You said Ortiz was in the range of Basallo. That’s completely laughable.  They aren’t even close.

Bradfield has been in the range of Ortiz, as some have him just inside the top 100 and some don’t. Now, a few places did place Ortiz higher than any spot Bradfield has been but it took a while for Ortiz to be ranked and Bradfield not so much.

Beavers will be there soon enough and since Beavers is much younger, they definitely could value Beavers as much or more than a guy like Ortiz…especially a team that’s far away.

I said nothing of the sort.

You can project all you want, but as of now, neither Bradfield nor Beavers are as valuable as Ortiz was last off-season.  That's not to mention D.L. Hall.

You're not getting a Burnes type pitcher with a deal headlined by either of those guys as of now.

    Huh?

Guys like Bradfield and Beavers aren't as valuable as Ortiz was last year.

Right now we have 3 prospects rated at or better (and they are all better) than Ortiz last year: Mayo, Basallo, and Kjerstad.

Can we afford to deal one of those three for another rental TOR this off-season?

As of today, I wouldn't feel great about that.

Agreed. The question is what Bradfield/Beavers might get us 9-10 months from now, as they progress and other guys graduate. I think Ortiz was actually the second piece in the Burnes deal... But regardless both Hall and Ortiz were both in the bottom half of the top 100, a level below Mayo/Basallo. I'm just not going to hold my breath on a Burnes/Cole type signing. Even with our new owners there is always going to be teams who can outbid us. The guy I'd really covet is Roki Sasaki but appears the Dodgers have the inside track.

I don't think those guys are going to get you anything near TOR.

I don't think we can afford to annually give up a couple top 100 prospects for a rental TOR- at least not yet.

Plenty were willing to part w Cowser last year, but how would we feel about our OF situation this year, and going forward, without Cowser in the mix?

These things were probably said last April too.

They were.  The thing is, they were right.  Until they weren't.

He did have a better approach last April and it's why his results were better.

    Ditto for this year.

The question is how long can he maintain the approach?

The answer is probably not indefinitely.

I would be open to trading a Basallo or Mayo for a TOR guy with multiple years of control. Kjerstad and Norby both have top 100 resumes. Stowers could have some value. Bradfield and Beavers aren't top 100 yet but could be knocking on the door.

Norby, Stowers, Bradfield, and Beavers are not on Ortiz' level.

Basallo, Mayo, and Kjerstad are.  Higher in fact.

However, Ortiz got one year of a top rotation guy with a "throw in" that was likewise a top 100 guy.

It's possible you could get a TOR guy- not on Burnes' level- for a package built around one of those three.  But there's hardly a guarantee and most posters have been adamant about not parting with Basallo or Mayo.

I love Burnes but wouldn't want to pay what it takes. We still have Ortiz/Hall level prospects we can trade for the next Burnes. Remember we get a comp pick when he walks.

    Do we?

The only guys in Ortiz' range are Kjerstad and Basallo.

Are we open to trading them?  For rentals?

Best case scenario sounds like the IL.   Worst case is he’s done for the season.   It’s hard to imagine a 3rd scenario.

Well, the only third scenario is he takes his next turn in the rotation, so easy to imagine, but harder to imagine coming true.

That’s pretty quick for a TJ surgery to fail, if it has.

It would be unusual, but it almost seems like Means' surgery has never "stuck."

He's been able to make a few starts and then experience elbow pain and require rest and rehab.

Let's all hope for the best.  But this is certainly ominous news.

They still have other alternatives to playing Mateo everyday and the performance hasn’t been great at the plate for a lot of this month.

They talk themselves into him as an everyday guy.

Well, I think they like him more than Urias and that's basically it.

If he starts to struggle w the bat, and Urias hits some more, then their playing time will be adjusted.

  10. 1 hour ago, Sports Guy said:

Mateo’s OpS is dropping because he’s playing too much.

The Os really want him to be an everyday guy because they love the tools..but he’s not that.

Face mostly lefties, limit the at bats under 300 and he probably can be a productive bench guy.

Play him everyday and he gets exposed. The Os need to play Urias more, especially vs righties, as he is better vs righties than Mateo is.

