I can’t say I noticed any failure to repeat his delivery in April and May, but then again, I am terrible at analyzing pitching mechanics.

I agree that minor league success doesn’t guarantee major league success.  But I do think Grayson’s recent AAA performances suggest he’s pitching better than he was when he was called up in April.   I saw him in person and on TV in spring training against some underwhelming lineups and he struggled then, and his one AAA start before his call-up wasn’t very good.   He’s doing much better against that level of competition now.

One other thing, not directed at you but a few of the earlier posts worrying that some of the whiffs shown in the videos were on pitches over the plate.   It’s a myth that major league pitchers have to be perfect and hit the corners on every pitch to be successful.  They just need to do it more of the time than minor league pitchers do.  But plenty of pitches over the plate get swings and misses in the majors.   It depends how they’re moving and how much the batter can lock in on a location.   I can’t watch a whiff highlight video and tell you what pitches a major league hitter would have hit.  Some of them?  Probably.  A lot?  Probably not.

A good friend of mine pitched in AAA for 6 years then started coaching. I heard him answer the same question dozens of times: "What's the difference in a pitcher who's successful in AAA vs MLB?" "Consistency. Lot's of guys have great stuff. How often can you do it?"

We gonna stop acting like this is the United Nations and talk some baseball instead or what?

You'd rather the posts about what a disappointment Adley is?

  3. I noticed an interview a few days ago when he was asked the difference in his play from NY to the O's, he repeated playing time several times.

I question if he won't encourage a trade when he's not in the lineup everyday. That may not mean much, but Hicks being traded this month is very much in play, IMO.

In a similar vein to what @sportsfan8703 posted about a SP/RP package with the Cards, here are some other teams in a 'traditional sellers' demographic who could help both roles.  I didn't include some who I think they won't trade.

    Cards:  Montgomery/Flaherty and Hicks/Gallegos/Stratton

Cubs:  Stroman/Hendricks and Fulmer/Leiter/Merryweather - Leiter/Merryweather are under team control but have checkered history.

    Rockies:  Freeland and Suter/Lawrence/Hand

Pirates:  Hill and Bednar/Ramirez,/Holderman/Moreta - All of the RPs is under team control and would be more costly.  I don't think the Pirates will trade Keller because they are close to competing.  If Cruz would have stayed healthy this year, it might have been this year.

    Red Sox:  Sales/Paxton and Jansen/Martin - Sales/Jansen/Martin are through 2024.

White Sox:  Cease/Gio/Kopech and Graverman/Middleton - Cease/Graverman are under team control and Kopech has a shoulder issue.

Tigers:  ERod/Lorenzen and Lange/Cisnero - Lange is under team control.

Angels:  Ohtani/Sandoval and Esteves/Loup/Barria - No comment on Ohtani, but keep in touch with his market.  Sandoval/Esteves/Barria all have various levels of team control.

Padres:  Lugo/Snell/Wacha and Hader/Martinez/Honeywell/Garcia - Matinez/Honeywell has some team control.  They've stated they aren't selling, but we'll see...

On paper, I don't think the Mariners will trade an SP.  But DiPoto's a bit of a wildcard...  Maybe he'll eat some of Castillo's contract.

Teams that fit the "seller" criteria but I doubt the O's interest in their players/cost:  Royals, Athletics, Nationals.

Thanks for taking the time to gather all of this.

Kyle Freeland is a local kid for COL and it doesn't look like they'll consider trading him. My guess is someone overpays for ERod so that knocks us out there. Montgomery feels like a fit for us. Personally I don't think we add a rental even if the prospect cost is really low but if we do, Lance Lynn might be a target. He's having a lousy year this year but maybe they've spotted a correction he could make.

Well I’m not sure if the guys info is accurate. I asked him to clarify but I have been asking if anything changed after the injury last year.

He's the only person who's mentioned an arm slot change too, isn't he?

Waiting for hype video (or lack thereof) and uniform number tea leaves.

I think he's solid, but guess it is not inconceivable with Hays nicked and the mid-series circumstance it could be a Drew Rom type situation.

    17, good sign.

