I’d be surprised if he started above the GCL.    Almost all high school kids do, including our last 2 no. 1 draft picks.    And we have a couple older shortstops at Aberdeen already.

Good points Frobby.  Will be interesting to see if and when he passes the likes of Carmona, etc.  A wealth of middle infield prospects at the low minors is a nice change from years passed.

I'd have no idea. If he is who we think he is we want him the majors by age 21. He's just turned 18 now. So I'd hope Aberdeen. But maybe GCL.

Gotcha.  I'm excited to see him play.  Really thrilled they were able to sign him, good gamble by Elias.  I'd say Aberdeen for the rest of the year, Delmarva to start next year with possibility of Frederick depending on how he does.

Depends how good they are at that dimension.

Plus, he isn't really one dimensional; that implies that he just hits for power.  However, Mancini has a .364 OBP as well.  I understand the limitatiosn with him at the deadline, but he is an impact bat that will be cheap and controllable for three more years.  That has to have more than negligible value.

Scholarship is tax free.  Bonus will be taxed heavily and agent gets their cut. I guess I am an education first.  Most 18 year old''s will blow whatever money they get.  Sure some save the money but those are probably the same people that are going to college. If you spend you bonus and you are out of baseball at 23 it is going to be hard to beat the guy who went to college. These days the salaries between going to College and not are tremendous.

If he is drafted say after his junior year, he wouldn't get the degree anyway.  Plus, going to Auburn and getting a 4 year education does not guarantee financial success; chances are better that $2M now and signing with a professional baseball team will garner more financial success than that 4 year degree.

This logic is way off base.     The real questions for Henderson are:

    1.    What are the odds he would get a bigger signing bonus if he went to college and waited three years?

    2.    What are the odds he would improve his chances of getting to the majors, and staying there, by going to college instead of starting his pro career at 18?

    3.    How much does he value the opportunity to go to college at 18, as opposed to going later if he wants?

    4.   How much would he enjoy playing college baseball, compared to minor league baseball, over the next three years?

These questions are personal and specific to the player, and there is no one size fits all answer.

As to whether he will blow his money, that’s in his control.     It certainly doesn’t have to happen that way.

    The logic is laughably bad.

In the history of the draft only 6 players picked at 42 have put up 1 WAR.  I think having fun in college while getting an education is the smart move. Auburn us a good college.  Odds are he blows his money and doesn't make the big leagues.

Do you get all warm and fuzzy every time you post something contrarian?  Like, no one thinks you're smarter than the rest of the board for posting contrarian opinions.

Also, the 42nd pick statistic is absolutely meaningless.  He's a teenager with a ton of talent who many predicted would go earlier.

Hess blew Akin's win. I hate when that happens. Too bad someone didn't pick him up.

Eh, I don't think getting the "win" is that important to Akin.  It was a good night, and hopefully he's closer to coming up and starting some games.

What about the fact that Yefry has no track record of success and Straily has some?

They are both gone now.  If the purpose was to intentionally lose as many games as possible, Straily would still be here.

This.  Keeping Strailey over Yefrey was the right move at the time.  Strailey has a track record of success and the hope was he'd pitch well enough to bring something back at the deadline.  I have no problem with Elias keeping Strailey over Ramirez, even though Strailey really struggled and was eventually DFAed.  I care more about the process of making the decision than the actual results of the decision when it comes to something this insignificant.

Can I say no one likes catchers on this forum more than I do?

The catcher's role on a competing or very-soon-to-be-competing team is invaluable.  Both catchers, but especially the starter.

This said, Adley is 22 when P/C report for S/T next season.

The man played football and, correct me if I'm wrong, he caught his whole life.  The latter means you catch a double-header is tough-to-catch pitcher enters game two--or perhaps you catch everything.

His knees will be fine for a while.  I love a big-time offensive catcher who plays great behind the plate.  I am excited to evaluate his receiving, footwork, blocking hips, decision-making, etc.

But when are we going to be ready for contention?  How old will Adley be then?  Approaching 30?

I wouldn't say no to this player either, but I do fear we get the best of him--best case--when we begin to make somewhat of a push.

Leadership can be a big thing.  I've heard people say "such and such is a great leader," but there aren't THAT many GREAT leaders.  If he is a GREAT leader--as suggested from his college stories--that in and of itself at his position is worth it.

