somebody wake up Orioles...first pitch hitting Mateo strikes again...

I don't think that's really the issue.  The issue is Cowser and others swinging at too many balls and not drawing enough walks, the past several games especially.  It's mildly worrying other teams will figure Cowser out soon.

  2. It's mostly a young team.  Not surprised a wily veteran like Stripling was able to frustrate the offense.  And not surprised the young guys are making some mistakes on defense.  They will improve.

But our bullpen has issues.  It's not as good as last year's, and I'm not convinced yet Elias has a real plan for getting some better pitching, either short term or long term.  Maybe the best we can do for now is wait and see what we'll get from Bradish, Means and Wells.  And go from there.

I'll give you Baumann in your point. But Ramirez has hit a batter in every one of his outings and the amouny of wild pitches are intolerable.

I see no reason to worry about the departures of Ramirez or Heasley. Even Nick Vespi is capable of better.

Yeah agreed, but it's not like our bullpen in general is full of shutdown guys.  Look at Kimbrel tonight -- worse than anything we've seen from Ramirez or anyone in the bullpen.  Not saying Ramirez should not be the next guy to go, but I just feel like in this bullpen you're going to get some off nights from more than one guy here and there.

just cant keep going to the well and expect success every single night...Kimbrel is overworked and it shows...we better get more options in the pen...this is a loss and its all on Kimbrel and the crappy offense against a mediocre starter....

The O's offense isn't going to show up every night.  This game is on Kimbrel.

  5. Even if Baumann, Ramirez and a couple of the others are mediocre or below-average, it doesn't mean they are that easily replaced at this point in the season.  What if Bradish and Wells still aren't healthy enough or get hurt again?  Or what if Means and Perez pitch worse than Ramirez?  All of this may seem extreme but it's definitely possible.

This is why it's difficult to part ways with the likes of Baumann or Ramirez.  If they leave there is no backfill that is easily filled, at least not until the team is ready to tryout Povich or McDermott as relievers.

I'd let Stowers bat against LHP tbh.

But for me it's more about throwing the guy a bone.  Yeah, he might only be up a week, and get 4 at-bats, but he's on the 40, and he's not the kind of prospect I'm worried about interrupting his development etc.

Stowers' AAA numbers this season are good but not excellent the way the others' are.  He only has a .307 OBP so far in AAA.  And he would just take away at bats from Kjerstad, who has had great numbers this year.  Hard to imagine him being called up anytime soon and may be a trade candidate instead.

I expect we’ll prefer right handed relievers vs left given we have more depth with the latter.

Nice work.  It's looking like a good possibility the Astros will be deadline sellers -- or maybe buyers/sellers.  Not sure who would be available, but they have a decent arm or two not named Josh Hader.

I know you have him in your long shots section but I can't see how Cleveland would trade Clase unless they went into freefall, which I suppose is possible considering all the injuries they are dealing with.  They have the best record in baseball so it seems unlikely.

A nice move. But it was easy to see a million ways this bullpen was regression-prone and lacking strikeout stuff at the back end.

Especially when you factor in the DL Hall trade too.  Suarez and Wells get bumped to the pen only if Bradish and Means are effective starters a decent part of the season.  Would the O's promote Povich or McDermott to pitch relief?  My guess is not anytime soon, but I dunno.

A trade would for one or two arms would be best, but trading for good relief pitching is only harder now because so many teams can make the playoffs.

I like O'Hearn more than Santander as a hitter going forward.

But O'Hearn's numbers are inflated because he never bats against lefties, plus he's trash in the outfield.

If Santander's hitting does not improve this season of course you don't give him a QO, but that's unlikely.  He'll probably pick it up as the weather heats up.  Plus Tony plays at least a decent RF and can play first base too.

Like others have said, should the O's offer Santander a QO?  Maybe -- it depends on how he performs and how Kjerstad and Stowers perform.

  10. Nice show from Kremer today.  Hopefully he'll become more efficient and go deeper into games, but the O's really needed that performance after Grayson's meltdown yesterday.

Well as I said last year, Gunnar is a star.  Was at the game today and he is heads and tails above anyone playing today other than Trout....and we all know how good he is.

Just another level of player.  I bet without him we are right around .500 or a little above.

    He is that good.

Great players but far from the only ones playing at that level.  Juan Soto, Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Jose Altuve, Bobby Witt Jr, Elly De La Cruz, CJ Abrams and some others are playing at a similar elite level.

I believe you. Take away Felix and 3 very good months of Cano. Now what do you think they’d rank.

You could say "take away the best and second best guy" about any bullpen.  Coulombe was good last season and Cionel and Webb weren't bad.  The guy we miss is DL Hall, though I'm sure the hope is that Wells, Suarez and/or Irvin will fill some of these holes.
