Any reason why Hyde didn't pinch hit for Mateo on Friday night in the 8th, up 3-0 vs RHO with Cowser available to hit and Urias for defense? I believe there was a similar situation with Kjerstad on the bench vs NYY. Does Hyde just value the defense that much with the lead?
That is interesting. Fangraphs "Pitch Type" has him with a curveball, "Pitch Info" calls it a slider. Would that make it a "sweeper"? Either way, he is throwing it more this year, about double compared to last year.
The reasoning was likely that the A team was rested and gives us the best chance to win versus extending Irvin a third time through the order. And again I'm not even saying I agree with it, only that "breathtakingly stupid" is over the top. I would even push back on stupid.
So to be clear your problem was with Coulombe more.so than removing Irvin? Because Hyde also could have extended Cano beyond the 3 pitches he threw if the goal was to save Coulombe. But then you might have Cano restricted today. Using Coulombe back to back takes him away but now literally everyone else is available today. We should be able to get through two games with 7 pitchers. We have an off day on Monday and another on Thursday.
I didn't like it either but I also don't think it was breathtakingly stupid. He had a low pitch count but had gone deep in the game, he had just given up a hard hit ball to Elly, and they had a bunch of RHB's coming up. Cano threw three pitches to get those two extra outs so no big deal.
The way he has pitched this year I might have Povich as out #4 prospect now. With our depth at other positions it is tempting to say he is our most valuable prospect (to the organization) outside of Holliday. No way I am trading him for a rental reliever. Maybe McDermott for Scott?
5/3 3-0 win @ Reds: Nod to Adley for a big timely hit but clear game ball for Irvin. Arguably the best O's start of the year, he made it into the 7th on only 72 pitches. He pounded the zone all night and allowed zero walks (in fact hardly any 3 ball counts). Aside from Elly he no hit the rest of the Reds.
