Nope.  Nor really any of his peers.  But we know they were being used.

    I'm not saying either way.

It’s hard to say. Many of them, it was obvious if you were around the game then. A friend of mine played with Canseco in the minors. One year, a skinny gangly kid. The next Spring, beast mode. He said it was obvious. I have been told this kind of story many times.

But there was a lot of names that came out, like Palmeiro, that did not look the part. So, who knows.

As a fan, I loved Kirby’s game. Not so much some of the off field stuff later.

Yes, I was tracking that.  The active players who are potential HoFs and are 5’9” or under are Betts, Altuve, and Ramirez.  I mentioned Stroman, Albies, and Mullins because they are all All Stars who are under 5’9” and are currently playing to illustrate there are plenty of successful short guys.

But which ones would have drafted 1-1? The UDFA don’t count. 🤣

Kirby Puckett 5'8".  Dustin Pedroia 5'9.

I double dare anyone to find one report that says best case scenario defensively he's below average at 2B.

Again, Law has him #3 and McDaniel has him #2.  You can disagree but back it up.  I am not campaigning for Termarr at #1. Just read my posts. I prefer Jones, Holliday, or Lee.

For now, it’s my opinion. I’m backing it with that for now. You don’t like it, that’s your choice. Perhaps you find I have no credibility. Ok, you don’t know me, or who I talk with often. That’s fine. I’m nobody.

I’ve read it, but I’ve read and heard a lot. Takes time to find those things. Might have been a few months ago. So what. Changes nothing.

“Busting my chops” about a half grade, is silly. I mean if we’re back to that kind of stuff, I’m done with this topic then. I’m not going to argue. If it makes you feel better, give him an average grade. You win the battle of nothing at all.

For instance, BA says (paraphrasing) he is average now. The hands work well. The arm is average, for a 2B. They say he will likely lose a step at maturity. His range is down some now, the reason cited that he should be a 2B. They say he will generally catch what he can get to. Then, they say it would be “unsurprising” if he loses a step. Sounds like a below average future grade to me, without coming out and saying it. It’s obviously behind a pay wall, but that is what it says.

    Now, enjoy your night.

Jose Ramirez is listed at 5’9” and is a tremendous talent, and has finished in the top 3 MVP voting three times since 2017.   Joe Morgan, Pudge Rodriguez, Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines, and Kirby Puckett are all HoF and were 5’9” or less. Dustin Pedroia and Miguel Tejada were MVPs. Other current guys like Ozzie Albies and Cedric Mullins are All-Stars who are around the same height.  Even Marcus Stroman is only 5’8” (although the height is going to be much more of an issue for a pitching prospect than a second baseman).  Too many to list if you bump it up to under 6’0”.

    https://www.ranker.com/list/best-baseball-players-shorter-than-6-feet-tall-right-now/ranker-baseball

Albie’s, Ramirez, Tejada and Pudge were UFA. Puckett, probably. Betts, of course. Tim Raines, maybe. I think he’s a little taller, but ok. I thought Rickey was taller, I was wrong. The rest of those, nah. Not for me. Hell no on Stroman and Pedroia.

Look, I was looking to get lots of feedback on this. I got it. Now, of the position players listed, how many were maybe 5-08 and 195 lbs? He plays the game laid back, nonchalantly even. The vast majority of guys everyone listed were twitchier energetic guys with more speed and athleticism.

The closest body type, without PED’s (Tejada) is Puckett. A lot of juice and energy there. That is not Termarr.

Maybe I am wrong. In 4-5 years, we’ll know. But I just don’t see it at all. To those with a man crush on the little fella, carry on.

Hate to bust your chops but give me one legit report that thinks below average defensive 2B is a best case and I'll give you 5 that say he should be at least average if not better.

Ok, not hardly, but I really don’t care. There are several out there. I’m not going to spend the time tonight. When I come across them again, I’ll post it for you. Just for you. Better things to do at the moment.

While you’re patiently waiting for my article citation, ponder this one for me. Name me one guy his size that should have ever been picked 1-1 in the modern era? And he’s 5-08, at best.

No problem.   Everyone is enthralled with Collier being only 17.   He's about 4-5 months younger than Termarr Johnson.    There are things that worry me about Johnson.   There are things that worry me about Collier as well.    I think the players I have the least amount of worry about are Jones, Holliday, and Lee.    Lee is probably the safest pick in the whole draft with pretty good upside.

The group you listed (Jones, Holliday and Lee) is kinda where I was, but there is something about Greene. If Elias and his PD and scouting staffs believe they can help Greene reach the impact level he is capable of reaching, they might just take him. shock the world! I saw an interesting interview with Elijah and his pops a while back. There is something about the way he carries himself, a quiet confidence and love for the game. Biggest upside and a tremendous specimen. But just how bad is the swing and miss, and is it in the zone or chase whiffs? Can you imagine the long HR’s he’ll hit over the Great Wall of Baltimore?

