The post said "realistic." There's no evidence that Elias is granted permission to sign anyone to contracts approaching the length and value of Bassit or Abreu. This should've been obvious from the start when Roch was talking about most of the increase in payroll coming from arbitration raises.

Realistically, I would've been happy with Syndergaard and JD Martinez. Unfortunately, it seems both took less to play in LA.

If signing Abreu and Bassitt - who are not the top free agents on the market (not even close) is not "realistic" to the Orioles, then the Orioles are more pathetic than we give them credit for.

And both of those options suck. We would be better off with any random waiver claim or current prospect. It’s like he’s making moves to show he knows how to do it.

    Exactly.

Why are we wasting time on the 39th/40th spots on the 40 man roster instead of acquiring players that will actually make a difference in 2023?

Looks like the Orioles are trying to pick up a number of backup 1B options without having them on the 40-man. Diaz bouncing around reminds me a lot of the Hanser Alberto transitions during the 2018-2019 offseason. I expect Diaz to be DFA'ed again this offseason with Elias and company hoping he makes it through waivers this time around.

Maybe this means the Orioles will still try to acquire a decent left-handed bat (or any other-handed bat) to upgrade the offense?

Good points btw regarding the 40 and stashing first baseman in AAA.

Whether the moves work out or not Texas was aggressive.

The Orioles off season has been lazy.

    Yup.  Lazy/cheap/too risk averse.

The Orioles should have beaten their offer for Eovaldi.  The Orioles should have beaten/matched the Jays' offer for Bassitt.  Time will tell.

This I agree with 100%. The core of the best prospects is here and ready to go. It was time to surround them with top tier major league talent. So far, Elias has failed to do so.

This.  Especially with how low the payroll currently is, with Gunnar/Adley/GrayRod making pennies.  It amazes me that people defend the Orioles not adding better players this offseason.

I needed a distraction from the Ryan O'Hearn trade so I decided to come up with a handful of possible marketing slogans for the 2023 Baltimore Orioles. Any others come to mind? cC: Cal Perry

    1) Sorry, but we expected the rebuild to take longer.

    2) Save it for never (sung to the tune of the English Beat's "Save it for Later")

    3) Come see the kids (and below average MLB free agents that we signed) play!

    4) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    5) Hit hard, run fast, spend less.

    6) There's no dollar sign in champion.

I don’t get why they just won’t acquire good players coming off such a promising season.

Just an awful offseason so far and it’s not likely to get better.

This is really the bottom line for me.  It has been a bad offseason because they have been too cheap/lazy/surprised by the market? to add good players, when it seemed like that was the goal this offseason.  Why are they incapable of adding good players?

He said he wanted to acquire a #1 -3 starter via FA or trade.  He also said he wanted to acquire a “platoon type of outfielder”.   Despite all of the craziness on OH, I actually think he does what he says.

I think he wanted to do all of this and ownership reached out to him and was like "um, we are not loosening the purse strings like you may have thought," and Elias has had to change his goals.

Who should have played in his place? Vavra?  He would not be on most peoples projected 26 right now.

Gunnar should have come up earlier, or yea, Vavra should have gotten an opportunity earlier.

Odor was pretty rough, but he did produce some fond memories.

Not really, the Givens and McCann deals received overwhelmingly positive responses.

And while I am probably viewed as a negative nancy, I liked the Gibson signing too.  But I liked it as a depth, end of the rotation move, not a "here is our Lyles replacement, let's ride" move that the Orioles are now trying to sell us on.

Baffling is as good a definition of this offseason as any that I can come up with.

I've been an Orioles fan for 47 years (assuming I knew what being a fan meant around 5) and I'm not sure I've seen a more baffling offseason.

Sometimes you see moves and you think, low cost, no downside, why not give it a look. Then you find out he's actually on a $1.4 million contract which means he's probably got a good chance to make the team.

Remember when they signed Odor and we thought they would just kick the tires and then he ended up the starting second baseman almost all season? Yeah, that was for about half of what O'Hearn will make.

That's exactly it.  Depth moves are fine when you are also doing things to make the team better.  The team does not need to be adding just depth, they need to be adding better players.  People can talk all they want about how the team as constructed is ready to make the playoffs--and maybe they are, and that would be great--but it is equally possible that they overachieved last year, needed a boost this offseason to get to the playoffs, and instead, sat here twiddling their thumbs and watching the Bassitts and Eovaldis pass them by.

This made me laugh. I had never heard of this guy.  Then I looked up his career stats.  Wow.  Definitely has Orioles written all over him.

This is exactly it.  As SG said, the Orioles have "holes to fill" and are doing so, even if the players they are choosing aren't good.  It's baffling and comes off as lazy and cheap.

I'm not even kidding when I say it feels like the other owners are forcing to spend at least X so they are doing their best to hit exactly X with one year deals.

Certainly possible.  I remember hearing something similar when the Rays signed Carlos Gomez out of the blue a few years ago.  Glad we are doing things like the Rays.

Holy smokes. They are going to pay him $1.4 million?

    Good Lord...

Let's see the Optimists (is that an acceptable term) spin this one.

This smells of Odor. He's a guy we think has no role on the team and ends up generally an everyday player while OPSing in the low .600.

This offseason just keeps getting worse and worse. Actually, its becoming quite embarrassing once again.

But I'm sure the Orioles must have an exquisite one of kind evaluations system that has determined this guy will "bounce back".

The Orioles' use of limited funds this offseason has been absolutely baffling.

Ironically, he’s cheaper than O’Hearn, since the Red Sox/Padres are on the hook for his salary for a couple more years.  And, he’s significantly better than O’Hearn, even if he’s grossly overpaid by those teams.   I didn’t want him, but I’d rather have him than O’Hearn.

    Good points.  Agreed.