I actually meant to point that out, yeah but keep having to go back and forth to work stuff and didn't realize that I hadn't. Good catch and fair criticism of my observation. It wasn't intentional and I certainly am not out to poopoo on the number 1 prospect in baseball. I wouldn't say that he was throwing off-balance though. I mentioned that he squared his shoulders to first just fine.

The sliding foot is what it is. He slipped a little but in truth, on that play I'd like to see him come in on the ball more than letting it play him into the hole. With time and reps and focus on his profession he's going to recognize those plays and be better at making them. He's 19. Who he is today is not who he is going to be in two years or five years.

I sourced that video 1. because it was the first one that came up in a google search and 2. to show that he isn't exceptionally quick to the ball right now and his throwing motion is a bit long. Both are areas that will improve as he gets more time in his profession and advances through the system.

Can't agree with your conclusions at all. To watch that play and argue he's not quick to the ball, or that his throwing motion is too long, I can't agree at all and I'd be surprised if many other people did either.

I don't see JJ Hardy in Jackson Holliday. To be honest, I'm not sure who he looks like at SS. He kind of reminds me a little bit of Adam Frazier. So, there's that.

At about 38 seconds in the above video you can see what I mean about going to the hand-side. He makes the throw and actually records the out but I'd be curious to know what the runner's sprint speed was on the play. It looked like it took him close to 5 seconds to get down the line as a left-handed hitter, which ain't good. He makes contact at 38 seconds and his foot is on the bag at 43 seconds. I'd guess it's something like 4.8 from contact to the bag, which would put him somewhere in Nelson Cruz/Trey Mancini territory. So, not exactly a burner.

Holliday's footwork on the play is solid yet unremarkable but you can also see on that play that he doesn't appear to be exceptionally quick to a ball that two-hopped him waist-high. His throwing motion is a bit longer than you want for a middle infielder, especially for a SS but that's partially due to his lack of arm strength. He has to be a little long to generate throwing power. You can see that he does square his shoulders to first to make the throw (which actually reminds me a little bit of Cal/Tom Emanski) but I would like to see a quicker exchange from my SS.

Yes, it's one play and he was shaded up the middle. Some of what is needed to improve is his age of course and professional baseball will drill the muscle memory and instincts into him. His calling card is his bat, which probably plays right now at the Major League level. Can he improve and stay at SS? Certainly and I hope that he does. I really do. As he matures physically and mechanically he's going to get better. The sky is literally the limit for him as a prospect but I just personally see him better suited for 2B if he remains in the infield.

If we look at how they've managed personnel since Elias took over they have stock piled valuable middle infielders. Urias was signed as a SS. Gunnar drafted as a SS. Mateo claimed as a SS. JW drafted as a SS. Ortiz drafted as a SS. Hernaiz drafted as a SS. Prieto signed as a 2B. Norby drafted as a 2B. Bencosme signed as a SS. Holliday drafted as a SS. Maikol Hernandez signed as a SS. Luis Arias signed as a SS. Carter Young drafted as a SS.

In college baseball teams will take as many middle infielders as they can because they are typically the more skilled players overall and it's an easier transition for them to move to other positions. That's clearly been Elias and Co.'s strategy with drafting and signing guys.

Are you going to mention that his plant foot was skidding and he was throwing off balance? Or do you call that poor footwork?

They should at some point bring up the rookies. If not for this season, next. I'm not giving up hope on 23 yet, but the team has been fairly pedestrian over the last 36 games.

No need to give up on '23.

AL East Last 20 games: Rays 10-10 Orioles 11-9 Yankees 9-11 Blue Jays 9-11 Red Sox 11-9

He can only play SS with any degree of certainty. I'm not saying release him for nothing, but the occasional steal doesn't offset how bad he's been at the plate. I'm afraid the only way that they won't put him in the lineup is if he's not on the team.

It sure looked like they were headed to platooning him with Frazier with Westburg switching from 2B to 3B until Westburg got hit.

That's not limiting enough....but it's a step in the right direction.

I’m pretty satisfied with our liftoff to date.  We’re on pace to win 13-14 more games than last year.

I’m sure everyone here has watched an actual liftoff on TV.   Does the rocket reach maximum speed five seconds after the countdown ends?   No, it doesn’t.

I'm not disappointed in the pace at all and I think Elias is well satisfied with where we sit today.

