I agree individual posters have favorite players.  In regard to Cowser specifically, I think more...experienced posters on here realize that he's young and he needs some time to get out of his slump.  But to your point, people like him and want to see him do well, too.  He's a bit of a fan favorite already.

I'm not sure what your points were on the rebuild but there were discussions about the right way/wrong way to go about doing it, when exactly people felt this team was ready to contend, what prospects to call up and when.  I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone here who thinks Elias has done an overall bad job, but there have always been disagreements on roster decisions, signings, etc that might cross the line into the negative territory.

I do believe I see where you're coming from on unrealistic expectations, sort of.  Expectations are through the roof this year and no one wants to see a team like the San Diego Padres of recent years who, despite being loaded with talent, are not winners.  I think there's still a lot of apprehension about knowing that this team is good after it's been bad for so long.  Almost like a knee jerk reflex.

But you are correct, we should be absolutely thrilled with being here right now.  This is as promising as I can ever remember this team being.

The only people that have seen the organization in a healthier spot are 60 years old or older.  And I can't believe that is the majority of anywhere near it of posters here.

Off the top of my head, it's hard to recall specific details.  But I've seen posts on here about O'Hearn's underlying numbers and how he's not a mirage, for example.

I think individual posters will have favorite players where things like that will happen.  Cowser, for instance, has been getting some of that treatment during his recent struggles.

I was very positive about the state of the rebuild as it was happening.  But that became an increasingly unpopular position as it continued, despite it looking better and better as it progressed.

And I think a lot of it stems from unrealistic expectations.  And that's kind of the thing I don't get.  We're the Baltimore Orioles.  We're on pace to win 100 games for the second consecutive year.  This is as good as it gets.

What in the last 40 years suggest we shouldn't be absolutely thrilled with being in this position?

    Never claimed to be.

Not much sense in a "great post, I agree" response, though.

I think there's a fine line between being negative and criticism/second guessing moves that can be blurry at times.  IMO, negativity is like "This team sucks," "We're dead," "this game is over, we can't win".

Criticism is more along the lines of "Hyde did a terrible job of managing, here's why..." or "Elias shouldn't have made that move, instead he should have done..."

In the middle, the blurry part is like "Mullins sucks, he's hitting .105 for his past 20 games and they need to put Cowser in CF for a bit."  It comes across as harsh/negative cause someone is saying Mullins sucks but it's also stating why he does.

    Agreed.

But "numbers" "evidence" whatever can always be twisted to make whatever argument you want to make, and people mostly want to make negative arguments regarding the O's chances or the performance of the players or management.

When was the last time the team was playing poorly and you saw a thread about how the underlying numbers were actually encouraging?

I guess I get that. But I don't understand the people who treat social media and messageboards like I mumble or yell at the TV. A sharp grounder goes through somebody's legs and I'll say "what the @$(%!". They'll take the time to type out 3-4 sentences about how the fielder is of questionable parentage and the GM is clearly smoking crack, and the mananger who put him there must have brain damage.

I guess rage posting is satisfying for some people.

I always go back to 2014, when the team was in first place every day from July 4th through the end of the season. And there were people who were angry that they weren't deadline sellers because clearly it was all a mirage. Some people have a set point somewhere around five notches below happy.

It's human nature.  Nobody takes the time to fire off messages about what they're happy about.

I'm as guilty of it as anybody.  I virtually never respond to a post that I agree with.  I only respond when I disagree, and the more I disagree, the more likely I am to respond.

    Yes he is.

And it's irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

    Eh.

If you're claiming that the Flaherty acquisition was a bad move because of his career trends, then the fact that he's pitching very well this year kind of belies that argument.

    But fine, leave that be.

I still want to know: If we get bounced quickly out of the playoffs this year, and Elias doesn't make a trade you approve of at the deadline, you don't want to fire him but you want to have discussions.  What is supposed to be discussed?

    NO.

    I did not say that.

Why is it so hard to accurately represent another poster's views?  The comments are right there.

RIGHT THERE I said he should not be replaced.

I was asked point blank, I responded with no obfuscation and yet I'm accused of saying something different.

RSNJ was even satisfied with the response.

He shouldn't be replaced, but we should have discussions about what exactly?

I’m willing to trade anyone but Holliday, Mayo and Basallo..in terms of prospects.

Im also willing to trade some ML pieces.

