  1. Elias went for it because Rogers had roughly 3.50 ERA for the months of June and July after a rough May.  Elias clearly saw Rogers as a likely near term improvement over Irvin and Povich, but the gamble clearly did not work out.

None of this would hurt quite as much had he not included Norby in the deal.  If it had been Stowers+ we'd be shrugging it off.  Norby's bat would be much better than Jimenez's right now.

Is Yusniel Diaz still in the system?  That should let us stick Kjerstad at DH or 1B.

In all seriousness I like Kjerstad, but I think it's asking too much for him to come close to replacing Santander's production next season when he's hardly played this season.  He needs to come back healthy and work his way into the lineup.

But I also agree we should not offer Santander a long contract.  Something around 3-4 years at most.  They may not offer him anything other than the qualifying offer, but if they don't I hope they have a real plan to replace him.

Heston should be should be the OD RF next year

People were saying that about Heston before this season.  And Stowers too.  Just like they were saying that about Holliday at 2B and Mayo at not sure which position prior to the season.  "Nothing left to prove in the minors" means very little.

Even if Cowser had replaced Santander in RF he wouldn't have really come close to replacing Santander's offense this season -- plus we'd be stuck without an everyday LF.

Kjerstad may be better off replacing O'Hearn in the lineup, though it's hard to imagine the O's not bringing back O'Hearn with his cheap option.

Santander hits HRs. That's it. He has absolutely no other on-field value (unlike guys like Judge and Ohtani), so if he stops hitting so many HRs, his value will completely crater, and for players like him, that tends to happen in the exact timeframe an extension would cover. Could he be an exception that continues hitting 30+ HRs well into his mid-30s? Sure, it's possible, but I would much rather another team take that $20-25 million a year gamble.

So who replaces him?  The only outfielder free agent better than him is Juan Soto.  Good luck signing him.

The O's could go after someone like Tyler O'Neill as a platoon with Kjerstad.  But Kjerstad is probably even worse in the outfield and hasn't had enough opportunities yet to instill confidence.  And the O's may have trouble signing O'Neill away from the Red Sox.  Hard to say.

If they let Santander walk without a serious plan to replace him then there is a big hole in the lineup.

Kimbrel cost $14m. Anyone better than him is going to be "big".

So much depends on Bautista and how he looks.  Either way I like the idea of someone like Aroldis Chapman on a 1-2 year deal as the power lefty.

If they remain concerned about Bautista then that changes things.

Ideally he shouldn't be hitting against most lefties.

Hyde has very few options today.

Yeah I'm guessing he's in the lineup because Mountcastle is banged up.  Otherwise he wouldn't be in there.

This team really needs Holliday to get his swing back and it needs Mayo to come back and start hitting -- even he's only the DH.  I can't imagine Eloy Jimenez staying hot.

If you don't draft and develop pitching then you have to spend on pitching, it's that simple.

Or you have to trade for it.

I'm guessing the argument for not aggressively going after big name FA relief (or big names in a trade) next season are 1) low value relative to cost and 2) relief pitching can be inconsistent.

But the argument for aggressively going after big name relief next season 1) top relievers are true difference makes (see Andrew Miller, Zach Britton, etc),  2) the O's bullpen is pretty easily the weakest part of the team -- perhaps the worst bullpen ever on a contending O's team, 3) and while Bautista and Coulombe should be back and healthy, we don't know how reliable they will be / pitchers especially keep getting hurt.

Felix Bautista and pick up Seranthony's option.

Spend the savings on starting pitching or Santander

We have no idea how reliable Bautista (or Wells) will be next season.  They need to bring in at least one other big relief arm.  It doesn't have to be one of the really pricey ones, but hopefully someone better than a mid 30s Craig Kimbrel.

  9. I'm somewhere in the middle because, as massively banged up as the starting pitching has been, the starting pitching right now, other than Corbin and Rogers, has been decent lately.

The bullpen, however, looked like a problem early on despite any injuries.

Sure, the lineup has suffered from Westburg's absence, and maybe Kjerstad's too, but really at least half the bats are just in a rotten slump right now.

It’s not a slump. A slump is when other teams beat you.

The Os are beating themselves. In every single aspect of the game, they are terrible.

Tonight’s best players were a minor league signing, a AAA call up, and one of our worst trade pickups who had a good outing after the game was decided.

Everyone else should be ashamed of himself

A slump is exactly what it is.

  11. Huge number of injuries + slump do not justify a manager getting fired.  If Hyde were fired now the team would probably play worse the rest of the season.  Hyde has flaws as a manager I agree but the problems with the O's right now are mainly to do with personnel and injuries.

And even if the O's can't break the slump and miss the playoffs I'd be surprised if Hyde got fired in the offseason.  It could happen but I think if changes are made it to leadership with would be some time next season.

Yeah, there is the bright side to this game.  But wrong night for the bullpen to give up 0 runs.

Watch it, everyone will tell you the offense is fine, and that the only reason we are losing is due to the pitching.....

Not "fine" but rather tell you the offense is slumping and struggling with young players still adjusting.  And injured players.

lol I’m not trying to be a jerk but I have 2 young boys. It was easier at first then it is a couple of years in. His career might really go off the rails if that is the issue.

No offense taken and you're not being a jerk.  But he's got new twins!  Still, maybe not the best excuse but maybe a reason nonetheless.

Gerrit Cole gave up no runs in 6 IP tonight as Yankees shutout Cleveland.  Cole is an ace Burns is not that pitcher yet.   It’s not his fault but can’t keep Hyde - team energy /vibe is so bad and this is all mental.

Cole got pretty roughed up in June and July in a few starts.  Burnes had been nails until only recently.

I'm hopeful Burnes is still just adjusting to being a dad.

Def need 2 plus arms. Burnes got us this far even though he’s turned into a pumpkin

He hasn't turned into a pumpkin.  Just a subpar month.  The O's have a good chance to rebound strong next month.

  17. For those of us who had been kind of skeptical about Cowser this game is a good example why.  At least move him down in the lineup as soon as possible.

I'm still a pretty big believer in Burnes.  He'll bounce back though maybe not right away.  If he doesn't come back next year the O's need to find a very good pitcher or two to replace him, or next season could be even more frustrating.

  18. We're in the trough of an unfortunate August slump.

Holliday, Mounty and Santander are in mini slumps.  Eloy appears like he just went into one too -- though that's not unexpected.  Holliday is still figuring things out.

Adley I think has been in a bigger slump though sometimes feels like he's about to come out of it.

Cowser hits but just strikes out way too much.

Gunnar, Urias and even Mullins have been the best hitters recently -- as have platoon guys like McCann and Slater.

The lineup needs a shakeup perhaps.  I'd like to see Mullins back in leadoff for awhile for starters.

That's the only time the O's hit them.  Maybe they don't know.

I tend to think there's too much aggressiveness with this lineup and not enough selectivity.  But I'm not a hitting expert.

My bad..Sorry...thought we had only 1 out...still Mullins is the king of foul pop ups...

Yeah never like like to see guys popping out on a 3-0 pitch, though Mullins has swung the bat pretty well of late.

Its uncanny...thts all I can say..I dont need to see stats that show me they are good with Sac Flys...this team is NOT good..

No such thing as a sac fly with 2 outs.
