A .290 BAA doesn't cry out elite prospect

It's 30 innings. The last two games or so put his stats in the hurt locker. I think it will take a lot more innings before we have a good idea if he's going to be elite again.

It's a staple of fan boards.   You can't fight it.

When Virginia Tech has had basketball coaching vacancies, dozens of message board fans wanted to bring back some of our previous great players, such as Dell Curry or Bimbo Coles, as head coach, even though neither had ever coached before.   Or they would say Allen Bristow, a great C for the Hokies back in the 70s, who had played, coached, and GMed in the NBA, should be hired, even though he had been retired for years and was about 65.   Or they would pick former VT players who had had a little success a smalltime places like Ron Everhart at Duquesne.

Some of them were disappointed when we hired Buzz Williams, who had led Marquette to the sweet sixteen a couple times.   Around the college basketball world, the hire was considered a home run and now four years in it has worked out very well, our first back to back NCAA Tournament appearances since 85-86.   But he wasn't "one of us" and a lot of fans were disappointed at the time.

I think they should fire Buck and appoint former players as the team manager for a week or so at a time. Not the Cal's though. I would start with Joe Orsulak, then move on to say, umm, Jeffrey Hammonds. Next go with Rocky Coppinger. Coppinger would definitely manage against the Yankees. Maybe Strawberry could throw out the first pitch. You get the idea. I would watch a couple of games just to see the manager.

He has been so outspoken on that topic, that I cannot even imagine it as a possibility.     He’s very soft spoken, but has been very firm on that particular topic.    And he’s just not the type to speak out if he doesn’t truly believe it.

I agree. That was totally, totally in jest. I have a lot of respect for Markakis. Totally a joke.

Lot easier and less pressure hitting HR’s when the game is out of hand and all the pitchers job is to throw strikes. Not saying he shouldn’t try to hit, but late inning HR’s in blowouts aren’t that impressive to me.

Frobby and Glenn_Davis provided the analyses/data. Machado is hitting great when it counts.

I think this “slow market” stuff is just a phase while teams and agents adjust to how players will be valued going forward.    Other than trying to get the lowest price possible, there are good reasons for teams to want to get their team assembled before spring training begins, both in terms of competitive readiness and marketing.

And the Orioles-Cobb experience will probably be a good example for teams and players going forward.

On the surface, maybe. But IMO, hitting HR’s in blowouts is the baseball equivalent to stat padding.

That’s kind of dumb. What’s he supposed to do, hold back? The Orioles have come back from crazy deficits before. Is he supposed to give up? Then you and or others would call him a quitter.

  7. I am pleasantly surprised by the Orioles' move. Nothing against Cortes, but he just couldn't get hitters out. I'm pleasantly surprised because DD seems to drag out these roster crunch decisions as long as humanly possible and then some to avoid giving someone away. It's good to see them make a timely decision in this case. It's mainly shuffling the chairs on the Titanic, but at least it's a decisive shuffling of the chairs.

Why do you think Pedro will end up on another team (other then Norfolk I assume)?

I should have put a qualifier in there. I think he could be a valid left-handed bat off the bench for teams. I have no idea if anyone has a need. If he could play any position even remotely decently, then he would be an interesting pinch hitter option in the NL. But the lack of a position definitely limits who might want him. But he looked pretty good in very limited time last year and has had some very nice at bats this year. I think he can still hit ML pitching.

p.s. But you are probably right...if I had to bet money on it I would bet he ends up in Norfolk.

  9. Pedro Alvarez at DH and Mancini at first looks like a much better option than playing Davis right now. Unfortunately we will get Trumbo back soon and Pedro will probably end up on another team. Pedro would almost certainly have out hit Davis last year.

4-6 was a pretty decent outcome in all honesty.  In the ten games, we saw three teams that were in the postseason last year, including the WS champs.  Additionally, seven of the ten were on the road.  5-5 would have been really strong, but they had a strong finish to avoid a potentially rough (won't quite say disastrous) start.

I agree. I think before the season started the majority of posters would have been ok with a 4-6 start given the opponents. I suspect most of us would have predicted better results for the Twins series, but would have predicted losing the Houston and NY series.