As for Mayo…yes I think there are at bats there vs lefties all over…enough to justify him being brought up after he gets time in RF and shows he can handle it.

Ok, so maybeeeeee you'd trade Kjerstad???  Because what else is more valuable than Stowers or Norby?

There are no ML pieces to give up now that would make sense.

I find the presumption that Mayo can just pick up RF and play it better than Hays or Santander at the ML level in a few weeks faulty.

There are clearly at bats available for Mayo and let’s not get into this overrating Mateo stuff again.  You should have learned your lesson.

He is doing well in a part time role and they are riding him playing well for the moment but Holliday is the clear better option and will be the obvious starter within 6 weeks.

As for what to trade, I think that’s an awful take but it is what it is.  Some people are ok with hoping for the best and if that doesn’t work out, so be it.

Where are the ABs for Mayo? Verse a lefty you have Hays/Santander/Mountcastle above him as a bat.  He's worse than them defensively.  There's abs for him at DH vs LHP. If you stop using it to rest Rutch. Are you ready to bring him up to do that and only that? Because there's not 200 abs in that role for the rest of the season.

It's not about Mateo vs Holliday.  It's about Holliday didn't look ready to be playing in the MLs.  If 3 weeks in the MiLs can fix that, great.  I'm skeptical.

As to what to trade, instead of just throwing out stupid descriptives, give me names.  Are you willing to trade Basallo?  Mayo? Kjerstad?  Because if not, then Stowers and Norby are about the best you have.

  10. For the record, I hated giving him up, and felt he could have had a long-term role in this organization, and said that many, many times.

That said, this is the game, and this team is highly unlikely to ever really regret it unless something very strange happens with Holliday.

I totally understand the trade from the O's perspective, but a lot of how we feel about this trade long-term is going to be determined by a few starts in October.

Yeah, but the White Sox couldn’t have used him…they have a .701 OPS at SS and .544 at 3B.  Ortiz now sitting at .895.

    He was too old.

Barring a rash of injuries, the Os are going to be in the playoffs.  Seeding matters very little but they will either be the 1 seed or the 4 seed imo.

That said, the reason I mention this is because we have had a lot of discussions about replacing player X or player Y.

The reason to replace this guy or that guy isn’t to improve for the regular season…it’s to improve for the playoffs and give us the best chance to win.

With that in mind, by the time the playoffs get here, these are the players the team will be depending on, again barring injury, unexpected (or continuing) awful performanceor any potential trade:

Offensive players:  Mounty, Holliday, Henderson, Westburg, Cowser, Mullins, Hays, Santander and OHearn.

Pitchers: Burnes, Bradish, Grayson, Means, Kremer, Irvin, Cano, DC, Kimbrel

That is 18 players.  Mateo and McCann will also be on the postseason roster but McCann isn’t likely to see the field, although Mateo will.

That leaves 6 spots.  Some of those spots may be filled by internal candidates for the pen or a guys like Mayo, Kjerstad and Norby.  Basallo could get in this picture but his continued slow start makes that even more unlikely than it was.

End of the day, the goal the rest of this season should be to get the roster to the point where they can win a title.

For me, that means a few things:

    1) Get 1 high leverage reliever and maybe 2.

    2) Get Holliday up within the next 6 weeks.

    3) Get Mayo playing time in RF now, so he can get up here in the second half and be ready to contribute. They could use his right handed bat.

As of now, you don’t trade for an offensive player or a starting pitcher unless there is one there that you can control for several years.

The resources the team has should go the pen and getting the right arm(s) for October. We consistently see teams go against the Orioles with these dominant pens where everyone is throwing 98+ with big time swing and miss stuff.  This is what the Os will be facing in the playoffs, so we need Holliday and Mayo to get up here to face that a lot and we need arms to match those guys in the playoffs.

For me, the playoffs are a foregone conclusion but success in the playoffs is not. This roster isn’t there yet for that but it can be.

Yeah, I had a very similar reaction to the thread about upgrading McCann and Urias as well.  Those roster spots aren't what is going to define this season.

But I'm not sure I agree with your remedies.

    1) I'm not against getting a high leverage reliever, but I'm not willing to give up value beyond Stowers and Norby, so I don't see how high leverage that gets you.

    2) That sounds about right, but we don't know if he can outperform Mateo this year.

    3) The only way there's really significant at-bats for Mayo in lieu of an injury is if he's a better defender than Santader in RF, or they feel comfortable w him in LF, and that seems highly unlikely.
