I think there is zero expectation that Mayo is called up this year so not the urgency to get him more reps at 1B just yet.

    Good point

My guess for the lack of 1B reps is to maintain prospect value.  The theory goes:  Mayo sticking at 3B boosts his marketable value, while playing him at 1B questions if he's 3B material.

Elias should be fairly confident that Mayo will be MLBers at some point in his career.  It's just a matter of whether or not it starts in Baltimore.  I wonder if Mayo will get more reps after the dust settles to reveal who's left from the trade deadline.  (But I've been hoping for more 1B exposure for Mayo, Westburg, Kjerstad, and maybe even Norby for a while.)

    That’s my guess too.

This is a pretty good wrap up. For me, Mayo is so big and going to get bigger, I think he's going to end up too slow for RF in a few years. Personally I think he's the 1B of the future here.

Why do you think the Orioles are not playing him at first much? They stress versatility so much in some players, but then they basically wait until the majors to switch the position of other players. Odd.

Kjerstad played first today and Sunday. Didn’t look farther back, but when I checked about two weeks ago Mayo had played very few games at first despite what some posters seem to think is happening.

Just checked. Mayo has played 12 games at first this year and a whopping 14 in his minor league career. The Orioles are a little weird with positioning, but that doesn’t scream being groomed for first.

Is Mayo playing third or first now?

It’s worth noting that, having run through a gauntlet of pretty tough teams since this thread was started on July 10, the O’s now have only the 17th most difficult schedule remaining, with our upcoming opponents averaging a .497 winning percentage, down from .511 as of the OP.  https://www.tankathon.com/mlb/remaining_schedule_strength

We’re still in the midst of a pretty tough stretch right now, though.

The other AL East teams have a tougher SOS than the Orioles because they have to play the Orioles. What a satisfying situation!

Apparently so. The din of the deniers only deepens as the number of wins above .500 climbs, esp. on the game threads. It's useless to argue with them; during my nearly two decades on the Hangout, I've never had to put so many names on the Ignore list as I do now.

The game threads are so emotional that I only visit a game thread about once a month to read about a specific play that I didn't see. The game threads are definitely not for everyone. I'm too tight while watching a game to even read a game thread must less participate in one.

He had his velocity as a reliever, if I recall. They just seem hell-bent on making him a starter and it's been a pretty obvious case of square peg, round hole for a while now.

He didn’t have his velocity this summer period. He’s messed up. He’s so messed up that he’s not pitching in competitive games at any level. They could really use him in the pen now if he was effective. I am very pessimistic about his future. Such an odd situation.

I'm pretty sure they could still put him in the pen right now (assuming health) and he'd be effective. But the Orioles would rather move mountains on their way to hell and back than stop trying to make DL Hall a starter.

Stop trying to make starter happen. It's never going to happen.

You think they would rather have him in Florida right now instead of the bullpen? I think they would love to have an effective Hall in the bullpen right now. That’s exactly what they need. Hall is very messed up. He would be with the Orioles if he wasn’t.

  10. I don’t ever remember a similar situation. It’s very unusual and I basically now have zero expectations for Hall. Anything the Orioles get out of him will be a pleasant surprise in my opinion.

Are you saying that trade damns the team into sucktitude for 4-5 years after the WS championship?    If so, I strongly disagree.

Also of note the Orioles are spending basically zero money right now. A World Series win would increase income and potentially the Orioles would have a decent amount of cash or at least more cash to supplement the roster that would include all the exciting young players you listed in an earlier post. I think I would do the trade for a guaranteed World Series.

  12. My expectations are low, very low. I think they are focusing more on the long term than the short term, Elias loves having an overflowing cabinet of minor league talent, the Orioles seem to have very little money to spend, and the majority of deadline trades don’t move the needle at all even if you trade for a good player. I think Elias et al take their usual analytical approach to the cost and benefits including with regards to their long term plans and don’t trade for a big name/an expensive player.
