  1. It will be interesting to see what he looks like next year. Right now, he's hitting the ball on the ground way too much including when he hit .463 with Delmarva (53.2% GB rate). I'm not surprised he's having to adjust a bit to High-A pitching because he was mostly ambushing Low-A first pitch fastballs. Now the real adjustments start.
  2. True, but that won't be needed when the shift is abolished next year.
  3. I've been saying for awhile that Vavra's plate discipline is excellent and he's great linedrive hitter, particularly the other way. You have to be impressed with his ability to not swing at borderline pitches that are balls even with two strikes. Very impressive. Now, pitchers will start challenging him inside and that will be his test. Can he get to good velocity in on the hands? I've seen him pull the ball, but he's definitely very comfortable hitting balls middle and middle-away to the opposite field on a line. The bigger concern is the Orioles do not seem to think he can play a major league second base. Now, I do think he's probably a below average defender overall at 2B, but I also believe his on base skills will offset that and he should be playing over Odor who brings little to the field consistently. I'm glad to see him getting PAs against right-handed pitching. I haven't really seen him challenged enough in the outfield in the minors so I can't really say how good he is out there yet, but 4th outfielder type might be his calling eventually. Personally, I'd like to see him at 2B the rest of the season to see how he does. Last year the Orioles weren't even willing to give Mateo everyday PAs at SS but once they did l=he settled in quite well. Now Vavra does not have nearly the defensive tools as Mateo, but he was yanked around defensively between OF and 2B in AAA instead of focusing on 2B where he brought the most value, so who knows how good he could be if he was actually being developed as a second baseman. Vavra seems like one of those guys that Elias would move in the right deal since they don't seem to like him in any position primarily.
  4. The more you watch Ortiz this year I can see why guys like him. He's very balanced at the plate, doesn't seemed overwhelmed by any pitch, and is showing power to all fields. Defensively he's the best defender at SS and 2B in the system (minus Holliday since I haven't seen him). Is it possible he's the best behind those 4, possibly, but I'm not ready to do say that yet. Law was on Ortiz earlier than some others, including me and until he started hitting in July, I was starting to think he was a spring training mirage. So let's see how he does once he hits AAA. I need to watch him specifically against good velocity but I haven't noticed him getting overwhelmed.
  5. Every time I see someone say this I have to bite my tongue! Agree though, she's good as the studio host.
  6. There's the "I got no plan or understanding what the pitcher is going to try and do to me" Diaz that I've seen in the minors.
  7. Good Lord, what kind of announcing is this. Kid is making his major league debut and it's two pitches n before Melanie notices.
  8. Vavra has really had good professional PAs since coming up. He really doesn't swing at anything not a strike.
  9. Good enough from what I've seen, but I'll admit I haven't seen him challenged very much out there.
  10. Would be a good game to give Diaz his major league debut!
  11. Good thing Odor's Veteranosity allowed the players to score 6 runs.
  12. Not even close. Ortiz has a much better arm and more range and better hands. Henaiz will be at 2B or the outfield.
  13. An absolute bomb. 107 EV off the bat as well. Big boy home run there.
  14. Let me tell you what, Palmer can not track flyballs from that angle they are at!

  16. Vavra is he DH today. Odor starts at 2B once again. The one thing is clear, the Orioles hate Vavra's defense at 2B.
  17. Because neither one of them can hit and they're both 4th/5th outfielders at best? Vavra should be getting everyday PAs against right-handers, not Phillips.
  18. Finally makes a little sense. Elias never forget the guys he drafted no matter how bad they play. Seriously, I don't really get this. I guess McKenna of Diaz go down? Seems like Elias is trying to control Stowers clock.
  19. No, it means you move him while his stock is at his highest for the most you can get. That's what Elias did. If Povich bombs and none of the other guys work out, then you can say they didn't pick the right guys, but without video scouting any of these guys yet, it looks like enough promise for me for a guy with about 56 innings of quality relief work under his belt. Personally, I think Elias showed he can build a bullpen from the scraps of other organizations and by converting the right starters to relievers. Who says he can't find another Lopez? Who says he doesn't already have him in the organization?
  20. Not bagging on anyone's opinion, but I have no idea who Doolittle is unless he talks to animals. Saying that, I'd have to 100% disagree with his statement. Elias is building a franchise that will compete year after year in the future. Trying to get some kind of wildcard this year is a bonus! Besides, take away the human aspect of everyone rightfully loving Mancini, he's a DH with a .750 OPS who has hit 10 home runs this year. Now they traded their closer but have Bautista waiting to take his spot. Vavra will now get regular PAs vs righties and they can take a look at Diaz vs lefties (I'd still prefer Stowers in the OF and Vavra at 2B replacing Odor, but that's another thread). I don't really see the team that much worse than it was for this year and now we have deeper pitching in the minors.
  21. I too think Lopez will continue to be good, but do you think Bautista will not be as good? We basically just replaced him with a guy who started last year in A-ball. That's kinda how relief pitchers happen sometimes. I also think Bradish could be an impact reliever, potentially closer. The book is not done on Baumann in the pen. What if Denoyer and Armbruester were moved solely to the pen where they can work on the their mid 90s fastballs and perhaps improve the consistency of their slider and change? Heck, our entire bullpen have been DFA'd, released or traded and it's one of the best bullpen's in baseball this year. I don't think you get an impact prospect when you trade Lopez, no matter how good he's been since moving to relief. So if the Orioles end up getting a starter on a winning future team along with a good bullpen arm, that's well worth giving up a guy who we literally replaced with just as good an option.
