  1. I miss the combo high OBP and high baseball IQ of players like Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn.  And I miss the crazy baserunning of guys like Rickey Henderson and Pete Rose (two very different players I know).

Maybe these kinds of players are making something of comeback with the likes of Luis Arraez and Mookie Betts.

Just get us out of the high strikeout rate/high home run rate era.

  2. I hated that Bradish got pulled, but I understand it.

I am a bit surprised it's not caused a lot of controversy here since because Hyde usually gets heat on his pitcher management.  But I guess limiting the pitch count of a no-hit bid a starter who began the season hurt isn't really controversial.

  3. Fedde has been good this season.  It's not like he suddenly pitched well only against the O's.

But yes, the Orioles are not hitting very well.  It's not about first pitches, it's about guys swinging at too many pitches out of the zone -- especially Santander but others too.  Still there are some hopeful signs -- like some guys drawing more walks and being a bit more patient overall.  The team just seems to be slumping a bit, maybe especially on the road -- not anything they can't break out of.

I'm more concerned as usual about the bullpen and the health of the starting staff.

    do you read palms too?

i’m kind of laughing how everyone is trying to convince me the Orioles aren’t cheap.

Wait, you started talking about promoting all the young guys.  The young guys are the cheap ones, so getting younger overall goes with the team staying cheap.

I think most here are with you about spending more money on high quality veterans -- in part  because playing mainly prospects doesn't by itself make a team better.  Not all the young guys will become elite performers, and some of those who will aren't yet ready for big leagues.

    Nope

Bring up the young guys. I’d rather see them fail than some of these other guys fail. And I’m an old Orioles fan and I’ve watched the Orioles turn into one of the best teams in the league to a cheap team. Hard to get rid of old attitudes.
Its as if they’re afraid to bring the young bucks  up because then they might have to pay them good money when they start doing well. Some of these guys are 25 years old.

You must have not heard Jackson Holliday was promoted and not noticed Kyle Stowers in the lineup recently.

    1. With the exception of Henderson and Rutschman, the entire team can't hit.

    2. Ailing starters: Means, Rodriguez, Wells, Kremer....

    3. The volatile (and largely ineffective) bullpen.

I think all 3 are reasons for concern.  For me, the bullpen seems like the weakest link.  I am starting to worry a bit about how many starting pitchers have had ailments- I'd put that 2nd.  The hitting totally stinks the past few weeks- but hitting can be very streaky sometimes...  It may turn around at least for some of them....

You don't think Cowser, O'Hearn and Westburg can hit?  Tough crowd.  Even Mateo is having a good year at the plate.

But yeah veterans like Mullins, Santander, McCann and Urias have been really struggling.

Still, I'm most concerned about the bullpen and all the injuries to pitchers.

I was trying to make a bit of a joke based on an argument I had seen the other day, but I never was the best humorist. 😔

For the record, I agree. 🤣

Yeah I knew you were, and I was trying to respond with something of a joke in kind, that perhaps was funnier to me than the masses. 🤨

Since we're in the game thread, I think it's about time we debate in heated fashion who deserves the game ball, no? Should it go to Mateo for his fine game, or to Kimbrel / the ump for the final outs?

Definitely Mateo.  You know the Orioles are going through a tough stretch when a Jorge Mateo three run homer is the key offensive moment.

The last thing we need is another outfielder.  We actually need to trade away outfielders so a Kjerstad can play.  Look what Ortiz is doing for the brewers.  The answer is in front of our faces.

Sooner or later we need to trade away outfielders to get a good outfielder that can both play centerfield everyday and hit.  I've always been among Mullins' biggest champions but everyone's patience is running thin.  Maybe Hays can take over CF against righties, but what have we seen from him lately other than another stint on the IL and some vague sign of offense?

Mullins will and should be given many more chances to get things right, but the latest slump is worrisome for now and the future.

  10. A few of us were arguing in the offseason this team needed an extra outfielder, mainly a centerfielder, in case Mullins or someone else struggled or got hurt again like last season.

Gunnar, Adley and Westburg have settled in nicely, but it appears we can't expect all the young guys to adjust so well.  Cowser was great for awhile but has shown himself to have some large growing pains the past few weeks.  Meanwhile, the veterans in the outfield have all had their struggles.

Aaron Hicks played unexpectedly well last season, and a veteran presence out there in lieu of Mullins slumping badly is maybe what this team needs.  Hopefully that's all this team needs out there this season.

Ouch!  Right down the middle.   What a contrast in at bats.  Westburg rarely has a bad one.  Cowser has some head scratchers.    Sitting on a slider 1-2.   Really?

He has insane skills and potential but he's such a flawed player.  He has to at least hit a ground ball on that 10th inning strike 3 down the middle of the plate.  Worried he's a AAAA+ player until further notice.

  12. I think it was the 1997 team that had Mussina, Erickson, Key...

Could be this staff is the best since the 80s but we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not ready to say it's close to better than the dynasty staffs of the 60s through the early 80s.  Those teams didn't just have good individual years but many years strung together.  That's what the O's haven't had in so long and need to get back to.
