcastle 1B, Santander RF, Gunnar 3B, Hays LF, Urias 2B, McAnn C, Mateo SS

I just feel like Mateo on the bench against all righties is a waste, especially defensively.  This is yet another reason why signing Frazier made no sense, and why trading one of Mateo/Urias does make sense.

Nothing wrong with your post though, I agree with all of this if that is the team we have going in (though I think it is McCann, not McAnn :) )

Not sure I'd want to give up a player/prospect combo of Arraez' value for two years of Lopez with where the Orioles currently sit. I don't think it would move the needle enough for them if they sent Santander or Mullins, and I'd rather not see them lose pieces like Cowser/Westburg/etc for short term deals.

If they could move players like Hays/Mateo/Urias or pick up longer-term pieces like Luzardo/Rogers/Cabrera, that'd be a different story.

Arraez put up 4.4 WAR, while Mateo and Urias put up 3.8 and 3.6, respectively.  If the Orioles add someone like Tate to a Urias or Mateo, which they could, then that arguably beats the Twins offer (to the extent the Marlins would want to add a reliever in the deal).

Solid…1.73 WHIP and a 5 ERA? This guy is a AAAA pitcher

Saying the pickup/move was solid, i.e. taking a flyer on a guy with good K numbers who had success in the past.  His ERA is bloated from his awful 2022.  Do I think he's the next Cionel Perez? Not necessarily - but it is solid insofar that it is no risk, some reward.

Miami has been after several different guys on different teams and different positions, according to reports.

Lopez is also not the only guy they are willing to trade.

There is zero reason for a team like the Os, who matches up extremely well with Miami, to not come through on some deal with them.

The Os aren’t interested in drafting pitching early. I agree with them there. They aren’t interested in paying what’s needed for pitching. I agree in some ways with that.

So, if you won’t buy it and you won’t draft it, you have to get pitching through trades. It makes it more vital and necessary for the Orioles to perhaps even overpay slightly in a trade since that’s the best way they will acquire higher end pitching.

The Orioles are choosing option 4 - options from the scrap heap and pray it works.  (to other posters, no, Gibson is not from the scrap heap, but it's sad that Elias said he was going to get a 1-3 pitcher this offseason and only wound up with Gibson.