I honestly don't think the bolded is the case.

The plan was almost certainly for Holliday to be getting the lion's share of 2b ABs.

And for Mateo to be in a role much as you described.

However, performance- both of Holliday and Mateo- have dictated otherwise.  For now.

    Thanks. I appreciate the support.

I should have put them on ignore when they were pulling their schtick with Moose last week. That was remedied today.

Terrific.  So my board experience will stay the same then and you'll continue to be a non-entity in my world.

The sarcastic laughing emoji on anything you disagree with does get old SG. Just sayin.

I wasn't even taking a shot at SG. I was speaking TO the person I quoted,  and nobody else (imagine that), and saying I agree with you, and don't think that response was appropriate because you're right.

Serves me right for agreeing with someone.  I'll never make that mistake again. I'd hate that to seem passive aggressive to someone I don't even know exists.

I mean, Rutschman had a month where he played like a typical catcher immediately following his injury that caused him to miss ST, and then played like an all star his entire rookie campaign and was 2nd in ROY voting.

Gunnar was on fire during his 2022 call-up, had a slump to open 2023, and then won ROY.

I'd say they both did, or close.  None of their initial lumps were anything close to a being 2 for 34 with a 50% whiff rate.

You're right.  I don't know why this got the response it did.

Gunnar made several impressive plays yesterday, from that bare-handed double play, to his signature 6-3 double play he takes to second base himself. He's done that a handful of times in the past year and half and it must be imposing to the baserunner to see the kid sprinting at you.

Cowser's catch in right was awesome too. He covered a lot of grass to get there and it seemed he never doubted he'd make the play when he jumped to his right to get there. He was also a part of the Cowser to Mateo to McCann play at the plate.

Was a good game to see in person (and then relive through the highlights).

That was actually a very poor play by Cowser.  Firstly, he fumbled the ball in the corner (likely the only reason they even sent the runner) and then he made a very bad throw to Mateo that Mateo bailed him out on by jumping 11 feet in the air to catch.

Best of luck to McKenna, I hope the best part of his career is in front of him.   I’d start a McKenna appreciation thread, but I fear it would just be overtaken by the posters who prefer to focus on the negatives.   The guy spent 9 years in our organization and I’m sure he’s leaving a lot of good friends here.  Best wishes to him.

Did Davis get one?  He must of.

If we survived that, I'm sure we can survive a McKenna appreciation thread.

Some of the advanced stats don’t like Baumann much.

Again, I have felt that he will pop for a season or 2 and have good numbers but I do agree he’s a dime a dozen type guy.

I just think it limits our options on who we can go to.  If Baker was pitching better I would feel a lot better about the decision.

I do agree that I don’t think he gets claimed.

    He's absolutely getting claimed.

Mateo at .733 OPS is an extremely valuable player.   Is he likely to stay at .733?  History says no.

    Oh for sure.

He's not breaking my heart again after last year.

Have pondered the Mateo as an NFL WR or RB as well.. Obviously, we're speaking in hypotheticals that won't happen .. but Lamar + Mateo would be an entertaining combo.

We'll just have to content ourselves with Lamar and Eddie George.

He’d be an amazing wide receiver.

I was thinking running back or safety, but he'd a find a position.

He's not just fast; he's very solidly built.

So did I but I had them both very fast.  Mateo maybe 10.50 - .55, Gunnar 10.60 -.65?   That seems awfully fast and I may be a touch slow on the draw starting the timer or a touch fast stopping it.   That’s why I asked others to time them.

Anyway, those were fun to watch.

I had it at 10.6 for Jorge and 10.7 for Gunnar.

I haven't been able to find it, and so it must be buried in an unrelated thread, but we had a similar conversation last year about a triple Jorge hit.

IIRC, I had timed Jorge at 10.8 on a triple, and people pushed back saying that would be the fastest triple in the statcast era, and 24fps started talking about broadcast television, etc.

But no doubt, they can both really fly.

Jorge coming into to second and turning it up as he decides to go for 3 was a sight to behold.

He's a pretty good baseball player, but I would like to see the alternative world where grew up playing American football.
