Holliday didn't see a lot 91 mph changeups in the minors. That call that made it 2-2 instead of 3-1 turned the tide of the while inning.

Well, if 2024 is any indication, not really. While he did take a college arm in the 4th round, 5 of his first 6 picks (through round 5) were college hitters. That tells me 2023 was a a bit of a mirage. The difference in his drafting this year is he was able to draft and sign 4 high school hitters including Layton in the 6th round. But besides that, he used 10 selections between the 7th and 20th round on college arms which is going back to the way they drafted in his 2019-2022 drafts. It appears to me that he doubled down in his strategy this year of going college bat heavy with his high draft capital. Hopefully it works, but it's going to be hard to sustain two-three prospects for one pitcher trades without hitting on some good young pitching. Maybe Forret or Morfe will be that guy next year. If Burnes does not resign with the Orioles, it's going to be tough for the Orioles to match up for impact pitcher trades without trading one of the big 3 and even then, teams will probably still want some pitching back.

You hit all on the head here. Unfortunately some get upset if you question anything about Elias and some just will never get it and twist things around. Absolutely drafting college bats in the first round has worked out incredibly for Elias. He clearly showed that he was able to identify collage bats in the 1st round, especially with a top 5 pick.

If they are not going to start him, send him back to AAA and bring up Soto. Can't bring up a top 15 prospects in all of baseball and treat him like Tarin Vavra. Let him get every day at bats down there and for the love of God, if you don't trust him at 3B, either play him there every day down in AAA until you do, or move him to 1B or better yet, start really seeing if he can move to RF.

This makes no sense to me. How are position players supposed to generate the WAR if they play the same positions? If there is no pitching coming up, he'll need to trade for it and I've shown, whether you want to agree or not, that his selections of college hitters after the 1st round is not spectacular and if you are going to put all your eggs in one basket, you better be extraordinary at drafting them. It's not as cut and dry and simple as you make it sound. Every impact pitcher acquired needed pitching to be included. Burnes included DL Hall (Rajsich drafted) and Eflin required Baumeister (Last year's 2nd round pick). Literally the addition of Baumeister proves my point. You have draft pitchers in there to get impact pitching back. If Elias continues to ignore college arms until the 4th round or later, he's missing out those impact arms that could potentially get the impact major league pitching they will need.

I picked one person to start the conversation, not one guy to prove a point. I've made that abundantly clear in the many posts that I've made in this thread and in others on the board. Of course most players will be busts, that's the way all of this works. What I've shown is that "strategy" is not sustainable, and it still took pitching to get impact starting pitching back. The whole point is that you have to mix it up more and not just pick college hitter after college hitter, especially when the upside or ceiling was low, like it was with Williams. I'm sure the Orioles did a study that suggests college hitters have the best chance to produce WAR, but that should not stop the team from taking more chances on pitching. This team is ready to compete with positions players at the major league level for 4-6 years, but the pitching side is going to need more guys to pop out of the Latin American market or they are going to use more draft capital to draft pitchers with high upsides.

I realize that most of these guys will not make it regardless of whether they are pitchers or hitters. That strategy ending up getting us Eflin. Would we have gotten Eflin if they didn't draft Baumeister in the second round? I do worry that the Orioles are just not very good at evaluating amateur pitchers. Even the guys they acquired in the trades (outside of Bradish and Cano) have not exactly been impactful for the Orioles over the last two years.

I love the trade, but Reilly is not the same age, he's 14 months older. The Orioles selected Levi Wells in the 4th round instead of Reilly. Reilly is a fastball (92-95), slider, cutter guy who really doesn't have much of a changeup right now. Baumeister has a little more upside with four pitches and while his command is not great, I think he has a better chance of sticking as a starter. Saying that, they would not be that far apart on the prospect list.

You need to go back and reread my posts instead of shaking your Elias pom poms. I've said all along Ortiz was a great pick. Go look at the players Stowers and Norby were selected over. Both are defensively challenged. This ENTIRE time I've been talking about his college hitters strategy after the 1st round so Gunnar and Mayo don't count. I even said he should draft more high school hitters because of his success in drafting them. You need to take a deep breath, and reread my posts slowly so you don't miss out because you seem like you are such a hurry to defend Elias that you are literally missing my entire points.

No kidding. I'm really surprised they pushed Arias and Sosa to Aberdeen when they've been really scuffling in Delmarva lately. Maybe its just until the 2024 guys are ready for Aberdeen.

I thought Roberts was actually much better this year then in years past where he was ok, but seemed a little passive. Roberts might actually be a good backup to Ben when Palmer finally retires. Not a super fan of three man booths, but they were pretty good together overall.

That's a bit of stretch for me. I'm not saying that he might not end up better, but if I had to have one I'd still take Baumeister today.

Yeah, I probably should have said 3rd-5th round. Most of the 2nd round picks have had some upside to them, they just have not worked out, though Horvath helping to get Eflin makes that pick worthwhile.

It's not for me. He's still hitting the ball hard and has been getting on base frequently. I like that he's been willing to go the other way once again too. His power is there and he'll go on another tear soon.

Absolutely. Morfe just blew onto the scene with that high 90s heat, but he's also 18-years old and we don't know how he will hold up past 60 pitches so we do have to cool the jest a little on him until he crosses those threshholds. Saying that, I would still have him ranked over Baumeister, who honestly did not overly impress me during my looks of him.

100% that's there thought process, but I'm showing very clearly that it's not going to work moving forward when they are drafting later in the drafts. They can't keep going to the college hitter well because they are not hitting enough to justify keeping that philosophy. Some of Elias best draft picks have been high school hitters and in fact, every single one he's drafted and signed prior to this year's draft, besides Creed Willems, have made it to the majors (Henderson, Hernaiz, Holliday, and Mayo). That's why I was happy to see Layton and the later HS picks in this draft. Give me the upside of a Layton over a Douglas Hodo in the 6th round. I just think he needs to spend more 2nd through 5th round picks on college arms with some upside. Sure, most are going to miss, just like most hitters are going to miss in those 2nd - 5th rounds, but if they need those upside arms because typically teams want some pitching back for starting pitching. The Rogers trade was the only starting pitching trade that did not require pitching going back.

They typically do, which is another reason to draft more guys with pedigree of being a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I don't think Tamp trade Eflin without getting back a 2nd round pitching prospect. Who's the Baumeister now? Maybe Forret? Morfe?

They either have to convert Mayo to RF or resign Santander if they want to move on from Kjerstad. I think they are going to hope Kjerstad can improve defensively like Santander did at the major league level.
