The Rochester Red Wings jumped out to an early lead and got a strong performance from three pitchers in a 6-2 win over the Tides Friday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides led 2-1 after the first frame but couldn’t push across another run the rest of the night against David Hurlbut (3-3) and a pair of relievers. Hurlbut yielded five hits over his first eight batters faced, but he settled in to retire 14 of the next 15 batters to help Rochester capture the opening game of the three-game set. Hurlbut struck out two without walking a batter, throwing 58 of his 86 pitches for strikes.

Norfolk starter Jordan Kipper (2-1) suffered his first Triple-A loss, as he yielded six runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out four, and ran into some tough luck in the third inning when he yielded five hits – three of which were of the infield variety. Through five starts with Norfolk since being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, the TCU product now owns a 4.26 ERA.

David Washington had an RBI double for Norfolk, while Johnny Giavotella doubled and scored a run. Giavotella has now reached base safely in 19 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the International League.

With the loss, Norfolk has now dropped six of its last seven games.

Trailing 7-3, the Baysox tied things at seven apiece with a four-run seventh and all four runs in the inning came with two outs. Three singles loaded the bases before Wynns plated a pair with a two-run single, a run scored on a wild pitch and throwing error charged to Curve C Jin-De Jhang and Stevie Wilkersonbeat out an infield single to knock home a run.

The four runs were charged to LHP Jared Lakind (1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 K).

Wilkerson’s three-run shot in the fourth put the Baysox on the board and opened up a 3-0 lead. The home run was Wilkerson’s fourth of the season and his second in as many nights.

Curve starter Yeudy Garcia (n/d) surrendered the three runs on six hits while walking three and fanning five in five innings of work.

Altoona tied things at three apiece with a three-run fifth as Pablo Reyesdelivered an RBI double in the inning and Kevin Kramer came through with an RBI single to score Reyes.

Jerrick Suiter’s three-run homer off of RHP Miguel Castro in the top of the sixth gave the Curve a 6-3 advantage for the time being.

Six of the seven Altoona runs were charged to Castro (4.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 2 K).

Kramer’s sac fly in the top of the seventh plated Kevin Newman and opened up a 7-3 lead for the visitors.

The Frederick Keys (24-29) saw their losing streak extend to five games as the Salem Red Sox posted a 6-3 win on Friday night at Haley Toyota Field. Salem has won of its last four against the Keys and can go for the sweep on Saturday.

For the second straight game, the home team turned in a multi-run first inning. With one out Chad de La Guerra singled off Ofelky Peralta. De La Guerra then stole second, while Michael Chavis reached on an error by Ricardo Andujar at third. From there the Sox got an RBI double by Josh Ockimey, a sac-fly by Trenton Kemp and an RBI single by Mike Meyers to go up 3-0.

The Keys scored single markers in the second and fourth to move within a run.Ademar Rifaela singled off Daniel Gonzalez and moved to second on a wild pitch, before Yermin Mercedes doubled down the leftfield line to get the Keys on the board. In the fourth, Randolph Gassaway doubled and reached third on an error by Meyers in left before scoring on a groundout by Rifaela.

However the Red Sox answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Both were unearned against Peralta (0-3) after a two-out error continued the inning. With men at the corners, Ockimey and Kemp collected RBI singles to make it 5-2. In the game, the Keys committed a season-high four errors.

Due to these miscues only one of the five runs against Peralta was earned. In 4.1 innings the right-hander allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out five in a losing effort.

Gonzalez (2-0) picked up the victory and a quality start, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Rifaela completed Frederick’s scoring in the sixth with a solo home run to right-center. The Curacao native finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jordan Weems and Gerson Bautista pitched the final three innings for the Red Sox, while Bautista struck out the side in the ninth to record his third save.

Palmeiro homers for fourth time this week; Delmarva outlasts Hickory 6-5

SALISBURY, MD - Cole Billingsley belted a walk-off double to deep right in the bottom of the 12th inning, lifting the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 6-5 win over the Hickory Crawdads on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Alejandro Juvier and Ryan McKenna drew consecutive four-pitch walks from Reid Anderson, putting the winning run in scoring position. Billingsley then came up and socked a 1-2 pitch to deep right. Jose Almonte was playing in on the ball, sprinted back, and lost it in the lights as it fell harmlessly to the warning track. Juvier came around with the winning run and the Shorebirds (23-30) came out to mob Billingsley, four days removed from his 23rd birthday, behind third base.

Steven Klimek (3-1) earned the win in relief for Delmarva after pitching a scoreless 11th and 12th, giving up one hit and striking out two. Anderson (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Crawdads (0-2) after serving up the winning run and walking three in 2.1 innings.

Delmarva got on the board in the first inning for the second straight night. McKenna led off with a walk and Billingsley singled, extending his season-best hitting streak to eight games. After a Chris Clare forceout, Preston Palmeiro grounded one to second base, chasing home McKenna to make it 1-0.

The Crawdads tied it in the top of the second without the benefit of a hit. Ti’Quan Forbes took a pitch off the left hip and Ricardo Valencia walked. A wild pitch moved Forbes up to third, and Carlos Garay hit into an around-the-horn double play to chase home the tying run.

The Shorebirds struck back fiercely in their half of the second. Collin Woody slugged the first pitch to left for a leadoff double and scored two batters later on Daniel Fajardo’s two-sacker. Juvier made it three doubles in the inning, hustling into second base as Fajardo crossed the plate. After a wild pitch, Juvier scored on a McKenna sac fly, putting Delmarva up 4-1.

Hickory whittled away at the lead in the fifth as Garay doubled, Almonte tripled, and Miguel Aparicio grounded out to first, producing two runs. In the top of the sixth, Yanio Perez and Forbes managed back-to-back two-out singles, bringing up Valencia. Valencia hit a sharp single to center that brought around Perez. Palmeiro cut off the throw from center and tried to get Forbes at third base but threw it wild, allowing Forbes to scamper home with the go-ahead run, putting the Crawdads up 5-4.

Palmeiro got redemption in the ‘Birds’ half of the sixth, belting a game-tying solo home run just over the wall in left center. It was Palmeiro’s seventh home run of the season, fourth of the week, and first at home.

The pitching would buckle down from there and send the game forward without a run for five full innings. Both starters pitched into the seventh inning. For Delmarva, Lucas Humpal went a full seven for the third straight start, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. He now leads the SAL with 65.1 innings pitched. For Hickory, Matt Ball overcame a shaky start to last 6.1 frames, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out eight.

Matt Trowbridge took the baton from Humpal and went three scoreless innings, retiring the first eight to face him before a Yeyson Yrizarri single in the 10th. Kaleb Fontenot came in for Ball in the seventh and posted 2.2 scoreless himself.

Billingsley finished the game 2-for-6 with the game-winning double and RBI. Palmeiro went 1-for-5 with two RBIs; he has driven in 16 runs in his last 18 games.

Garay went 2-for-5 with a double and run to lead the Crawdads, while Forbes scored twice.

At 12 innings, this was the second-longest game the Shorebirds have played this season and their third extra-inning game overall. Delmarva is now 4-7 in walk-off decisions this season. The Shorebirds have won seven out of their last 10.