I think his target is more October '24 than this year. And I don't disagree with that approach.

I ain't been shown to be wrong about this yet.

    Hopefully I will be.

I wonder how many of the posters here that are claiming Angelos rug pulled Elias are the same folks that said he'd never take the job without assurances that he'd be able to run things and have the needed resources?

Do you think he took the job without assurances he'd be able to run things and have the needed resources?

Elias has repeatedly said that the money is there to spend when he thinks the team is ready to compete.

    Is he lying?

He also flew to Texas immediately after last deadline and talked about "liftoff".

Elias is disciplined and measured in everything he does. He has a boss that repeatedly promised to "open the books" and then didn't.

I think Elias believed what he said when he said it. Both about "there is money there when it's time" and about "liftoff". I think he believed what he was being told at the time.

Based on what we've seen from Elias over the last few years and what we've seen from John Angelos, do you think Elias was lying?

  15. I think wildcard is pretty close here. I don't share quite as much unbridled enthusiasm but looking at it from a standpoint that Elias must be pleased with year over year progress the last 2, and knowing he has a lot more coming next year, I can't see a lot of prospects traded in the next 30 days.

I think he does have to look at it from the Tampa perspective over the last few years where they needed to move some prospects because they would become Rule 5 targets if they remained with the organization but that still lets him keep the names prominently floated here over the last year. Obviously it depends on who brings back what kind of value but I think how you would set the 40 man come Rule 5 draft dictates who is traded this month.

I think we wind up adding 1-2 MLB relief pitcher(s) that aren't one of the big names. Depending on what analytics show them, and what they think they can do to help someone, I would expect more Pierce Johnson (not a name) than Scott Barlow (name) as an example.

As many others mention, I think one of Ortiz/Mateo is a bridge to Holliday. I would think Ortiz has much greater trade value so even though I really believe in him, I think he's gone come Aug 1.

If you can get decent value, I'd like to see Mountcastle and McKenna traded. If you trade Mountcastle, I can't see Urias traded this month. I'd love to see a value return for Mateo but I just don't believe it'll happen.

Wildcard has more faith in Voth than I do but I'm optimistic by nature so I'll hope along with him. I tend to think Rodriguez needs more time than another month to reign in his command. Maybe Charles helps by late August.

I don't see any way we're seriously in on a Corbin Burnes or Cease or that caliber. I tend to think we add one starter but I don't see Elias dealing more than 1-2 of our top 10 prospects to do so. And I can't see him dealing any significant prospect for a rental. He'll be looking for 2+ years of control I'd guess.

I'm anxious to see what Elias does, although I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's not much.

But to your point, it appears that there will be a platoon right now between Mateo and Frazier. Against RHP Frazier will start at 2B and against LHP Mateo will start at SS. Henderson and Westburg will be the constants while changing positions.

That's what I've been hoping for, Frazier and Mateo job share. I think Westburg gets one game a week off but otherwise, I hope they play Westburg at 2nd and 3rd and move Henderson between SS and 3B.

Mountcastle to the Phillies makes a ton of sense.  They need RH bats, 1B help.  Big change of scenery play and a park better suited for RH pull power.  Probably regret this trade but Os have depth and ultimately plenty of options to enable this type of trade.  Not sure who you get back.  This would also create a path for Westburg to be RHH INF at 1B/2B/SS/3B.  IMO decision comes down to who is better RHH Westburg or Mountcastle and who provides more defensive flexibility/upside.

Houston needs a 1st baseman badly.

I'm not against bringing the kids up, not at all. I would be against them half-assing it and giving sporadic playtime. If they aren't serious about letting them develop this year and potentially punting the season if they all struggle initially then I'd rather they get everyday reps in the minors. If they are serious about playing them, then trade the people you think they'll replace and live with whatever happens in the standings during the ML adjustment they will likely face.

This is where I am too. It seems clear that this is not a year to push all the chips to the center of the table. It's yet another step in the growth of the organization. With that in mind, I'd love to see Ortiz and Westburg playing every day with the O's, even if their growing pains cost us a few games.

If, however, there's some legitimate area of weakness that needs work at Norfolk, I wish someone would explain what that is. But given that they're fine with Ortiz sitting on a MLB bench, that certainly doesn't seem to be the case with him.
