I hated the pick but I'm not going to take a victory lap over some kids misfortune.

First off, not celebrating just pointing out the approach is stupid when you are fielding an atrocious product to the fans of Baltimore. Take the BPA!

Do some research. Look at the interview of Kjerstad after his pick. He was surprised the Os took him. They had limited contact with him.

One would move to first base I'm sure so it's not like they would have one as a backup. I wouldn't be thrilled with drafting another catcher so high unless their are lingering concerns about Rutschman's shoulder and it's affect on his throwing.

I will say, Rutschman looks very smooth at 1B for a guy with limited experience there.

Davis does not project as a major league catcher. He would likely play a corner OF spot.

After reading a bit, I’m wondering why we should take House, who is a high risk 45 FV. Or did I read that wrong. Either first base or OF when we already have plenty of those? Why not take Lawler, who sounds like just exactly what we need?

Not excited by House either for exact reasons you articulated.. He would be an underslot which we know Elias loves so prepare yourself for disappointment.

Martin was overrated in my opinion.  Good player but if he doesnt hit for power and can’t stay at SS, not only would I have preferred Kjerstad, I would have also preferred Gonzalez and Veen(Veen is who I wish they picked).

Either way, it’s very possible the Os had Kjerstad rated ahead of Martin.

Mayer was the pitcher to take if they were taking one.

    I loved Gonzalez!

Elias' rhetoric seems to indicate that he wants to go for broke by around 2023 or so.  This tells me that he would need a pretty sizeable haul to part with either Mancini or Santander.  I don't really know if I agree with this take.   I think it's defensible, especially in light of the fact that Elias is not on an infinite duration contract, but I think it's not really the right way to approach the O's rebuilding at this point, because it requires a bit more from our top prospects than I think they can give, plus quite a bit of performance from unknown sources.  Maybe he can turn into Dan Duquette and find a way to turn rocks into Nate McLouth, but he hasn't really shown a propensity for that sort of dealing in the past, so I'm not all that hopeful.

No, he doesn’t have a history of that which is important. I think we will be “rebuilding” until Angelos passes.

I think the question here is, "are the Orioles a contender with Rutschman, Grayson Rodriguez, and DL Hall living up to expectations?"

If the answer is no, then you absolutely try and trade this season.  If the answer is any degree of yes, then your willingness to trade him is dependent on whether you think the return will be a major league contributor in next 2 years.

My first inclination here was that you should keep him unless you get a monster haul, but I'm thinking it over more carefully, and I wonder if we are actually going to be contenders even if all three of the above prospects hit their ceilings.  That's maybe 15 wins added, 20 if they really knock everyone's socks off.  But the Orioles are basically a 60-65 win team, and even 20 more wins isn't going to move the needle enough.  I think if the Orioles were a 65-70 win team, it would be a drastically different story.  But we're not and we have holes all over the diamond.

Terrific post. What do you think Elias thinks? I think trading Mancini would be horrific. Love that guy, we all do! Davis didn’t have some great connection. If it slows down the rebuild, frankly I am okay with that because at the end of the day we are watching a sport for fun. Need another title, 83 so long ago, but there is a human element too.

If you believe Davis is clearly the best player available, you take him.   You can always trade him later for something else you need.    That said, if there’s another player you like just about as well, you take that other guy.   By the way, in the Fangraphs mock they listed Davis in the Orioles spot but then described all the reasons they probably wouldn’t take him.

EL: We have Davis’ name here because, in this scenario, he’d just be too strong a value to pass on. But the general sense from teams picking behind Baltimore is that they’d like to cut a high school bat. Mike Elias has usurped A.J. Preller as the GM scouts are most likely to eyeball at games, and this spring that has included House, Watson (whose name is mentioned at two, and then from here onward), Sal Frelick and Colton Cowser.

KG: When you have the best catching prospect in baseball, it feels a bit foolish to select Davis, but he’d be too hard to pass up at number five, and could move to first base or a corner outfield slot to just focus on the offensive ability. Plenty still think they’ll play it similarly to last year and cut a deal with an 8-15 range talent.

Honestly I am cool with Davis if they believe in his bat that much. But there are 4 must drafts, will at least one fall? Likely. Gotta get 1! Don’t underslot it! We need stars!

Leiter, Davis, Lawyer & Mayer. House too if they like him. Need a good SS!

Why do we want another first round catcher? That doesn’t work. You’ve got to have a catcher who is clearly better and a catcher who is clearly not as good. No team has a first round catcher as their back up. Not only is it a waste of resources, but the back up is going to scream that he’s a first rounder and should be starting.

He's not really a catcher. You are drafting a bat. From what I have read, he likely would be a corner OFer or 1b. You are convinced he is a super plus bat which doesn't excite me. Much rather build around a SS (Mayer/Lawyer) or a stud SP like Leiter. But from all I have read, he is a very good bat. Haven't seen him play.

  9. It sounds like he is going to go underslot again and I am not a fan of that approach at all. There are some really good pitchers and SS's available. If Leiter is available (unlikely), I would absolutely be disappointed if we didn't pick him. Also Jordan Lawler and Marcelo Mayer seems like studs. Brady House was tired to the O's previously. Henry Davis is sky-rocketing up draft boards as well.

The most recent mock had O's taking Sal Frelick, an OFer from BC which doesn't seem like a top 5 by collective mocks but we all know a mock is just a mock.

To me, you can't pass on Leiter, Lawler or Lawler.

Not sure why you felt a need to add that.  I haven't been ripping him for being ill.

The strawman is a common tactic on here I noticed. If you don’t like an Elias’ pick, you must be critical of him personally, wishing him ill will or don’t want the Orioles to succeed. None of which is true on my part and but very upset with that selection at the time it occurred and still don’t like it.

What worries me is this year’s draft or next. Are you confident he will take Greene in 2022 with the first pick? I’d hope so but…and this year many mocks for us going underslot again which I am not a fan of with some real good players available.