He grew up about 30 minutes from me and I’m mad at myself for not getting to see him at West Orange before he went to IMG. I am not going to travel ball tournaments this year. Starting a new job. I’m going to teach in a high school. Old dog, new tricks and all.

Johnson at best could be a below average 2B?  Not a big deal but I've seen projections of average or above average.  How do you come up with below average defense being the best case scenario?

Pretty much every write up I’ve seen echoes that. The biggest thing for me is looking at the body type. I could be wrong, but I’m not alone. It’s about where his body will be at full maturity. He’s likely going to slow down some, gain some bulk. He’s a 45-50 runner now, and he is not a quick twitchy guy.

Projecting body types is not an exact science. Maybe he proves everybody wrong.

The media, Harold Reynolds for one but there was another who made the same type of comment, has compared him to Robbie Alomar and Robinson Cano lately. Good grief! Both of these guys are/were way more athletic, and five or six inches taller. And Cano was jacked up on PED’s for years. This is how ridiculous this kind of thing gets. A scout throws a big grade on him and suddenly he’s the greatest thing since sliced cheese. Madrigal and Hiura were supposed to be 70 grade hitters too. Yawn…wasted first round picks. If Elias takes Johnson, I will lose a lot of respect for him. I don’t care how much money he saves. The chances of him being the best player in this draft, for me, are really really small.

  8. To answer the OP, in this draft, I take Jones if he is at, or hopefully just below slot. The problem is, he may want more than slot. There are rumors out there, supposedly.

A lot of talk about which one, and why. For me, the Orioles are going to pick the guy who will bring the most value, over time. I know, no kidding! 😉 But what goes into that? For me, the guy who is most coachable, and able to reach their tools in games in the years to come. Who projects to have the best impact? Or it could be who brings the most return in trade. They are all excellent talents, accomplished players at the levels they have reached, so far.

The Orioles believe in their player development system. We know this to be true. They believe that if they take a player that can make good adjustments, they can get said player to reach the higher end of their ceiling. They require a little more cerebral coachable player. Being hard-headed or ego maniacal would not lend itself to what they are building, at least I would not think so. For instance, Gunnar does not lack for confidence, not at all. But he is coachable, and as Elias said, he is the “flagship” of their player development system.

So, for me, if they see Jones as their clear best value, they take him. They would have to feel he would excel in their teachings and the environment they provide. If they see him as being over-priced, or have questions about his intangibles, Jackson Holiday and Elijah Greene would be the new flagship candidates for me. They can save a little there, probably. And get premium talent. It takes a lot more than I know about these guys to make that decision. For me, it is probably down to these three.

Lee has grown on me a little. If they really value the hit tool grades above all and want quicker impact, I take him over Johnson. They have a lot more data on him, another son of a coach. The hype about Johnson being the “best HS hitter in 10 years” is such a bunch of noise. That body type scares me. Six years from now, “he could be Wade Boggs”…ehhh, no thanks. Not at 1-1. He could also end up comping to Lenny Harris, a small barrel chested guy with below average defense, speed and arm. At best, he could be Joe Morgan at the plate, with no stolen bases and below average defense. I’m sorry, that’s just not good enough, nor likely enough, for me. I value the defensive side far too much to sell out on the bat.

It must be very tricky for an, ahem, advisor to be, ahem, advising two players both in consideration for the no. 1 pick in the draft.  Player 1 wants to the top pick but is only willing to take $500 kess than slot.   Player 2 wants to be the top pick but is willing to take $1 mm less than slot.  Advising player 2 to give a million dollar discount jeopardizes player 1’s chance of being no. 1.   Seems a bit delicate to me.

Great point. I never really thought about that. I would imagine that both Matt Holliday and Andruw Jones know the games played by agents. I bet they are involved more than the average player parent.

Kumar and GRod were in same HS class as Carter Stewart who went 1:8 in 2018 to Atlanta but didn't sign. Went JuCo for a year and in May 2019 signed with Fukuoka SoftBank (6 yrs/$7M). I think I remember him having a FA opt out after year 5 to avoid posting but can't find that now. Could be an off the wall FA in the 2023 off season.

He’s a good kid, too. I endorse this post!

He had a wrist issue of some kind, IIRC. If he is healthy, I would love to take a shot at him.

  11. The whole “planted front foot” thing. I generally do not see him doing what was described in video. However, if he did, it is not a problem at all. The whole leg kick, or reach step of most hitters, is about loading the back hip and timing. Mostly, it’s a timing thing. Some guys widen their stance and do not step at all. Some toe tap. Some start on a toe and just put it down. Some look to gain ground with a bigger step to gain momentum, personally don’t like this one at all. The list goes on. These things seem to happen mostly when a hitter feels like their timing is off. My son would do this with two strikes against premium velo.