And every minute he catches in the minors is a minute he isn't catching where we ultimately need him.

A lot to like, based on anecdotal evidence and the respect I have for Tony, et all.

Of course, by virtue of the position we are in--i.e., worst team and farm on the planet--there is also not a lot to like.

But this is something to like, even if we expected/needed it.

If the rebuild goes as it's supposed to go, I'd say we'll be competing for the playoffs in Adley's 25-26 season onward.   Probably his second season of six with us.

The sell off is what it is. They don't usually go well and I'm not assuming that this one will net out all that good either. However, Diaz and Kremer alone could make it "ok" if they develop. Dumping on either is uninformed.

Villar seems like a solid pick up too, especially if they can turn him into something.  We were all underwhelmed by the Gausman trade, so no surprises there.

Run down the players and none of them have had success this year other than Pop who is having Tommy John surgery I believe.  Dillon Tate has a 6.75 ERA in AA.  Diaz has been awful since he got here. Valera released.   Encarncion .576 OPS in low A.  Brett Cumberland 24 and .673 OPS at Bowie. Evan Phillips 10 era in the majors.  Cody Carroll 26 hasn't pitched this year after getting hammered last year. Josh Rodgers 10 ERA at Norfolk. Ortiz 7.26 ERA at Norfolk.  Carmona hasn't played this year.

On the good side Bannon .738 OPS at Bowie but has been struggling of late.  Bannon ceiling is utility infielder according to mlb.com. Zimmerman 24 is having succss in Bowie this year.  2.94 ERA.

It's been ten months though (and what, four months of actual baseball?).  Everyone on here, including you, knew that we would not be able to fully evaluate the  success of the 2018 sell off until years later.

It's ridiculous because of everything you pointed out, but it's also ridiculous because he didn't get "shelled." He gave up 3 in the first and 1 in the 5th. Nobody had any reports on what happened in the first, but getting hit in the first is common. Having it happen to a guy who's just back from rehab can't be surprising.

Rather than hyperventilating over every start, I say we give the kid 5 minutes to get his legs under him and start his thing again. Tony/Luke listed him as our #3 prospect last year. That's high praise and they know much more than the aforementioned poster.

Agreed.  I think Kremer will be just fine.  The K numbers are there for sure.  I am hoping he is a mid-rotation starter when the Orioles' rebuild has hopefully paid off.

Yeah none of the guys we got will ever contribute. There is no chance any player will turn it around. Those type of things never ever happen

Got shelled again in Bowie.  Appears we got absolutely nothing in trading off Machado, Gausman and Britton. DD will have a hard time ever getting an MLB job once again.

Sorry, but this is such a ridiculous post.  It has been 10 months since the Orioles traded Machado, Gausman, and Britton.  By many accounts, Kremer has looked good, looked good last year, and has had two poor starts in Bowie after missing most of Spring Training.

As Drungo pointed out in another thread, your obsession with being contrarian is growing tired.

It is absurd to suggest that the Orioles got nothing in their trade of TEN MONTHS after the trades happened. ABSURD.

Broxton is the position playing equivalent of an "innings eater." He's a warm body looking for a chance to play most days and prove he belongs in the majors. His greatest value to the Orioles is it allows them to not rush players like Hays to the majors. Elias would probably prefer to not have Hays in Baltimore until September.

I agree with everything in your post and I like your handle a lot. :)

  16. 8 minutes ago, LookinUp said:

I have a feeling this Broxton guy will be given a ton of opportunity in CF this year.

You're probably right, which is fine until Hays is ready.  But Broxton is 29 years old and does not walk a ton.  He appears to be a solid fourth outfield type or a guy that can fill in in a pinch for an injury, but I don't see him as the long-term option (especially not over Hays).  But I agree he will get a long look this year.

I am the one that is objective.  Everyone else is irrational in regards to Mancini.

You're not objective.  You are negative every opportunity you get.  Mancini is a solid player who could net a solid return with his years of control left.

You don't come off as objective when everything you say is negative.  No one is impressed.

Hahaha. That Mancini, he can ONLY play outfield!   Can't let him take at bats away from Davis and Nunez!
