    More worried about Grayson.

But agreed, doesn't look good for Wells, which is a shame.

Grayson seems fine. They are just being extra cautious with him.

At this point, let him have the side session, make sure he’s ok and then give him a start in Bowie or Aberdeen.  Bring him back up here that last week of May.

I would guess at this point, Wells may have thrown his last pitch with the Os and even if he pitches again, we won’t see him in Baltimore until sometime in 2026.

I don't think any player than Hays has had more excuses made for him on here.  He had the flu so he was terrible at the plate, continuing to swing at anything/everything...because of the flu, of course.

Theres always something with him, there's always some nagging injury that's holding him back from performing like an all-star, etc.

I've been harsh on him and deservedly so, he's been absolutely terrible since last year.  But Cedric has been awful as well, Cowser is slumping.  So if it means getting Hays some at bats to see if there's anything left in the tank, so be it.

The concept of “there is always something with him” is why you can’t bring him back next year at the salary he will be getting paid.

You have to give up something of quality to get quality. Absolutely Ortiz would be a plus defender at 2B and would be doing well "IF" the Orioles would have given him that chance. I think the Orioles had every intention of Holliday playing 2B for them most of the year and didn't see an everyday spot for Ortiz.

Burnes has been everything the Orioles could have hoped for and they are going for a World Series this year. That trade was certainly worth it at the time and if the Orioles do win a World Series and Burnes is a big part of that, no one is going to care how the players traded do.

I've been a big Ortiz guy over the last few years and wanted him to be the everyday 2B last year over Frazier. He's doing about what I expected offensively and even though he's playing out of position at 3B right now, when he moves back to SS they are going to have an outstanding major league SS to replace Adames.

I hope Joey goes on to have an outstanding career, but the Orioles already have a pretty good SS, and 2B will be manned by either Westburg or Holliday for years to come.

This was a good depth trade by Elias and even if it doesn't end up in a WS win this year, it was the exact kind of trades he needs to be willing to make to give his team a better chance at winning each year.

    What was the alternative?

Block the best prospect in the sport? Keep Ortiz in the minors?  Trade Westburg instead? Move plus defenders at premium positions into the OF and then block the OFers we have?

None of this is good outside of trading Westburg instead of Ortiz if the right deal was there.

You had to make a trade and there is more to do as well. The whole “depth is a good thing” is a false narrative if that depth is wasting away and you don’t use it to address real needs. You just can’t do that.

Of course that is my interpretation of what he said. When I complained about McKenna being on the roster of a WS contender his reply was:

You don't post things like that to further a discussion. You post those type of comments to shut people up.

I’m pointing out how unrealistic you are being. McKenna is a typical 25th/26th man that you see you on all teams.

Finding a better version of him is possible but most better versions will be guys that have larger roles.

No one said anything close to this. It's also a false narrative to say that they we (fans) should just accept it without discussing our opinions on a message board.

You absolutely said it. You said “I don’t think he’s the type of 5th OFer that should be on a WS Contender”

Yet every team has guys like that.  So, your roster expectations are unrealistic and not founded on reality.

So what is the educated narrative?

I think he’s off-balance and pressing a bit.  By off-balance, I mean right now he’s having trouble distinguishing between fastballs and changeups, so he’s trying to gear up for one or the other instead of just reacting to what comes.  And he knows he’s slumping and he’s trying a little too hard instead of letting the game come to him. Especially in important situations.

That he’s slumping and does look as bad then numbers say.

The level of drama people are bringing into the conversation is absurd.

Yeah. But that's kind of been every start for him this year. Very good pitcher, but he's not dominating out there and that's what we traded for. He should be blowing teams like the Jays away with ease.

He sure as hell shouldn’t struggle to get out a guy hitting .097.

So this comes down to what it means to be “lost” at the plate.  If you make good swing decisions but aren’t making good contact on hittable pitches, are you “lost?”   I don’t think everyone would agree on the answer.

Saying he’s lost is an uneducated narrative.

Besides the guy who said he prayed everyday that McKenna is off the team, perhaps you can point us to the "amount of bile directed at McKenna?" I see most people discussing his merits, whether he will be taken or not, or whether he might be better off in the KBO.

Unless you believe saying that you hope he's claimed is "ridiculous amounts of bile" or "vilifying him." This seems to be a JLC-level over reaction and an over simplification of the actual comments made in this thread IMHO.

It has been clear that there is a faction of this board and the Os fan base in general that have an over the top dislike for McKenna.

  10. And btw, Cowser isn’t an everyday guy, at least not yet. The injury to Hays has forced him into the lineup more than he should be.

His defense has largely been very good, so he’s helping there but hopefully with Hays back, he will start hitting some and Cowser can sit a little more often, as he should be doing right now.

Maybe he develops into a 150+ games guy but I think he’s more of a 130-140 games guy right now.

It is also an exaggeration to say that his approach is good right now.

    Except it’s not.

He saw 15 pitches in 4 at bats yesterday. He is seeing 4.24 PPA overall, which is well above the league average.

He went the other way again yesterday, which is something he has been doing a lot. He isn’t trying to be pull happy.

His chase % is very good and overall, his statcast numbers are still very good to excellent outside of K and WHIFF rate.

As was discussed yesterday, his quality of contact has been very good. He is hitting into some bad luck.

Like all players, he will look bad in any given at bat or game. It’s not exactly breaking news that baseball is hard.

Yesterday they faced a pitcher who has been very good for this year outside of 1 bad start. The team had 3 hits and 2 were by one guy.

He guessed fastball on the first pitch and whiffed on a sider to get down 0-1 and set up the entire at bat.

Lots of hitters look bad in an at bat or a game or a week. The incessant crying and whining about it and the over exaggeration over by impatient people who don’t seem to grasp the game or the idea that learning is taking place, is over the top.

In this “we must have it right now” world, the sports fan still stands out as the biggest idiot of them all.

  13. He has been able to get by without his best stuff quite often this year.

He has been very good overall but he has done absolutely nothing to make even remotely second guess the idea of letting him go and not pay him some huge contract.

He has to get back to getting more Ks and missing more bats. I just didn’t think he had a lot yesterday and he knew it.

Easy to forget Cowser only has 2 and a half months of big league experience. He looked lost yesterday but he'll turn it around.

How did he look lost?  He took a bad pitch. Agree.  How else did he look lost?

But what could he have been guessing? Palmer said Romano is only fastball/slider with no changeup.  I’m pretty sure I’ve read the  Orioles have a hitting “strategy “ coach who would go over stuff like that. That was such an egregious fail I’d like to see Cowser sent back tfor a month of summer school in  Norfolk where he would have to write “i will listen to the scouting reports “ on a blackboard 100 times a day.

Pitch before I believe was the fastball that was a high outside strike.

    Thinking something off speed maybe?

But why slow down the bat?  That’s inexperience.

Cedric's offense is really becoming a problem. He really hasn't been good since July of last year. I would like to see him go opposite field once in a while.

Since July 1 (not including tonight), Mullins has 338 PA. His slash line is 200/247/371/618.  70 wRC+.