The only thing the front leg absolutely must do is be planted before the swing. Everything goes into a firm planted front side. At least it should, IMHO.

Just my $.02 from the cheap seats.

The Angels are here from the 7th through the 10th. I think once Nevin’s dad leaves town he too will be on his way, either back to Norfolk or on to greener pastures in another organization.

It would be a cool story for Tyler to play for his dad. But as hot tempered as Phil is, I’m not sure Tyler will thrive in that scenario. Coaching his own son may not work for Phil, though I am sure he’d love he chance to do so.

Isn’t Phil Nevin suspended beginning on Monday?   Not sure he’s coming to Baltimore.

He can be in the clubhouse, and on the field in pre-game prep. He just cannot manage the team during the game in the dugout. Maybe he’ll put on a fake nose, glasses and a mustache like Bobby Valentine did.

  14. Personally, I am ready to move Tate. He is not as consistent as he would need to be in the role we want him in. I would have to be blown away to move Lopez now.

Moving Mancini, sounds like a movie title, is an obvious need. To the Mets makes a bit of sense. How much say does Buck have? Not expecting much in return, maybe a pair of young talented DSL/FCL/A- pitchers. We’ll throw in Cadyn Grenier for Buck.

Santander is different for me now. A part of me says the new plate discipline is a mirage, and the fact that he has not been injured yet is a miracle. But then, a part of me says he is starting to barrel the ball again recently and the new coaches have gotten through to him. He was too bulky to begin the year, and seems to have trimmed down some. He is moving better now, and his OF play is improved. I would need a legitimate return now, or wait until December to move him.

Lyles has had great value to this team, on and off the field. That said, I believe he was signed to likely be moved at this time. He is not a must move, though.

Odor might go, and as much as I like him, Mateo could go as well. We have the depth to replace them. Mateo is an extremely talented guy. He does things I have never seen an Orioles SS do on defense. He is fun to watch play defense and run the bases. The bat seems like it can work if he learns to cover the outside corner and lay off the slider. He pulls off and needs a RCF approach. He has gap to gap power to all fields, but has seemed to want to pull the ball mostly. With Westburg, Henderson and Vavra seemingly ready for a shot, it could happen.

The biggest issue is 16M for one year.   If he pitches poorly you overpaid.  If he pitches well, he's gone after 2023.   It's a one year gamble.

All of that is true. Not speaking for SG, but I think some of the attraction is the possible return to prominence, sure. The other part of this is what we would get back from SD for taking on their salary. I would want to see the medicals on him, and I would want to know that Snell is going to come here, be able to learn and be a solid part of this clubhouse. If any of that is not there, pass. I do not know much about the guy since he left TB, but the public numbers are not inspiring. Maybe he just needs a culture change, IDK. It’s a gamble.

I think Harvey and Zimmermann are ultimately the 2 that come into the rotation to “stabilize” it until a Rodriguez/Hall can hop in. As unexciting as that sounds. Probably better than the Voth + Watkins combo. I don’t see Elias doing anything flashy and trading any kind of prospect for a major league upgrade.

I get the idea that Mike Baumann has no idea where his pitches are going despite the decent stuff. I’m glad they have him starting in Norfolk now though. It seemed odd that they didn’t considering his prospect pedigree and the fact that he hasn’t really failed at starting like Akin did. Still, I’d like to see him get on a roll with the Tides before calling him up. He’s been yanked around.

    Not much else down there.

I agree with you. Though, I actually am intrigued by Voth and want to see him get stretched out. His stuff has been pretty good. I want to see if a starter routine is better for his command.

I saw the video highlights.  I wanted to be impressed.  2 doubles were hard grounders a good 3B makes the plays.  The single was off the handle or an infield hit.  The homerun looked nice.

Those make up for the line drives right at fielders, but I hear what you’re saying. Good for him, though.

  18. Good to see his growth and success. Sometimes that kind of thing is contagious for the other guys. I hope he stays there for the remainder of the FCL. At 17, first year stateside and all, no need to push him this year. Especially if they have a legitimate interest in him remaining behind the plate.

  19. 48 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

Snell has good upside, is signed to a reasonable deal for 2 more years and is still young-ish.

He should be a target.  Who knows if we would pay for him though.

I would take back Myers, who is done at the end of the year, if they include a very good prospect and/or take less from us..but again, the Angelos family stands in the way.

I agree that this should be a great time to make a move like this. I have to wonder what money Elias has to make a move like this. I’m not sure on Snell’s work ethic and aptitude, but he is nasty when healthy.
