I think you would admit that if the O's are paying Kim 7M in 2024 that is 7M that they won't be spending elsewhere.

Let's say Kim puts up four 2 win seasons. Total investment is going to be about 37M for those four years. So he's basically costing you a bit over the going rate. Now the O's are not worried about wins next season, so the two wins he's worth in 2021 isn't something the O's should be paying 8M for. Assuming the O's value wins in 2022-2024 he still would be a poor signing, for the O's, at free agent prices.

Snell's 28. That's a solid enough guideline when it comes to extending guys but it doesn't work as well when talking about trading assets at peak value.

You also need to find trading partners who are willing to give up prospects to acquire your getting expensive assets. You can't be a seller without a buyer. Of course a big part of that is developing players that have a high enough perceived value.
