  1. Not a good read by 3rd base coach Flores. He has to see that bobble and immediately send.
  2. Runners are not sent home on that play if your RFer even has an average outfield arm. When you one hop the cut off man 3rd base coaches are going to send a lot of runners against you.
  3. Not too much out on him. Couldn't find his signing bonus but I did see where he was listed without a signing bonus when all bonus' over 200K were listed. 6-2, 170 and played at 17 years old in 2019 where he showed good plate discipline. Plays SS so he's probably athletic. About what I would expected for Bleier. Basically a low-end lottery ticket.
  4. I'm sure that was not the debut Zimmermann wanted to have in his major league debut and of course it's hard to judge guys on one start, particularly the 1st major league starts. I've watched Zimmermann the last two season on video in the minors and then in spring training and I would say the biggest difference today was a lack of command of just about everything and a changeup that wasn't getting much drop at all. Zimmermann doesn't have the pure stuff that an akin has, but his command has been typically better. I noticed this spring that Zimmerman was certainly throwing harder (average around 94-95) in his two inning stints, but his command had fallen off, particularly with his slider. Last night was more of the same as he only threw his slider 3 times in the strikezone but did get his only two WHIFs on the pitch. A concern would be that he got no WHIFs at all on his fastball or change, not one. The change last night was not getting a lot of depth and I've seen more in the past. He did not command it very well and obviously left that one up on the home run. He did not have great command of his fastball though he did a decent job of working the edges of the zone, but missed a lot glove side which could have been nerves or over throwing a bit. He gets above average spin on his fastball but did use it well up in the zone enough and again, got no swings and misses which may mean guys pick him up well. I'd still like to see him get more starts down the stretch to see how it looks. Regardless of the results, congrats to a home town kid making it to the majors.
  5. He's had a lot of soft contact that has brought down that avg exit velocity. He's been a little lucky I guess when you look that his actual BA, SLG, wOBA and wOBACON have all being higher than his expected versions. His 76.7 percentile spring speed has helped him out as well sometimes. More importantly though, his 8.8% barrel rate and 41.8% hard hit% are over the MLB averages of 6.4% and 34.8%, and I think that's more important than average exit velocity. His weak % 5.9 (3.4 MLB avg) and Flare/burner% 27.9 (24.3%) are more than MLB avg, so it seems like he hits the ball really hard or flares it, with few inbetween.
  6. Sometimes strong guys like Mountcastle will end up with a dink single vs a pop out because they are able to muscle the ball into a hit. Now is it a repeatable skill? That's a good question.
  7. I can see the Orioles giving him a day off to make sure he doesn't hit it as well. Might as well give him an opportunity to be a rookie of the year next year, unless the Hays situation this year changed Elias' mind on doing that.
  8. Wasn't he RZNJs guy? I can just remember someone always telling me how wrong I was on Hart and then when the guy would get hot for a week or two he would post everyday and act like I was a knucklehead for doubting him. I never liked the workout and a few game cuts I saw of him after he was drafted and then heard awful things about him down in extended by some good evaluators. Once he had the .586 OPS in Delmarva with a the poor K-B ratio, I was pretty sure he was a dud professionally.
  9. I'm going to nitpick here. I saw a few work out tapes of him and I could not believe he was a second round pick. Other than speed, he had no plus tool and I'll always remember watching him pull ground ball to second base during a BP session one after another. I never had major league talent, but let me tell you, my BP sessions in high school were typically line drive to left, left center, center, then left center as I tried to hot where pitches were thrown. he made absolutely no adjustments while cameras were on him and scouts were watching him. If I were scouting him, I would have dropped him because of that. Now obviously i didn't get to see a lot of him so I don't know what else he did well, but he was a guy I never thought highly of and a guy i dropped from our Top 30 prospect list when BA still had him #4 in the organization. Let's just say I was an early adopter of him not being a prospect.
  10. Definitely look like every guy called up in the 80's.
  11. He's gotta be more of a professional than that. I don't know what led to that (probably awful home plate umpire work which seems to be worse than ever this year) but in a 3-2 game in the 6th, you can't get yourself tossed.
  12. I'm honestly not sure if there is a more worse commercial on the Orioles broadcast than the Facebook Small business commercial. Maybe it's the awful depressing cover of the song "I will survive," but when my wife walks in and goes, "that's depressing" that's a bad commercial.
  13. Maybe this Tampa sweep will stop this silly playoff contention talk that some of the Orioles announcers and Hangouters were talking about. just focus on playing the guys that need experience.
  14. One of those runs should be charged to Valaika for that awful tag at 3B. Why are you a foot and half in front of the bag on a throw from LF? that's three potential OF assists Hays has lost to infielders making poor tags.
  15. Tough first inning for him. Not a lot of command of any of offspeed pitches.
  16. Zimmermann sporting the Scott McGregor stache! I like it!
  17. One pitch (92 MPH) and he has an ERA of 0.00!
  18. Interesting that this doubleheader was started by pitchers acquired in the Duquette purge trades.

  20. I'm sorry, did I say anywhere that the Orioles have taken three weeks of data and made a decision? I realize these are small sample sizes but they are pertinent enough to show he's not doing well out there. the Orioles also watched him down in the alternate camp and last year in LF. I do think they will continue to give him an opportunity to improve since he does bring the speed tool that suggests with more experience he can improve. Regardless, with Hays, Stewart, Santander, Mullins (still see him as a 4th outfielder), Diaz and perhaps even McKenna (I'm not really a McKenna guy) needing playing time over three next few years, Mountcastle may need to find his ABs at 1B or DH since he is the worse defensive outfielder of them all. Either way, Mountcastle's bat is going to be in the lineup every day somewhere.
  21. It also appears to be his footspeed when tracking balls. His lack of ft/sec covered is easily the worse in MLB among 2019 outfielders. He must not be able to run at full speed and track balls or he's just not comfortable enough to do so yet. Saying that, he could very well improve especially since there is nowhere to go but up!
  22. This. The thought probably was that Mountcastle is much quicker than Stewart and can presumably cover more ground. Mountcastle though has shown to be very tentative on balls hit to him in the air or on the ground down the line or in the gap and doesn't have the arm strength to make up for it. While Mountcastle has good foot speed when on the way, his statcast reaction -1.1 ft and burst -2.9 ft have shown him to be very tentative in getting after balls. He has ran good routes though giving him a plus +.8 ft advantage. Overall he has a very poor -3.3ft/sec ratings and has been worth -1% catch pct and -1 OAA in his limited time out there. Based off 2019 leaderboards (2020 is not available yet), Only Melky Cabrera -4.2 (28.5 ft covered per sec) is worse than Mountcastle among qualifiers and Mountcastle 27.9 feet covered is by far the worse in the major league with Cabrera being second at 28.5 ft per second. This might be a big reason why he's taking ground balls at 1B again. I was right about Stewart improving from his awful -4.2 avg last year. He's still below average but at -1.7 and his 30.4 feet covered is still better than Mountcastle. Basically by statcast numbers, Mountcastle is the worse or at the very least, among the worse defensive outfielders for covering distance in MLB. It also suggests he has not used the same footspeed when running the bases as he does in the outfield.
  23. This seems like the logical conclusion but don't think Boros or the union would be happy with that.
