  1. We'll see. I expect they'll conclude that the most effective defensive alignment doesn't involve playing Mayo at third more than occasionally, even if he proves that he'd be a reasonable option there for most other teams.
  2. I don't know if that's probable. Holliday doesn't have to turn into a better defender than Gunnar for that alignment to make the most sense for the team.
  3. I think it's more likely than Holliday eventually moves to SS, with Gunnar moving to 3b, Westburg at 2b, and Mayo shifting to another position.
  4. His track record prior to 2023 strongly suggests that his results last year are an outlier and that he isn't actually that good.
  5. Cowser started 8 games in CF during his first big league trial. He's a better centerfielder than he looked in that week's worth of games. He'd be at least adequate out there.
  6. He doesn't have to win to get credit for a full year of service time, he just needs to be in the top 2. If the only reason he gets sent down is to game the service time, then he'll be down for a couple of months, at least, to try and avoid that scenario. It makes no sense for Elias to expose the org to another Adley-type situation. Either Holliday makes the team, or we don't see him until June. Even then, if he kills it and another candidate stumbles, there's still risk.
  7. The only people I'm worried about counting on O'Hearn are Elias and Hyde. I'm resigned to the idea that he's going to get at least a month to prove last year wasn't a fluke, but I hope the leash is short.
  8. It's not just spring training, it's early in spring training. Somebody named Errol Robinson is still showing up regularly in these games. I'll be concerned if we get to Earth Day and he still can't get anyone out. Besides, they were 9-1 going into today, so they obviously don't need him anyway.
  9. If Povich can come out of the pen and routinely tie Rafael Devers into knots the way Matusz did to David Ortiz, then I'd take it.
  10. Like I said, if Adley gets hurt. If the need isn't at C, then I can't see Elias bypassing the other options that already exist in front of Basallo anywhere else. I'm not even sure that Elias wouldn't just go with McCann as plan A in the event of a season-ending injury to Adley. It'd be fun to be wrong, but I wouldn't be betting on Basallo to get anything beyond the same cup of coffee Kjerstad got last year.
  11. I'll be very, very surprised if that happens in 2024. Maybe if he's tearing up AAA and Adley gets hurt.
  12. This will be Santander's one shot at a big contract, so I can't imagine he'll be giving out much of a discount. I don't see where it would make sense to commit that kind of money to him when you have other, younger players that you would ideally like to commit significant resources to. That said, I'd say there's a better than even chance that Kjerstad never becomes the player than Santander is now, so I could easily see him being missed in 2025-2026. It's a gamble you probably have to take though.
  13. Oh, I have no doubt that they're going to give him 200 PA before they give up on him, I just think he's a lot more likely to be the guy we saw in Aug/Sep than he is the guy from Jun/Jul. I'd much rather give those at bats to Kjerstad or Cowser, were it my decision.
  14. O'Hearn is probably a lock, but he shouldn't be. I'm not counting on him to repeat last year.
