JDM gone. Brantley gone. Justin Turner gone. Conforto next.
Are we going to do anything or are Mazara, Cordero, and Frazier REALLY the only "bats" we're going to sign? Perhaps Dominic Smith will accept our Confederate money if he doesn't get a better offer from a Korean team?
We'll have the pick of the litter amongst the Pineda/Davies/Archer tier!
But think of all the money the Angeloses are saving! They could potentially buy another house/boat/fancy car!

I'm a lefty too, and I would have signed for even less than Frazier. lol
1 year, $7.5M?

But Turner would have blocked someone…..
Yea, I didn't really want Turner either lol. I'm to young to get this exasperated this easily

Would have rather have signed Justin Turner. I think he is going to be a much better hitter w/ better OBP. Turner got 1 year and an option, so maybe the option was the problem. At least the O's have their "big bat" now.
but but but... FrAzIeR iS a LeFtY!

The ongoing question I have.... why can't we just get better players?

Waste of money. Maybe 1/2 good years if he can stay on the field.
I told you we'd agree eventually! I would not want him for that deal.

How would you rank these signings from worst to least worst?
- Adam Frazier for $8 million
- Trevor May for $7 million
- Joey Gallo for $11 million
Add in Benintendi for 5 years 75M (yikes).

I give up. They played Odor on a team in a year where they dealt assets to get prospects in August. Are they going to do that again? They also played Odor in front of Vavra, not Bobby Grich.
K. I still have no idea why you think the Orioles would make someone the third highest paid player on the team to not play him (in any event he has been told he is here to play every day).Agree to disagree, I'm sure we'll meet again in another thread (and maybe we'll agree?)

I think teams are leaning on the extreme non-spenders to at least make a pretense of having a payroll.
I remember a few years ago the Rays signing Carlos Gomez (or as my Wisconsin friends say, "Go-Go Gomez" because of a complaint that they weren't spending enough. So there may be something to this.

I don't hate Hill as a low risk signing, but we should be looking for more serious upgrades.

Seems expensive for a reliever with a 5+ ERA last year.
A signing as odd and head-scratching as Frazier. I guess Oakland thinks they can flip him at the deadline.

Anyone who wants to compare 2022 to 2023 I just don’t get. They dealt Trey and Lopez last year.
What indication have you received that 2023 is any different than 2022 with respect to payroll and asset allocation?

They added him because they don’t want to bank on Stowers and Westburg and the rest of the lineup staying healthy/productive all year. He wants depth/options.
Once again. My point is simple. If he does not play well he isn’t playing all the time. Do you think in July if he is struggling he plays everyday?
Again, the Orioles are not paying someone $8M - the second or third highest on their payroll - to eventually not play. Odor kept playing despite sucking, and Frazier makes 8 time what he made...

So what is the argument?
If they don’t add Brantley add nobody?
I don’t get the constant discussion of the money. It makes no sense to me. I don’t care where he ranks on the team payroll. You are a good/smart poster, but I cannot waste my time anymore explaining this to you.
The Orioles budget is X and it should be used on good players and positions of needed. Now it is X - $8M, leaving less money to, hopefully, spend on better players and positions of need. That's all I can say at this point, if my position is not clear, then so be it.

Do you think I don’t want that?
All I am saying is a Brantley is taking at bats away from someone. Elias wanted to add a LH bat. It’s not Brantley it’s Frazier.
I assume you do want that, but Frazier at $8M - second highest on our team - is not that. Not even close.

Slim pickings at 2nd base this year in FA. If the FO thought we needed a 2nd baseman then Frazier was the best of the bunch.
Why waste the $8M though? Just put Urias at second and invest the $8M on a better more useful player.

So in 2024 the Orioles lineup will have
Gunnar
Adley
Mountcastle
Ortiz
Westburg
Cowser
Stowers
Norby
Maybe they can be nice and keep Mullins.
Apparently all these guys will work out and Elias should never add no one to the roster who could take any at bats away.
No, they should be using their limited resources to add BETTER PLAYERS at positions of need (i.e. SP (Eovaldi/Bassitt) and DH (Brantley)). At least for me, it's much more about poor resource allocation.

That money (especially on a restricted budget) should have gone to improve the pitching (eg Eovaldi) or get a hitter in an area of need (eg. Brantley). Instead, he signed a bad player who will now block prospects and likely prohibit additional spending. If we're talking about a spring training invite, or some other cheap, dumpable contract, it's no big deal. For $8M he's going to play a lot and likely be bad. This is like the Odor contract on steroids.
This.

Because they are all cheap and making the minimum, or not far from it.
I don't think you understood the point of my question. Why sign a second baseman when you have significant depth at the position and the position is filled, especially when there are more glaring holes on the team and you (seemingly) have limited resources?

Resident (also) pirates fan here and I have to say that Frazier on a cheap 1 year deal is fantastic. He reminds me of Vavra's ceiling could be.
He knows what he is doing with a bat. He knows how to hit situationally. He brings great energy and he can play a decent 2B. He also has experience in the OF so he can open up options for future personnel moves.
That's all well and good, but why spend $8M on a player when you have Henderson, Mateo, Urias, Westburg, Norby, and Vavra?

Urias for Carrasco now, with Urias platooning with McNeil and playing some third? Really just trying to make this make sense.

If only we had a young left handed hitting player that can be a UTI guy.
Amazing how they can seem so smart with some stuff and so idiotic with others. This makes ZERO sense... this makes the Jake Cave claim from a few weeks ago seem like a brilliant move.

Who cares if there is a corresponding trade? You are loaded with ML ready MIers. You don’t need to sign another one. I don’t even care that Frazier was good in 2021. To me, it doesn’t even matter if he returns to a 2-3 WAR guy. That’s not even the point.
It’s just dumb. It makes no sense. There is no logic behind it. It’s taking money and wiping your ass with it and then lighting it on fire. You could likely have Eovaldi for the same or less that it will cost you to have Frazier and Gibson.
Right. A minor league deal? Sure. One year one million? Don't think it's necessary, but why not? But $8M? That is more than any position player on the team makes... and it's Adam Freaking Frazier.

I don't get it this franchise is schizo. Supposedly limited budget for free agents and you waste $8M on Adam Fraizer? I really want hear Elias' justification for signing an expensive mediocre 2B.
Yup, this. If you want an offensive player, fine, but get an upgrade. Get Brantley, or JD Martinez, or someone that might move the needle. If you have endless funds then sure, sign Frazier. But they don't. This appears to be an awful allocation of limited resources, simply put.

Orioles Sign Three Relievers to MIL Contracts

Bazardo could be a decent middle reliever/replacement for Krehbiel if he struggles.
